Freebie Friday Matt, Mom and a Blooming Giveaway!

P. Kelly Smith

Welcome to Freebie Friday! First of all, I want to give a big shout out to those who responded to Matt’s Lone Design Man post yesterday. I know he was truly surprised and humbled by all of your comments. Who knew this “average, every day, run-of-the-mill kind of guy” would be such a big hit!

And ladies, he will be writing more blog posts in the future. With comments like the following, how can I keep Matt hidden away?

  • It’s really refreshing when you meet a guy in the paper crafting world!
  • I love the amazing graphics in the magazine and often stare at them for inspiration and composition just as much as the projects themselves.
  • Thank you so much for being such a real kind of guy with a great perspective on co-workers and life.

If you haven’t left a comment on Matt’s post, you have until midnight tonight to be entered to win a collection of magazines featuring his amazing openers. (After midnight, you can still leave a comment telling Matt how great he is, but unfortunately, you won’t be eligible to win.)

You know who else is great? Dear ol’ Mom. My own mother likes to tell people she’s my older sister. And since we’re only 20 years apart, she usually gets away with it! Maybe I should pay more attention to the moisturizer talk that goes on here at the office!

My cute “sister” and I at my cousin’s wedding in 2005.

And since Mother’s Day is on Sunday, I thought I would spotlight two fabulous projects from our May/June 2009 issue. Who knows? Maybe a few of you need some last minute design inspiration!

Here's Beatriz Jennings' Tulip Card and A Mother's Love Card

I just love Beatriz’ soft and shabby style! And I love how she incorporated a flower into the design of her butterfly card. So clever! Speaking of flowers… have you ordered some for your Mom yet? If not, never fear… I’m giving them away! Technically they’re not real flowers, but they can definitely be used on Mother’s Day cards, gifts, etc. And the best part… they won’t wilt!

My mom set an example by the way she lived her life! She was a loving, generous Christian woman who was not only an example to her immediate family, but also to the community and a large extended family. And we didn’t know a lot of what she did until after she was gone. Then people shared with us the wonderful things she did that impacted their lives. So even though she is not longer physically with us, her spirit and legacy are still guiding us to made good choices in our lives.

The best advice my grams ever gave me was to take the career path I wanted and to not worry about the people who were trying to knock it.

My mom always repeats the advice to say the truth no matter how hard it is. Telling a lie may let you get away with something for a short while but not in the long run and one lie leads to many.

Thank you for an oppurtunity to win your beautiful giveaway.

  5. Jane says:

I don’t even know where to begin. One that stands out because not only does she preach it she shows it through her actions every day……..and that is to be kind. I think a lot of people forget to show kindness to strangers these days.
Thanks for the chance at this amazing giveaway!

Mom was full of advice, much of it passed from her mom (my wonderful Grandma). The ones that stick with me every day are: Do unto others as you would have them do until you. Always do your best. Wish more folks these days had had such advice from their moms and would put it into practice.

  7. Debbie V says:

My mom always taught me to live FOR others, not for MYSELF. She said I’d be happier that way; and you know, she was absolutely right!

  8. Wendy H. Beck says:

My mom taught me the joys of crafting.

  9. EGJKaufman says:

First I would like to say Happy Mothers Day to All the mommies out there!
Today I am being a mother to my 6 year old sick with a flu! My husband had some great plans for today and I was very excited but no all plans had to be cancelled! need to be the mom first and take care of my child! and that was the best advice my mother ever gave me!
take care of yourself and your children!

  10. Jo R. says:

My Mum’s best advice was “Be yourself, because those that matter don’t mind, and those that mind, don’t matter”. Works for me!

  11. Your mom is adorable! My mom always taught me to put family first- that it was the one thing I would always have no matter where I went in life.

  12. rebecca keppel says:

It is not exactly advice, but I find myself saying to my kids, “Don’t be sorry, just don’t do it” because my Mom said it to me! LOL!!

  13. Monika/buzsy says:

It’s still sunday here Happy Mother’s Day ladies! My Mom’s best advise is to ‘let it go!’. Some things we can’t change… we just have to go with them…

  14. Christine Flack says:

“Play nice.” Two simple words that can have such a huge impact on your life. What a great time we can have when we all play nice. :0) Thanks mom!

  15. ava says:

I’m not sure what the best advice was my mom gave. My mom did a great job at modelling what a family unit should be like. No swearing, no dis-respect and work hard. All 4 of her children have all done well in life and have great familes.

    Nice cards!!!

  16. Lauren R says:

So every girl has had their heart broken and my mother has always been there for me with the best advice and a shoulder to cry on. I think the best advice she has given me is: Don’t dwell on what could have been, make plans on what can be…It’s so true! After my last fall from relationship grace my mom was there to support my plans to move on. So I kept busy and had absolutely no time to think about the past. Years later I’m happy and making the most of my life.

  17. Kara says:

“Father knows best.” My mom taught me that God knows what’s best for us. Thanks mom!

  18. Tammy Franz says:

The best advice my mom ever gave me was the quote, ” In the light of eternity, will this really matter”. I often find myself saying this when faced with stressful situations. It works! More often than not the answer to that question is NO. I can then just let those situations go and not stress about them anymore. Thanks Mom!

  19. melita says:

it’s not quite midnight here (PST) yet so I hope I make the deadline! The best advice I’ve ever received from someone I respected as a mother was to make sure I always took time to appreciate the little things in life.
