felt.

We all grew up with felt; it’s one of those fond crafting memories of childhood. It’s fuzzy, warm and comes in a rainbow of colors. You most likely have a stack of it somewhere in your own craft room.

It’s time to FIND it! Felt is an inexpensive and creative way to add a little ‘something’ to you next project. Here’s my latest card:

I used my Cuttlebug to cut the felt. I had to shim it with a piece of cardstock to get a nice clean cut, so be prepared to experiment a bit. I also used this adorable new paper from Cosmo Cricket and one of the cool new Colorbox inks from Clearsnap, SURF.

 Besides die-cutting, try:

  • Layering felt accents for even greater dimension
  • Sewing it by hand or with your machine
  • Letting a piece of felt peek through die-cut silhouettes
  • Embellishing it with buttons, brads, eyelets or ribbon
  • Painting, writing or stamping on it (experiment with this)

You may have a stack of felt, but I have BAGS of it! I’d love to send a few of you a sampling of my colors:

I’ve cut a few pieces of felt in my CB, I need more flower dies or have you ever tried a swirl/flourish? I don’t have any of those dies either but I bet they’d be gorgeous!

    Oh…what a great idea!
I love felt too, but didn’t know I could use my Cuttlebug to cut it.
Thought I would need a deeper blade than that.
    Your card is super!
Thanks for a chance to win!

  8. Christina says:

your felt flowers came out beautifully!

  9. Michelle H says:

Never to leave a question unanswered, I tried the most flourishy die-cut I had and it cut beautifully. I just posted it and another technique I just tried on my blog. Sue

  13. Erica says:

  14. Tanis says:

I don’t have ANY felt. Except some bright Walmart colours!

I need some more, but I’m not sure where to get it. ALMOST placed an order the other day until he told me he wanted 27 dollars to ship 20 9×12 sheets cause I’m in Canada.
    Uh huh!!

Does anyone know of a good place to buy felt?? I’m really at a loss. I want all the pretty colours!!!

  15. Jen says:

I love the look of felt and struggle for ideas as to how to incorporate it into my designs. Thanks for the great ideas – I can’t wait to try some of them!

  16. ROSEMARY D. says:

I love the felt flower but I don’t have a cuttle bug..I have to cut it by hand
..I have an idea to iron freezer paper to the back of the felt to make it easier to cut but the layers that you have , I am not sure mine will look like that..I love your magazine too

  17. cjs says:

What a great card! Have to do more experimenting with my Cuttlebug – I love it!

  18. Maureen W. says:

Hi Susan! I love felt too and am slowly building up my collection! I wanted to share with you a felt project I made recently: http://mycasestudies.blogspot.com/2009/05/pop-tart-card-and-more.html

    Hope you like it!

  21. Carol N. says:

This is a great card. I will have to think about using felt more often in the things I do. Thanks for the idea.

  22. CB says:

I love the looks of this rainbow of felt! I have an old-style Sizzix, but I’ve never cut felt w/ it…I know I can, but I’ve just ended up buying felt pieces that match the same line, isn’t that crazy? It’d be so much more economical to cut my own pieces!
Thanks for the chance to receive one of your felt packages!

  23. Tonya in MI says:

Does it count if I used felt last week to make a “nut hat” for my DD for her school play? :-) It should totally count.

  24. Pamela Gibson says:

    what fabulous felt colours!

  25. Shannon says:

I too need to get back to working with felt. I get in ‘ruts’ of one style of project at a time. Of course, even with that, I still end up with multiple projects at once that don’t seem to proceed to the ‘finished’ status. Urgh!
Thanks for the reminder, though! Great post

  26. Angela says:

I love your cuttlebug flower die for the felt. Which one is that? I’ve done felt hearts with my cuttlebug and I used the stickyback felt so that it was more like a felt sticker.

  27. Bernice says:

Those felt hearts are adorable! If you didn’t say otherwise, I would have thought you bought them. Fantastic idea ;)

  28. Cheryl says:

I have never tried to cut felt with a die cutting machine. Thanks for the inspiration!

  29. Erika M says:

I really love felt as well. There are so many cool things you can do with. I must confess however that I haven’t tried it in the die cut machine yet.

  30. Regan says:

    oooh, I love felt…super cute

  31. Kelly Marie says:

Felt!!! It looks so fun. I am so excited to hear that the cuttlebug can cut it! I can’t wait to try that!

  32. Melisa Hunter says:

Lots of fun! What an assortment of colours! Thanks for the chance to win!

  33. Sue Neal says:

Ok, trying to answer some of your questions here. First off, HELLO to all you fellow Canadians who have read my blog today (yes, ‘colour’ gives you away!). I’m still looking for a good source for felt for you, so please stay tuned to my blog for an answer to that. The die that I used for the flowers is Provo Craft #37-1508 die 2×6 flowers. It’s a great die, as it has 8 flowers total with it. No, it’s not crazy that you’ve bought pre-made felt embellishments! I have them too! And lastly, unless you’re taking a picture of that nut hat and scrapbooking it, no it doesn’t count! Just kidding, in my world, it ALL counts!

  34. Marla says:

I made the stroller embellishments on my son’s birth announcements with felt. I wish I’d had your idea about using cardstock to make it easier to cut back then!

  35. Sue Neal says:

Sorry, I forgot the most important thing: You have GOT to go look at the cutest felt pop-tarts I’ve ever seen (well, frankly, I’ve NEVER seen a felt pop-tart before :) ). SO CUTE!

Cute Cute Cute! Love the nested flowers, I should give that a try. I came across some felt scraps stuffed in a baggie the other day when I was reorganizing – and I thought oh, I should do something with these …. I stuffed them back in the box! ;)

Might fish them back out now though – thanks for the inspiration!
