Happy Paper Crafts Anniversary to Me!

Happy Paper Crafts Anniversary to Me!

Susan R. Opel

One year ago today, I began working as associate creative editor for Paper Crafts magazine!

It’s amazing to think about what all has happened in those 365 days including two title changes from associate creative editor to associate editor to editor.

Take a look back at my first year in pictures!

In the top left picture you can see me on June 9, 2008, eager to get started. One change is that I’ve lost over 40 lbs. since my first day. You can also see me at work filming a crafting video in my home and showing my Paper Crafts colors.

I work with some pretty cool people, and there’ve been changes there, too. Since I arrived we lost Stacy, Kimberly, and Neko, but our team is whole again with the addition of Jennifer and Matt (and boy, do they ROCK!). Jennifer, Brandy, Kelly, Cath, and I bonded in Anaheim at CHA in January, and in September, I got to meet the Pros and the Editorial Board for the first time.

Happy Paper Crafts Anniversary to Me!

I’ve become an expert air traveler with trips to Chicago and Anaheim for CHA trade shows, Louisville, KY, and Manchester, NH, for CKCs, and Salem, OR, for World Card Making Day 2008. I’ll be off to two more CKCs before the year is out in Valley Forge, PA, and Nashville, TN.

Happy Paper Crafts Anniversary to Me!

Since starting at Paper Crafts, I’ve started making cards, and being in a creative environment for work is pretty darn cool! And the creativity doesn’t stop there… My sister and I masterminded a makeover of the lobby of our building (top left of collage), I got to see my name in print in the Nov/Dec 2008 issue, my sister and I arranged our scrapbook room in glorious color, I decorated my very first cubicle tree, and I created a ton of cards to share with my students in the CKC card swap.

And as you well know, we know how to have fun. My parents came to visit in October (aren’t they cute?), and they kept remarking how it seemed like all we do around here is have fun! Like that’s a BAD thing. I guess I am OK with going to a Celine Dion concert with my colleagues and dressing up like crazy hippies for Halloween. Fun is GOOD!

Ah, the memories… I’m sure to have many more good times in the year to come, but this was my first one! And I LOVED it!

Tell me how your life has changed in the last 365 days, and I’ll give one lucky winner a copy of the fantastic July/August 2009 Eco Issue. I’ll also include four cards that appear in the issue courtesy of Kim Hughes (2 from her!), Brigid Gonzalez, and Danielle Calhoun. Get those responses in by midnight MDT on Friday, June 12, and Kelly will announce the winner on Monday!

Here’s to many more years at Paper Crafts magazine!

Wow, in the past year I have recovered from Post Natal Depression, lost 12.5kg (27.5lb), watched my son start school and my daughter start to walk and talk, and I’ve learned to live life for now!

  2. Summer Braxton says:

Congrats on your anniversary and the weight loss…. I found the 40 you lost this past year. My husband was deployed from April 08 to April 09, so I moved in with my parents (yikes) and was basically a single mom. When he returned, my new world was again turned upsidedown and we moved to northern VA. A huge change for this FL girl. Everything is different here… a little scraey, but exciting. I’m up for the challenge.

  3. Shawn Wenrich says:

I started with a new company in September 2008, I’ve probably lost about 15 lbs over the last year, I’ve learned that life is so very precious after almost losing my sister to a sudden illness. Luv this post!

  4. Christine says:

My life changed in Janurary this year when my sister introduced me to blogging. Then I found all these crafty blogs and now I need to craft every day!!!

  5. Deanne says:

    Happy Anniversary

My life has gone through so many changes this year. I’m now a single mom, got my driver’s licence, my little boy started walking, I discovered I have hyper-thyroidism, etc..

  6. Gracie says:

Happy Anniversary to you. My life has changed in the past year because of Scrapbooking. It paved a way for me to meet new friends and rekindle friendships with old ones. It also helped me in starting my own business. I am a work at home mom now and it’s been good. I sell hand-made crafts and it helps us financially in some ways.

  7. CB says:

Happy Anniversary, Susan! Sounds like it’s been a great year for you.

What really opened all our eyes this past year was Hurricane Ike. I live in Houston, and thankfully, we survived without major catastrophe. But, we did have a 30 foot tree in our backyard that completely uprooted by the high winds. Amazingly, no one was hurt; if the tree had fallen the OTHER way, it would’ve fallen directly on top of our house. There are too many “what ifs” to name…we are SO lucky to NOT have major changes in our lives because of that storm, unlike many other neighbors in Houston and Galveston, who lost their homes and livelihoods.

So I guess I would say that our lives have changed this past year in the way we look at our lives…I know I’m so much more aware, so much more grateful for our kind neighbors and community…so appreciative of the amazing blessings that our family is lucky to have! :)

  8. Lee Anne says:

Really? You’ve only been here a year? Wow! That shocks me! You are awesome at what you do!

My year is a blur. I teach, so it whished by faster than ever. In addition, my 3-year old turned 4. He’s my world!

  9. In the last 365 days I have fully retired, graduated my last daughter from college, helped same daughter move to New York to start her job, and spent 2 glorious weeks touring Italy with my 2 daughters.

  10. Elena says:

  11. Lynn M says:

Well, I was going to post and bear my soul, but have decided just to say that over the past year, I am slowly learining to live one day at a time, sometimes its just a moment, but those moments pass. I have learned a lot this past year, and I have grown a lot. I hope to continue to do both.

  12. Laurel says:

Congrats to you on one year! I have had a fabulous year. I started working full time as a teacher (have been part time for many years) – still not convinced full time is the way to go…LOL. I have had some cards published, and I am on some design teams. So it has been an exciting year for me!

  13. Bernice says:

356 days AND 40 pounds? You must be one hardworking girl! In the past year, I graduated from university, got married, moved into my (our) new home and just started a brand new (wonderful) hobby – cardmaking!

  14. I just wanted to say Happy Anniversary to you & way to go on loosing 40 pounds girlie!

  15. Becky P. says:

Congrats on the weight loss and the work anniversary. This has been a pretty rough 365, but my familiy is healthy, and I am still employed. I am trying to be optimistic, and I hope things will change for the better this summer. Thanks for the chance to win.

  16. First of all, Congratulations on you work anniversary! Whoo hoo!!! How cool! Also, congrats on the weight loss…I have to work on that one:)

Last year I stopped working in banking….after 25 years in the business…I thought it was temporary, but have found that replacing it with bookkeeping for a LSS AND teaching classes there has been an awesome experience. I found that I LOVE teaching people paper crafting…with a twist…being “coined” as the Frugal Scrapper (before it was even popular), I have found I all of a sudden have a HUGE following (with the state of the economy)…it doesn’t mean I don’t buy product/tools/supplies…I just buy them on a cost per use basis…the more I can use them, the less the cost in the long run…I’ve taught “unconventional” ways to use products/tools/supplies so that paper crafting is a “green” form of crafting!

  17. ladona says:

  20. Michelle H says:

I’ve thought about it and my life really hasn’t changed in the last 365 days. Everything is the same as it was at this time last year. Since things are going fine, I guess that is a good thing :) It’ll probably change now! LOL

  25. Hanne says:

I have been injured last year, which has influenced my priorities, my way of living and my self-esteem.

    Congrats on the anniversary!

  26. Congrats on you 1 year anniversary! WHO HOOOOOO!

The past year has been a learning experience for me. My husband is in the Air Force and we moved from Tacoma, WA to Katterbach, Germany…just 3 months after he returned from a deployment. We moved with 2 cats who flew in the cabin with us and had to be toted around airport terminals, a 16 month old daughter and a 3 month old daughter and no car when we arrived here! We lived in lodging for 5 weeks until we found a house and had to wait another month on top of that for all of our belongings and car to get here. We stopped in NY to visit my family on the way and I am so happy we did as my dear grandma passed away suddenly just a few days before Christmas. I was unable to fly back for the funeral and I regret not being their for my family. Now we are gearing up for another deployment and trying to do some sightseeing before that happens. I also just got my craft room in order! I have had a busy, rewarding and at times sad year but I am so very thankful for my daughters and the rest of my family.

  27. Girrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!!!!!!

Don’t enter me in the drawing….. just wanted to shout out….

    Happy Happy Birthday Susan dear!!!!!

    Hope it was fabulous!

    Hugs! ♥

  29. Kay says:

Since starting my blog in January I’ve meet many new online friends. I’m inspired each and every day by their creativity and some of them I feel like I’ve known for years!

  30. StampinCathy says:

    Happy Anniversary to YOU!
Wow your card are so cute and what a fabulous place to work at!!
I would have to say the past year has been so many changes in our lives. I loss my job and then we picked up roots from our home town in Missouri and moved to Tennessee again. My oldest daughter graduated from Creative Circle in Atlanta, GA and took off to Chicago, IL. Of course we were hoping she would move in with us…NO…she needs the big city and hopes to have a better chance at finding a design job there. Thanks so much for a chance.

  31. Tanya Sh. says:

in the last 365 days my son has grown up! He is 1year old now!!!!

  32. Karen says:

I retired this year after 37 years of teaching. It’s been even more wonderful than I imagined. I volunteer in a friend’s classroom once a week so I get a chance to work with kids, and the rest of the time I can create, read, and help out in various places. It’s been a great year!

  33. Yay! Big congrats on your first year Susan!

  34. I became disabled after a neck surgery had gone wrong. I became blessed with my second granddaughter last Nov. I’ve overcome many challenges this past year with my health. I come from small framed women and since my surgery I’ve gained 80lbs. I’m going to get a perm pain pump in the next month or so and I’m hoping that I can excrise once again.
    Congrats on your weight lose.

  35. SMK says:

In the last 365 (which I’m going to extend out to the last 395) days… I walked for my college graduation (still finishing my thesis) for both my BS and MS in 5 years, half my friends got married, I got married, became an Army wife, the other half of my friends got pregnant, and I became a stay at home wife :)

  36. Ev says:

Wow, what a great year you’ve had. The creative life seems to do you well, and so does getting a slimmer new you! Congrats!!

After working for 38 years, I retired and am enjoying more of my family & crafting. I do miss my “work family” a lot.

However, there a whole other world out there. And now, I have more time to enjoy it all: Life is sweet, with meeting new friends, bonding more with family, and creating at my leisure.

    Saw my granddaughter graduate from high school & a grandson from pre-school ~ which might not have happened had I been working. Ahhhhh….. :•}

  37. ivy says:

my company was bought out, transferred to working for the new company. didn’t like it that much working for them so i cut from 32 to 16 hrs. now i get to spend more time with my boys and more time to craft too!

  38. tape says:

I graduated one year ago today. Started a new job in January, went to my first scrapbooking convention and met lots of new people.

  39. Emily Lurker says:

I have moved, changed schools, went on my first blind date, got a year older. As I write this it does seem alot but it was some busy times in my life.

  40. Jenny says:

    Congrats on a great year!
Nothing much concrete has really changed for me in the last year (only major thing that happened was becoming an aunt, which is great!) but I feel I’m more comfortable in my own skin these days than I have ever been. Loving my 30s :)

  41. Jo R. says:

Congrats on 365 days of fun & creativity Susan! In the past year I’ve moved from southern Australia to northern Australia to be nearer to family, and I’m loving the warmer climate.

  42. Debbie Peysen says:

My life has changed greatly this last year. I have a chronic health problem that causes extreme pain. This last year they put a pain pump inside me that pumps medicine 24 hours a day. I still have pain but at a smaller level. I can now play with my dogs., walk with my husband and go to a craft store every once awhile. There are lots of things I can not do but I am trying to focus on the good ones. I am stamping again after 3 years of not doing it. What a miracle.

I so appreciate the small things in life. Thanks for sharing your life with me.

    debbie peysen

  43. Rachel S says:

In the last year we sold our house and moved to a new one. Also, my youngest graduated from preschool so this fall will bring huge changes for me. I’ve been a SAHM for 14 years and have done daycare in my home. Now I’ll be looking for a different part-time job out of the house.

  44. Adrienne F says:

I became a mom of 2 and now have a laundry room on the top floor of our house. The new addition to the family was definitely the highlight but the laundry room is a close second, LOL!

  45. bzyPTmom says:

Happy 1st anniversary and congrats on your weight loss–way to go! This has been quite a year for me also! I’ve changed big time–I finally discovered after 10 + years of misery that I have celiac disease–and I’ve learned to handle living with a wheat free, gluten free lifestyle–no easy task but one I think I’m doing well, I’m no longer tempted by goodies around me since I feel so much better NOT eating it!

  46. Janet K says:

The first thing of this topic thatI would have is about my baby son. I have been always imagine about him , how would he appear in person? I had him in my tummy and growing day after day, month after month and then pop! It is a baby boy weighed 3.6pounds. I was speechless when the nurse just placed him beside me. IT is a miracle !! And I am someone else mother. Thanks to God too for giving me a baby boy!

  47. Debbie Olson says:

    Congratulations on 1 year.
So many changes, new babies, unemployment, moving family, growing kids. Blogahollic. :) but i love it all.

  48. Linda E says:

The biggest change in the last year is that my sister moved 3,000 miles away to California. I now have to take the time difference into account before I call her.

  49. Janet Zeppa says:

In the last year, actually just recently,I started blogging. Small I know but not much has changed. I must be in a rut! LOL!!

  50. Laura Stewart says:

my biggest change has been a new job
