Freebie Friday – Beware of Scary Sentiments!

Freebie Friday Beware of Scary Sentiments!

P. Kelly Smith

Welcome to Freebie Friday! Last week we bid a fond farewell to the last days of summer. And while I always mourn the loss of my flip-flops and snow cones, I know all good things will eventually come around again. So let’s embrace fall and all the colors, smells, textures and yes, even the cool air. For everything there is a season…

And before you know it, little ghosts and goblins will be creeping up your walkway in search of sugary treats for their plastic pumpkin pails. Whenever Halloween rolls around, I always think of my little two-year-old cousin. He’s now a cool dude of 11, but once upon a time he couldn’t pronounce his s’s very well. We were out trick or treating and he saw something that frightened him. He grabbed his mom’s hand and said, “Mommy, that was pooky and cary!” Add the s’s to front of those words and you’ll get what he was trying to say!

If you enjoy celebrating Halloween and paper crafting this “pooky and cary” time of year, we’re here to help! We have some frighteningly fun titles/quotes in the Simple Sentiments column (p. 89) of our September/October 2009 issue. Did you know that you can download every one of them right HERE?

Here’s a few of my favorites:

I have two Halloween collections (Spooked, Night Light) from My Mind’s Eye. Leave a comment telling me your favorite childhood Halloween costume and I’ll randomly pick two winners. All comments must be received by midnight (MST) on Sunday, Sept. 13.

Happy Downloading,
Kelly

P.S. Today is our former art director’s birthday! Since Halloween is Stace’s favorite time of year, I thought I would share this groovy picture of her:

Would anyone care for one of Stace's "magic" brownies? We dressed as hippies last Halloween, so her carrying a plateful of brownies actually made sense!

P.P.S. For those of you attending CKC-Nashville this weekend, make sure you say hi to two of our very own Paper Crafts peeps! Both Susan Neal and Susan Opel will be teaching some fun card classes you won’t want to miss!

oh how fun! i’ve never played with digital paper/sentiments/anything before so i will have to give these a try.

I’ve always loved Halloween and my favorite costume would be when I was a tiger. It was handmade by my grandma and had been worn previously by my aunt. It fit me perfectly when I was in 6th grade and I loved having a hand-made unique costume.

  5. Janice L. says:

I love Halloween time. My favorite costume was a Princess. It was from one of my Aunt’s Prom dresses! Of course all in Pink. My Mom then made a wand and crown to complete the look.

  6. laure998 says:

In France where I grew up we don’t have Halloween but you dress up in costumes for Mardi Gras. The costume I loved the most was a ladybug. I looked so cute in it and since then I have a real fondness for this adorable critter.

my favorite costume is tigger from winnie the pooh with whiskers drawn on with a black marker (very hard to wash off ) but as kids who knew that?

My fav costume was the year my three kids and I made their costumes, My oldest son was Captain Hook, his brother was Peter Pan – green tights and all and the baby girl was Tinkerbell. They were so darn cute!

  11. Brenda L. says:

I remember one of my costumes from back in the late 50′s. It was not my favorite. As a matter of fact, it was the worst because I could not manuver myself in it. It was pure missery. This is why I will never forget it. Robots were popular at that time and my Mom found an article about taking a box with two eye holes over your head with the old T.V. tubes attached to it. It was bad!!!

  12. Cynthia B. says:

My favorite costume from my own childhood was the ONLY costume I ever had. It was a Barbie costume that my sister had handed down to me. We didn’t have much, so we all took turns wearing it for a couple of Halloweens.
Now…ask me about my KIDS’ costumes, and I could name a couple…Bob the Builder and a “rock-star” look for my son, a little ladybug and Pooh for my daughter…since I didn’t have much as a kid, I like to different things for my own kids every year!
Thanks for the chance to win these awesome Halloween products!

  18. jen says:

My mom never was too into Halloween costumes when we were little- looking back it was probably because we didn’t have the extra $ for them! I remember she took down some curtains that were red with white pom-pom fringe & made us skirts- I think we were gypsies. My Mom still doesn’t sew except to fix buttons, so that was pretty awesome! :D

  19. Jennifer says:

Oh geeze… definitly my blue bunnie costume… so warm and cozy and received so many compliments when I was young wearing it!

I had a Snow White mask with red red lips. And I wouldn’t let my mom cut a slit in it so that I could be hear when I talked. The lips were just gorgeous!!!!

  33. Shelby says:

My favorite Halloween costume was a picnic table. Yes, a picnic table! My outfit was out of a table cloth and then we glued plastic foods too it! I won “most creative” that year at school.

  34. That makes me wish I still lived in Nashville. I guess one costume I remember from Halloween was being a gypsy. It was a quick costume to throw together in the last minute with things we had around the house, but it was still cute.

  35. Janet Sisk says:

My favorite Halloween costume was a pink butterfly. We lived in WI at the time and my Dad spent a lot of time crafting my beautiful pink wings. I had a pink leotard, pink tights and pink shoes. I was so excited – until – it snowed all day on Halloween. I ended up having to wear UGLY snowboots and a coat over my beautiful costume. I remember being SO devastated. I can look back on it and laugh, but back then it was not so funny at all. LOL Thanks for a chance to win some awesome goodies, too.
    PS
    Happy B’day to Stace, too.

My fav costume was as an adult, a friend and I dressed up in poodle skirts, letter sweaters, pearls, saddle shoes and cat eye glasses! We loved our costumes!

  39. My favorite costume when I was a child was one that my mom and me made together. We took a huge box, cut a neck hole and two arm holes, painted it white and then put dots on it. I dressed all in black and I was a die. You know one of a pair of dice. I think doing this project myself and working with my mom made it such a special memory. Thanks for the free quotes.
    xoxo, Christine

  40. Cyndi J says:

I don’t remember any of my childhood costumes. But one of the bars in my hometown has a halloween party every year and encourages costumes. So I took a black sheet and cut a hole in it, found the ugliest witch mask, a pointed hat, put on black fake nails and then in one of those plastic pumpkins I put some of those fake plastic eyes and lots of plastic bugs. I went around the bar not talking to anyone, but pretending to pick things out of their hair or, when they weren’t looking, dropping one of my eyes or bugs into their drinks.

  41. Dawne Carlisle says:

When I was a child I dressed up as a loaf of Wonder Bread… I used a sheet as the body of the costume and stapled big circles of construction paper to the sheet.. We tied a ribon around my neck as the bread tie. It turned out super cute… and so economical! I won the costume contest!

  42. Teresa Mariotti says:

What fun to remember….2 friends and I made black & yellow bumble bee costumes complete with antennae!

  43. Remember Sheri Lewis and her cute sock puppet Lambchop? That was my favorite costume at age 4! Too cute!

  44. rap says:

I don’t remember it but there is a picture of me at about 3 in jailbird costume. I think it was a pair of jail stripe pjs that I had already and some how they attached a ball and chain to me. I won a prize in a halloween contest.

  45. Elizabeth Williams says:

I carefully scrolled to make sure I had not already done this, if I have please check it up to a senior moment. My favorite would have to be the time I went as an outhouse-fashioned out of a washing machine cardboard box,it was truly hilarious!

My favorite Halloween costume was a Geisha girl – my Mom had a real kimono from Japan and did my makeup. I felt so grown up. Thanks for the chance to win!

  49. Melanie C says:

    My fave was Raggedy Ann
