Freebie Friday – Endless Summer

 Freebie Friday Endless Summer

P. Kelly Smith

Welcome to Freebie Friday! I want to thank everyone for all of their sweet comments to our departing Paper Crafts Pros. They are a talented bunch of ladies and they will be sorely missed! It’s a good thing we’ll still see their creativity from time to time – both in future issues and at Creating Keepsakes Conventions. If you haven’t ever taken a CKC class from one of these crafty gals, you’re definitely missing out! Click HERE to see if one is coming to a city near you!

I hope everyone is looking forward to our upcoming Labor Day weekend. Labor Day is always a bittersweet holiday for me. While I love all the sights and smells of fall, when Labor Day arrives, I know summer is officially over. The kids all go back to school, the nights gets increasingly darker and the autumn chill starts to creep in. I guess that’s why I try to make the most of June, July and August… I know these warm, magical months will fade just as quickly as they arrived.

I just returned from glorious week up in the mountains of McCall, Idaho. I sort of hinted to my grandma that a girls week would be a lot fun (and a great way to use up my vacation days). Never the subtle one, my grandma then took the reins and approached my aunt (who actually owns the beautiful condo on the picturesque lake). Lucky for us the condo was available, so my grandma, aunt, mom, sister and dog (she’s a girl, too!) all made the trek up to our little piece of heaven on earth.

By day: we swam, kayaked, water-skied and soaked up the sun.

By night: we took moonlit boat rides!

And since it was a girls retreat, we even found time to paper craft! My aunt found these metal advertising signs at a dollar store and then spray-painted them with black chalkboard paint. We cut out circles from patterned paper and adhered them to glass pebbles to create magnets. Since I LOVE to fussy cut, I cut out some pretty flowers and adhered them to the bottom of the board. Add some pretty ribbon, Thickers to spell “Memo” and you’ve got an adorable magnet board ready to hang!

These magnet boards are so easy to make! Can you guess what fun activity we'll be doing at our card group this month?

I spent the summer enjoying my house. I moved in last summer and spent so much time getting it the way I wanted it – this summer it was time to reap the rewards :) (especially in my crafting room!!)

  5. Janet Sisk says:

I got to go on two trips this summer. The first to Mackinac Island which was fabulous. It reminded me of Bermuda, only not as warm! LOL The second trip I took with my hubby of 25 years. We went to Negril in Jamaica for our anniversary. It was the best! Now back to work at a school. Summer is always too short! Thanks for the chance to win some great goodies!

  6. Holly says:

We’ll we didn’t get to do much fun stuff this summer, my husband job keeps him busy. We did get to move which was very exciting for us! We are in a much better house now.

  7. Terri Michalenko says:

    It’s a good life!

  10. Joan Schmaltz says:

I had the best trip this summer! My grandaughter did a missionary program in Rome and my daughter and I went over to pick her up. We then spent a week in Paris in a fabulous rented apartment. Of course, I brought my little craft bag along with a few projects that had all their pieces. I spent a little alone time playing with my projects while they went to the climb the Eiffel Tower on a beautiful night with a full moon. What a joy it was to have 3 generations together in such a wonderful city.

  11. Dayna Johnson says:

Our summer went by way too fast. I spent my summer doing a little bit of traveling and then hustling kids back and forth to camps and activities.

  12. Melanie C says:

No traveling this summer for us. But we are going to Maui in October :)

  13. Prairie Girl says:

Thanks for sharing those pics! Here on the Canadian Prairies we’re only *now* getting a taste of Summer. August brought us a few nice, sunny, hot days. I was able to go to the beach a couple of times and check out small town summer festivals. I also took a trip to Toronto and Niagara Falls and we had gorgeous days!

  14. Tiffany says:

This summer seemed to pass us by this year! We did get to go swimming and shopping a few times though. We also took trips to the flea market and farmer’s market, which is my favorite thing to do! And of course, I spent as much time crafting as I could! I still can’t believe summer is over!

  15. melanie says:

Summer went so fast this year and it rained and rained in the Atlantic provinces but it has been gorgeous the last few weeks. We’ve spent as much time as a family as we could this year, whether it was walking or going to the beach. The highlight was a trip to Cape Breton, NS and seeing the gorgeous Cabot Trail, awesome!

  16. Kim says:

I spent my summer allowing myself to just be. No rushing here and there, no additional commitments. I read, I slept, I created. Saved money and vacationed at home. Saw my friends, family and played a lot of fetch with my dachshund. It was wonderful.

  17. Baileigh L says:

I spent my summer with my family boating and swimming and fishing (with my dad). It was great! I did alot of scrapbooking and cardmaking with my mom, too!

  18. NWFlamingo says:

I spent most of the summer trying to stay ahead of the weeds. Did okay in the garden, but the flower beds got away from me. I also spent a considerable amount of time trying to discourage the neighborhood moles!

  19. Teresa says:

We spent our summer working on our ranch. We didn’t get to take a trip this year because of all our new animals but we had fun around here.

  20. Sarah says:

We had a soggy start to the summer, but it is looking great now. Since we don’t have kids, we don’t think it ends today. :-)

We implemented a new family activity – Friday Fun Day. I have Fridays off, and we spent the last year using our weekends building our new house. Now that it is almost done, we decided not to let the summer escape with no fun. Sometimes it is just going to our favorite take-out place for lunch, or going for a drive, but we have made a point to do something fun on Fridays. Earlier this summer it often was go to the movies as all it did was RAIN in June and July!

  21. Cassi says:

our summer gettaway is this coming weekend. i’m looking forward to our brief beach trip. otherwise the summer was busy with work and volunteering.

  22. Krafty Kelly says:

We didn’t have much of a summer this year in terms of weather but we tried to take advantage of the days that didn’t rain… although I have to admit that I had a hard time keeping up with mowing the lawn… LOL.

We finally planted a vegetable garden and we have been enjoying the “veggies” of our labours…

Mostly though, we spent time together, as a family just hanging out on rainy days watching Barbie movies and eating cereal…

    Ahhh summer.

  23. Charlene says:

Summer was the sweetest. Even though I got laid off, it was a blessing. I spent time with my nieces & nephew, swimming in our pool. I went camping with my boyfriend and his family, we went to Lake Tahoe for a wedding, we went to Napa for my birthday. I started an online scrapbook products company and I have been crafting and blogging more! It’s been a GREAT summer. :) Cosmo Cricket it my favorite and Snorkel is adorable! Hope I win!

  24. Karen says:

I don’t ever understand the statement about lazy days in summer. We have so much fun to be had. Camps, volunteer opportunities at church, swimming lessons, gardening, crafting , researching, and all the sunshine to fill up on to make it through the winter in Minnesota. Today was my first day to sit in the sun to a couple of hours. It was a great summer. I even got my first cosmo cricket paper packs. Neat new cards to make! Oh… I got the Christmas Cards done!!!Whoo Hoo!

  25. kristy c. says:

spent a couple weeks at the beach, a couple more weeks toting kids to camp and classes and then just enjoying life and my kids.

  26. Laura Stewart says:

didn’t do much here except work on the house

  27. Helen F. says:

LOVE your photos from McCall Idaho…Looks like a perfect “girl’s getaway” spot! Living in Florida, we always have ‘summer weather’ (please don’t hate me :) So my husband and I like to go to New England during our ‘summer vacations’ and this year we went somewhere really cool…Alaska! It was awesome with breathtaking views of mountains and glaciers everywhere!

  28. Meredith K. says:

This summer I really just tried to spend time enjoying my husband’s company before he deployed. EVerything is better when I can share it with him. Thanks for the chance to win.

  29. denise says:

We had a very productive summer. We start a vegetable garden again, the only difference is that we finally had a few vegetable. Continued on our on going house painting, almost half done.

  30. Shelly P says:

  31. Maureen W. says:

We spent most of the summer sitting around sweating – it was SO HOT here! We also went to the beach a lot – what a relief!

  32. angela Siburt says:

I spent most of my summer at the pool when it wasn’t raining.

  33. Brenda L. says:

  34. Yvette says:

we took some mini (long weekend) vacations this summer. WE stayed close to home and took the kids to Kings Island and other fun things in Cincinnati!!

  35. Linda B. says:

I spent the summer in my garden (mostly weeding) and also in my craft room getting things organized….which is what I’ll still be doing in the fall, winter and probably next spring. Maybe then I’ll finally be organized.

    Happy Labor Day Weekend!
