With the Pros Wednesday Dye Ink Sprays Rock!

Alisa Bangerter

I love using dye ink sprays. In fact, I totally think they rock! I find myself reaching for and using my dye ink sprays over and over again. You can create some really cool effects and the possibilities are endless. Some sprays are rich, vivid and bold, and some shimmer and shine.

Some of my favorite ways to use the sprays include:

  • Color washing patterned paper, fabrics or trim to create a new look.
  • Color washing over wax or embossed images creating a resist.
  • Spraying two or more colors close together or on top of each other to create cool blending.
  • Spraying over mask or stencils to create cool images.
  • Letting the ink drip onto cardstock to create cool splotches of color.
  • Diluting sprays with water to create soft and light washes.
  • Using dye ink sprays to make a project look antiqued, vintage or old and worn.
  • Adding shimmer or sparkle to silk flowers.
  • Spraying my stamp directly to create a watercolor effect.

Here’s one of my recent projects using dye ink sprays. It’s featured in the “Techniques from the Pros” section of the new Stamp It! Cards.

Designer Tips

  • When spraying the cardstock with shimmer spray, it is fine to have some large droplets. This will actually add to the interest of your design.
  • After stamping and applying shimmer spray, your cardstock may begin to fold. Iron the cardstock with a dry iron to flatten it before adhering it to the card.

So my challenge to you is to pull out your dye ink sprays and try something new. If you have never tried dye ink sprays, you are in for a real treat and will love the creative possibilities they offer!

Just after I bought the Stamp It! mag, I had the opportunity to try these in a class as well—we sprayed tissue paper with them and then used Xyron to mount that on cardstock for backgrounds. Can’t wait to get some to play with at home!
