Freebie Friday – Beware of Scary Sentiments!

Freebie Friday Beware of Scary Sentiments!

P. Kelly Smith

Welcome to Freebie Friday! Last week we bid a fond farewell to the last days of summer. And while I always mourn the loss of my flip-flops and snow cones, I know all good things will eventually come around again. So let’s embrace fall and all the colors, smells, textures and yes, even the cool air. For everything there is a season…

And before you know it, little ghosts and goblins will be creeping up your walkway in search of sugary treats for their plastic pumpkin pails. Whenever Halloween rolls around, I always think of my little two-year-old cousin. He’s now a cool dude of 11, but once upon a time he couldn’t pronounce his s’s very well. We were out trick or treating and he saw something that frightened him. He grabbed his mom’s hand and said, “Mommy, that was pooky and cary!” Add the s’s to front of those words and you’ll get what he was trying to say!

If you enjoy celebrating Halloween and paper crafting this “pooky and cary” time of year, we’re here to help! We have some frighteningly fun titles/quotes in the Simple Sentiments column (p. 89) of our September/October 2009 issue. Did you know that you can download every one of them right HERE?

Here’s a few of my favorites:

Who doesn’t like free quotes? I guess you could say today’s giveaway is for everyone! For those of you who need real, tangible product to awaken your inner paper goblin, you’re in luck! I have two Halloween collections (Spooked, Night Light) from My Mind’s Eye. Leave a comment telling me your favorite childhood Halloween costume and I’ll randomly pick two winners. All comments must be received by midnight (MST) on Sunday, Sept. 13.

Happy Downloading,
Kelly

P.S. Today is our former art director’s birthday! Since Halloween is Stace’s favorite time of year, I thought I would share this groovy picture of her:

Would anyone care for one of Stace's "magic" brownies? We dressed as hippies last Halloween, so her carrying a plateful of brownies actually made sense!

P.P.S. For those of you attending CKC-Nashville this weekend, make sure you say hi to two of our very own Paper Crafts peeps! Both Susan Neal and Susan Opel will be teaching some fun card classes you won’t want to miss!

Let’s see I think my favorite costume would have been the year I was a gypsy. I think it was 5th grade, maybe 6th. I even had the “mascara mole” lol.

  2. Angel S. says:

I remember many a Halloween dressed as a Christmas present. An old box with arm and leg holes, wrap and a big bow and I was ready!

  3. Jess says:

My favorite costume was when my mom made me Cleopatra in 6th grade. But I also love seeing the pictures of my first Halloween when I was only 11 days old and my Poppy had found me a kitty cat costume.

  4. Rhonda Miller says:

I guess my favorite must have been the old stand by as a Witch. Looking through some of my old pictures, it seems I dressed up as a witch a lot. In Jr. High it was alway a rock star. What fun. I love Halloween, I love watching my kids get excited and picking out their costumes. What fun.

  5. Cheri says:

I loved it the year that I was able to be the old lady from Snow White (the witch). I got to go to the thrift store and pick out what I called “old lady” clothes and I carried a basket with apples! It was awesome. Alas – I think that was the last year I dressed up….:-(

  6. NWFlamingo says:

I sent away with cereal boxtops and got a Huckleberry Hound mask that covered your entire head. It was cardboard and had little tabs you inserted in slots so you could take it apart. Years ago when I was a young mother I had a sweatshirt and sweat pants exactly the color of Huckleberry Hound so I found that mask packed away, fashioned a tail I could pin on, and wore it for Halloween at my son’s school Halloween celebration. Few of the kids knew who I was, but it was a great hit with the teachers.

  7. Isabel Z says:

Sad to say that I don’t remember any of my Halloween costumes but I do have a favorite of one of my boys. He decided to be an octopus and when we couldn’t find one in the store he insisted that I make it. A sewer I am not so I cut the entire thing out of felt and tried to glue it. That didn’t go to well b/c it fell apart overnight. So I had to hand sewn it which took forever. When I finished stuffing all eight tentacle it was so heavy that I had no idea how he was going to manage. He was determined to wear it and did so staggering the entire time.

  8. Michelle A. says:

Happy Bday Stace! I cant remember my costumes from when I was little but in middle school we all dressed up as bums. LOL

  9. Julie says:

Most memorable… I decided to be a “Mother” for Halloween. I wore an old bathrobe, had curlers in my hair, and carried around several baby dolls. No idea where this idea came from, but I remember it to this day!! I was probably 6 or 7.

  10. Donna VW says:

My favorite halloween costume was homemade. I went as a box of Nestle’s Quik and my sister went as a carton of milk. It took us forever to make the costumes, but we had fun!

  11. Rita Qualter says:

Since I had 2 older brothers, I always wore their hand-me-downs all torn up and went as a bum! Year after year after year after year!!!

Thanks for this chance to win!

    Rita

  12. Christina says:

I was Barbie in my plastic flammable outfit in elementary school. :-S

  13. Jessica B says:

I LOVE Halloween and dress up every year (even though I’m 35). My most memorable costume would have to be in first grade when I dressed as Raggedy Anne and my best friend (who was a boy) dressed as Raggedy Andy.

  14. Heather Garl says:

I had a green, rubber, scary monster mask. It was very cool looking {although, very hot to wear}. But I wore it with my dad’s army clothing and I thought I was very SCARY!

    Oh, I just love Fall!

  15. Sara Brinker says:

There were so many good ones!! My favorites were probably Strawberry Shortcake (who is back in…yeah!!) and Poochie the dog. Loved those plastic costumes and the hard plastic masks!! Amazing how things have changed costume wise!! You had to almost always were coats, etc. OVER your costume b/c it was always so cold here…then you looked like an Abdominable Snowman.

    Thanks!!

  16. Elaine Allen says:

Hmm, my favorite childhood halloween costume would have to be when my mom and grandmother helped me get made up like a 17th century lady, white powdered wig and all. I needed the outfit for a school play I was in (I was in the 6th grade), so my grandmother made me a long dress with a swagged bustle and my mother took a new mop head and curled and sprayed the heck out of it, put some glitter on it and pinned it to my head. Would you believe there is not one picture of me in that get-up! But I had so much fun that Halloween.

    Elaine Allen

  17. Tina B. says:

Ahhh i get to go down memory lane! My mom always made our costumes and one year she made me a black cat. I loved it because I matched with my Auntie. I was probably 10. I had this cute tail and whiskers…it was quite the outfit i must say. :)

  18. aimado says:

I love halloween. I like to do homemade costumes and one of my favorites was a California Raisin. Well they were singing big at that time! It was a garbage bag decorated with a big face and stuffed with balloons. It was really hard to walk in.

  19. Erika M says:

We never had a lot of money when I was growing up so mom dressed us as hobos most years.

  20. savannah O'Gwynn says:

I have two….the first fav costume was when I was only 8. My older bro and I were rock stars. I loved it- I had my hair teased so it stood straight up; we spray painted it (with hair color); I wore rock clothes (my mom made them); etc. I loved loved loved it. The other fav costume was when I was 12….I was a princess in a “real” prom dress. I was tall and odd sized–so the only dress that fit was this black prom dress from my neighbor. I LOVED that outfit–but I looked so much older than I was!!!

  21. Happy Birthday Stace!!

My favorite costume was when I was a 50′s girl. I think I wanted to be like Sandy from Grease! I think I looked more like a chick from American Graffiti! That’s OK though . . . I felt so cool!

When my husband and I got married, we went as pirates one Halloween. That was a cool costume too . . . I had the pirate wench look working for me!!

  22. LOVE Brandy’s card!! So so cute!

    Happy Birthday Stace!

Hmm, my favorite costume…I think the costume I felt the most proud of was the year I was a butterfly. I was 6 or 7 I think and I dressed in a black leotard and black leggings and my mom created these beautiful hand-painted wings out of cardboard. I even had antennae that she made from wire and cotton balls…I really felt like a butterfly!

  23. Jean says:

My favorite costume as a child was Ragedy Ann and Andy. My Mother was so talented! She made my brother and I costumes of Ragedy Ann and Andy. I love to look back at the picture. It makes me smile. The time and talent she put into these costumes was amazing. To this day I still dress up as Ragedy Ann every Halloween as a tribute to my Mother who is no longer with us. Unfortunately, I did not get her creative sewing talent so mine is store bought. I would give anything to have one made by her again!

    Jean

  24. Monty Carter says:

Halloween costume for me was being a clown, making my own outfit was lots of fun.

  25. Tina says:

My favorite halloween costume as a kid was Bugs Bunny. I loved it so much, I dressed up two years in a row as Bugs and even earned the nickname from Bugs from a neighbor.

  26. I’m not sure what my favorite was actually, but the funniest one I remember was borrowing a football players uniform from school and wearing that one year. Pants, shoulder pads, the works! It was super uncomfortable (and super huge)!! :) I should have just worn the jersey with jeans, but no, I had to do the whole uniform!

  27. rebecca keppel says:

When I was in elementary school I went as a bunch of grapes. And not just purple balloons taped onto me….my Mom sewed the whole thing and it looked fabulous. I think I even won a prize that year in our town!

  28. Mary A says:

I don’t remember that many of my costumes over the years, but I am sure I was a witch (probably several years in a row), and a certain tomato costume also brings back some memories… :) Thanks!

  29. LaurieH says:

My favorite costume was the clown costume that I made myself. It was quite an accomplishment to get it done and so many people complimented me on my costume.

  30. Lindzie H says:

Favorite costume was the year I was a genie because my mom made the costume.

  31. Debbi says:

We lived in the country on a farm when I was a kid. We didn’t go to town to Trick or Treat. We gathered at our country church and bobbed for apples and had popcorn balls. One year I did dress up like an Indian. Lots of good memories.

  32. nina says:

My favourite was a sandwich board style Queen of Hearts my sister hand-drew for me. It was amazing – it looked just like the fancy Queen in a deck of cards. I think we still have it somewhere…

  33. Mel says:

It has to be my wonder woman get up from about 1980…my niece had to wear the same costume…both were homemade, but oh so cool…complete with gold painted baler twine as our magic lassos….we looked way cute.

  34. Malia Leuck says:

My favorite halloween costume was dressing up as punky brewster! I was a brunette with freckles so it didn’t take much. I adored her tomboyishness and fun. But my all-time favorite kids costume ever was when my friend dressed her daughter as frida kahlo, complete with unibrow and flowers in her hair. soooo cute!

  35. Candy says:

My favorite halloween costume was dressing up like a doctor.

  36. Jessica K says:

I had three favorite costumes.. The first costume my mom over attempted making was Cheer Bear of the Care Bears. It took her forever.. and was well cherished, I was 5. In 3rd grade, she made rainbow brite and it was AWESOME! I looked JUST like rainbow brite! As I got older and wanted “older costumes” my next favorite was a bag of popcorn. She made the bag and my dad popped garbage bags full of popcorn to put INSIDE my bag. So I was a walking bag of popcorn. I love halloween :)

  37. Anne B. says:

I live in Finland and we don’t celebrate Halloween, so no costume. :)

  38. cards4ever says:

My favorite costume when I was little was an angel.

  39. Shari says:

A wind blown accountant…….wire in the tie, moose or gel in the hair…open briefcase.
    ~Shari R.

  40. Barbara says:

I’ll never forget when my baby sister and I ended up buying cow costumes one year because we waited till the last minute to make our selection. It just so happened that mad cow’s disease was all over the news that year so we bought the make-up kit and painted ourselves up as two “mad cows”…..

  41. Linda B. says:

Love those digi quotes and titles. The card is quite “pooky” and adorable. Who couldn’t use more of MME’s papers. FABULOUS! Thanks for your RAK giveaway. Linda

  42. bzyPTmom says:

Hmmm–love Halloween! My fav costume was a witch, loved the hat. Because as a kid I always seemed to be able to predict the blizzards–my bro’s called me a witch! So I loved dressing up as one–I still can predict the weather–because my arthritic joints hurt when a storm is approaching!

  43. Linda B. says:

Uh oh, forgot to put my favorite costume. Blues Brothers with my friend Chris.

  44. Jeri M says:

My favorite costume was when I was around 8yrs old and they had come out with these costumes that had these blow up heads..lol They were pretty funny looking…but you would blow the ‘mask head’ up and it would be this huge gobblin or whatever sitting on the top of your head. I think it was so the childs eyes wouldn’t be covered by the face masks lol so you wore them on your head instead lol Just something I always remembered and thought was so cool…at the time..lol

  45. Lori Y says:

Without a doubt it was Wonder Woman!

  46. Linda C. says:

It was a Princess! Thanks for the free downloads!

  47. Jenny McGee says:

One year my mom made my son an elf costume. It was sooo cute. My other son was a band leader that we made too. The homemade costumes are always better than the store bought, that’s for sure. Thanks for a chance to win.

  48. marcia H. says:

Halloween, what a great time of year I remember being able to go out Halloween night and staying out til after 11 pm which was a big deal back when I was young, my costumes were usually home made old pants scarfs hats and black coal for color most of the time turned out to be a hobo but I remember the fun oh what fun my sisters, brothers and I had. Its a shame we have to be so careful these days.

  49. michelle says:

my favorite halloween costume as a child was when I dressed up as a goblin. it scared me, but it was the old school costumes that were plastic pull ons and had the top you blew up and and wore on your head and tied under your chin. The funniest part was as we were trick or treating (my bro and sis) his ballooned goblin head was pierced my a low hanging branch and it popped!! Too funny!

  50. Denise says:

We were not going out trick or treating one year so I dressed up as my mom – teased my hair BIG and put random curlers hanging in it, dressed in big fluffy furry pink slippers and an oversized big terry robe, and held a big wooden rolling pin in one hand while passing out candy with the other to trick or treaters. I still laugh at how funny I looked and the smirky look my mom gave me all night! LOL!
