Welcome to Freebie Friday! This week has literally flown by! We had a blast at our annual Editorial Board Meeting. This was the first time all of the new Go-to Gals and the Paper Crafts team were in one room. Our Go-to Gals flew in on Monday, flew out on Wednesday and in between those short 48 hours, we found time to review all of last year’s magazines, concept all of next year’s issues, participate in two photo shoots, enjoy two dinner parties and laugh until our stomachs hurt. Who knew “working” could be so much fun!
And the fun continues because all next week we’ll be counting down the days until World Card Making Day arrives on Saturday, October 3. We’re once again partnering with creative editor Cath Edvalson and her Moxie Fab World blog. She’s taking a really fun approach that plays off the “world” title in her blog. If you thought Paper Crafts magazine couldn’t reach the far corners of the earth, wait until you see what Cath has in store! The global participation begins next Monday, so make sure you check back with us!

Magazine Monday– Have you ever wondered what cardmakers are like in England? Well, the wait is over because we’ll be spotlighting the UK-based publication PaperCraft inspirations. We’ll ask one of their editors all the questions you’ve been dying to know like their favorite occasions to paper craft, techniques they love and why paper crafting has such an universal appeal. And there will, of course, be a jolly good giveaway (said in my best English accent!).
Tuesday – Editor Susan R. Opel will spotlight the Celebrate section of the World Card Making Day web site. Who knew there were so many fun ways to commemorate this holiday? She also has some fun product from KI Memories up for grabs!
Wednesday – Since World Card Making Day officially kicks off the holiday card-making season, Paper Crafts Go-to Gal Kim Hughes will give us some valuable tips for mass producing cards. She’ll also talk about what retail store she’ll be visiting on World Card Making Day. And if you’re a fan of GCD Studios, she’s got some of their gorgeous product to give away!
Thursday – Managing Editor Brandy Jesperson will spotlight the Sponsors/Gallery sections of the World Card Making Day web site. She’ll also announce a fun contest, where five cards will be selected from the World Card Making Day gallery and spotlighted on this blog the week of Oct. 5-Oct. 9. If that wasn’t cool enough, she’s giving away some gorgeous Christmas product from SEI.

I think of card making as being a one-of-a-kind piece of artwork made with love for another person. I LOVE it!

Card making is a tangible expression of what we feel. It’s universal because people of all cultures like to know they are thought of in times of happiness and times of sorrow. I also think it’s much more meaningful to recieve a card in person or by mail than to open an email. You can feel, touch and smell the work that someone put into that card for you.

Cards have such a universal appeal because everyone loves to feel special- that is what a handmade card does….makes someone feel special and loved. I know that I feel that way when I receive a beautiful handmade card!

Card making has a universal appeal because they are tactile. An email or face book message is nice, but a card is anticipation of opening the envelope, the emotion of reading a message especially for you and then you can keep the card and remember that person and those moments for ever. Making a card for someone lets them know you think about them, you care about them and you took the time to sit down and create something special for them. In some situations it is hard to use words, so a thoughtful card is the best way how to express one´s thoughts and feelings. Cardmaking makes a better world!

I think card making has a universal appeal because of the creativity. No matter where a person is from or where they live, there is creativity in all of us waiting to emerge!

I think for women…. it is just a way to do something just for them in their own home. We get to spend time doing something we love and we use a different part of our brain than most of us don’t normally get to use! We can let the other side rest for a while!
Plus… we make something for the ones we love! -
I think the universal appeal has alot to do with the the wonderful array of sources that we have at our disposal. With the internet/computer, we can order/download practically anything we need to customize our handmade cards to say or look however we want them to. I use to dread going into a store to look for 5 minutes for a card “I thought” was just right. Now, I ‘d rather spend 5 hours making one card, knowing it is exactly how I want it to look and saying exactly what I want it to say. See you Saturday for the celebrations.

I think card making is great because even a beginner can do a lovely job, you don’t *have* to go to special classes to learn how to do it, such as pottery or whatever. cards are something everyone uses and receives. You almost always need a card for something, unlike that Father’s Day tie, which can get a bit old, you can customise it to your heart’s content, no more strolling up & down the card aisle trying to find the perfect one, your only limitations are your own creativity.

According to me.. cardmaking has such a universal appeal as its ONE thing whcih unites people from different parts of the world together.. there is no language or any other barrier in cardmaking and the techniques used on the cards can be totally shared..

I think that it’s because we are tired of things that are the same as million others. We all need sth unique. We also love to give an get sth made by hands, because it means that someone cares for us enough to spare some time and talent.

I believe that card-making is universally appealing because it’s deeply personal, not too expensive and because it brings thoughfulness and friendship into our lives, when we least expect it. In a time when almost everything is done electronically (email, texting, etc), a personalized, handmade card is tactile. You can go to the actual mailbox and open an actual envelope. You can look at the actual card and know that someone took the time and creative energy to create it just for you. You can enjoy it endlessly.

It’s so easy to make a quick card and feel creative! Then if you have more time you can make a more detailed or intricate card and feel really good. Besides who doesn’t need a card?? I love sending my creations to friends and family. A card can make someone’s day.

I think the most appealing thing about card making is knowing that someone made that card just for you! It makes a person feel special to know that thousands of other people aren ‘t getting the same card (like they would with a card from the store), that there’s is truely one of a kind.

I think the appeal comes from receiving something in your mail box… your actual mailbox and not your harddrive! Something that isn’t a bill… and that someone took the time to create… just for you! It’s makes you feel special and cared for. At least that’s what us crafters hope when we put an hour into creating the perfect card for someone!

I think that it’s because it can be a gift in itself; it’s very personal; it is faster than doing a scrapbook layout; there are so many gorgeous ideas and product out there to work with!

I think card making has such big universal appeal because everyone can do it, no matter your crafting expertise; it can be relatively quick and inexpensive if you need it to be and we all need to give cards for special occasions so it has that practical element to it too.

Small and quick to see results and who doesn’t like getting a homemade card. Training my children already by getting them to draw a picture or make a card from their craft stuff for their friends birthday – much more personal.
