Teri Anderson

I’m just going to put it out there. My name is Teri, and I am an eyelet hoarder.

I have been hoarding eyelets for years now, since I first got into paper crafting. I have every color of eyelet you can imagine: red; red-orange; pink; dark pink; green; green-blue and many more.

Funny thing is for all the hoarding I wasn’t using them. So I recently dumped all of my eyelets into a spice jar. I put it on my craft table and left it out so I would see them every time I sat down to play. Guess what? It’s working. I’m making more cards and scrapbook pages than ever with eyelets on them. And I’m rediscovering long-forgotten, fun ways to use them.

I used eyelets to make the circle on this card.

I used a placement template from Timeless Touches to mark the holes for the eyelets. If you don’t have the template, you could do the same thing by drawing a circle with a pencil and marking the spots for your eyelets.

I also used eyelets for the flower centers on this card.

The eyelets provided a nice alternative to the brads and gems I normally use for flower centers.

I also like to use eyelets to:

  • Embellish patterned paper. It’s fun to randomly add them to the circles and squares that often appear on patterned papers.
  • Make hearts and letters with them. Draw your letter or heart with a pencil and then poke holes for the eyelets.
  • Adhere sentiment strips and tags to cards.

Are you an eyelet hoarder, too? Tell me about it. What ideas do you have for using them? If you are not an eyelet fan, is there a supply you hoard? Leave me a comment and I’ll pick one random winner to receive both of my eyelet cards shown above. All comments must be received by midnight (MST) on Thursday, Sept. 17.

I would have to say I’m a horader! I just love what you did with the eyelets. I have some templates that makes images with eyelets, that I might just have to pull out after seeing your inspiring cards.

  7. Elaine Allen says:

Yes – I am an eyelet hoarder. I use eyelets for the center of flowers, as joints for paper dolls, as well as reinforcement for ribbon on cards. I also hoard brads, punches and paper (stamps too, but let’s not go there). I love both cards you’ve made.

  8. June Houck says:

Yes, I’m a hoarder. I prefer to use the term “collector.” Or, as my dear blog friend Lauren would say, “I think of it as being really, REALLY prepared.” LOL! Yes I used eyelets quite often and had to have every Making Memories (MM) color to coordinate with their papers and floss when I started scrapping in 2004. Then brads came along, and the eyelets were ignored. Now I try to use buttons first, then brads, then eyelets. Poor neglected eyelets! I have all of my eyelets and brads organized in those wonderful MM clear organizers. I still use the eyelets when I can’t find a button or brad that matches.

Thanks for the reminder that I can use them to create shapes or highlight a pattern in my scrapbook paper.

This time of year, as I start to create autumn-themed cards, I like to tie a bit of raffia between two eyelets as an embellishment.

  9. Karen B says:

Teri – not only do I “collect: eyelets but I also collect snaps. I will really the look of snaps for the center of flowers. Whenever I see eyelets or snaps I buy.

  10. Karen says:

Well, it doesn’t stop with one thing, there is the paper, ribbon, eyelets, do-dads… Many creative ideas floating around! I need to use them!

  11. I don’t buy a lot of embellishments but I just can’t seem to resist self adhesive pearls/bling and ribbon!

  12. Veronica B. says:

i loved this blog entry today. very cute samples and wonderful ideas for eyelets. i don’t think i’m an eyelet hoarder but i do think i’m a paper hoarder. it’s so hard sometimes to use a favorite paper when it looks so pretty in all of its 12×12 glory!

  13. mloukirby says:

Teri, I’ve got tons of eyelets and I need to put a jar on my craft table! You’ve inspired me with your cards.

  14. Jane says:

Oh my……it would be buttons for me!!!!!! I’ve got Making Memories buttons, Basic Grey and Papertrey Ink buttons and I don’t use them…….too pretty……so I started making my own buttons out fimo! lol!!

  15. carol H says:

I am a paper hoarder. Every time I go to a scrapbook store I have to check out the paper. I loved the way you used the eyelets. Have to get more creative then maybe I can use up some of my hoarded paper.

  17. Samantha T. says:

I like to thread ribbon or twine through my eyelets. The jumbo ones are especially great for threading thick ribbon.

  18. Mary Ashby says:

Yes, I must admit I am a hoarder too… Mostly scrapbook supplies (I keep thinking I will have time to make a TON of progress), stamps, paper, ribbon. Oh, and rub-ons. And alterables. And hardware. Hmmm… Thanks!

  19. ~amy~ says:

a-dorable cards Teri!! I hoard everything :) Thanks for the fabbie eyelet inspiration!!

Teri I love your cards…All of them!!! These two are so cute and great inspiration. I’m a hoarder..mostly patterned paper. I can’t resist it!! In fact, I’m one of those who buy it because of its beauty, then don’t want to use because it’s so beautiful!! You are my favorite Go-to-Girl..everyday a card to see..Thanks!!

  21. I have tons, and yup never use them. I guess I’ll have to plan a play date!

  22. Mel says:

Oh, am I right there with ya. Three boxes FULL of eyelets…every possible color, type size, big, little, shaped, got them all, in multiples. But, I do love them and do use them, though not as much as I should!

  23. Anabelle says:

I love your eyelet cards! I so have to break mine out and use them! I am a hoarder of Thickers. I could cover the walls of my house with them!

  24. Jennifer says:

Oh my… I feel your eyelet joy! I have gone crazy over them. I have limited myself these last few months and have not picked up any new ones. I like you set them out on my desk and use them a lot more then when they were stored out of sight. Having things at your fingertips works wonders! : )

  25. Cheryl says:

I’m not really a hoarder nor collector, but loved your cards – gave me some ideas so now I’ll have to go buy some eyelets!

  26. Jenn C. says:

I don’t own many eyelets and never remember to use them, I love her HI card though :)

  27. Oh, I only have about a BAZILLION eyelets! I haven’t really used them much at all lately…occasionally I’ll bring them out and lace them or decorate a scalloped edge, but nothing as inspired as your amazing creations! That “hi” card blows me away!

  28. Christina says:

I’m too afraid of eyelets!!! I have never used them but now that I see what amazing things you can do with them, I may have to give it a try myself!

  29. Elizabeth S. says:

I have to admit that I have eyelets and hardly use them. I have many in cases but are in a cabinet and forget I have them when I sit down to create and then I see some and realize that I could have used those. After seeing your cards, I am going to have to get them out and use some. Thank you for reminding me!

  30. Heather Garl says:

Usually I just forget what supplies I have! I think the thing I hoard is my pattern paper…I sometimes think “I have to save that”! It’s so crazy…use it!

  31. jen says:

Yep. I’m a hoarder too. Not just eyelets I’m afraid. Pretty paper as well. I’m working to overcome the problem, and have been using brand new things on cards! Hooray! I love what Teri did with the eyelets on these cards- may have to give that a try!! :D

  32. Mary says:

Hi….I’m Mary, and I’m a hoarder. I have bazillions of eyelets, brads, buttons, ribbon, paper, and I have a hard time using it all. There should be a 12 step program for this. I am definitely going to have to try some of these cute cards!! LOVE THEM!

  33. Laura says:

That card with the circle of eyelets completely knocked my socks off — I love it!!!

I’ve never used eyelets (am new to the hobby) — do you use something like a Cropadile (which some people say smashes the eyelets to bits if you’re not careful) — or the tool that you must hammer? I do my creative stuff after my daughter is in bed on the other side of the wall from my desk, so. . . . Thanks!!

  34. Michelle A. says:

I am not a hoarder, I am just a collector :) I collect everything pretty in the craty world.

  35. Lindzie H says:

I, too, am a eyelet hoarder…and a button, ribbon, rub-on hoarder. My use of it involves using them every time I make something.

  36. Robin W. says:

I love the “Hi” card; it’s just so happy! I hoard chip board letters. I love them and can’t seem to stop buying more; I mean you never know when you might need another “e” right! :)

  37. Meredith K. says:

LOVED your ‘hi’ card Teri. I don’t hoard eyelets, but I certainly have more than my fair share… ;)

  38. diane mcvey says:

If having a stamping room that resembles a store, then I’m a hoarder, too! LOL I’m not into eyelets as deeply as you; but I do tend to buy every spool of beautiful ribbon that I find!!! I have so much ribbon, it’s ridiculous! But it’s fun to look at, and I enjoy finding ribbon to add to my collection!
Your cards are just precious…I LOVE that circle! What a great, colorful idea! That would be precious to send to my grandsons. I’ll have to remember that, for sure! And who doesn’t have a bazillion flowers, that need centers? Another great use for them! Thanks for the inspiration!!! :D

  39. I too am a hoarder…I figured they would be making a comeback…so now I don’t have buy them new again… I add them to flower and use them to allow things to swing out on my cards and pages

  40. Jenn Embry says:

I love your “hi” card! So fun and cheerful. I too have a ton of eyelets in a wide range of colors. I don’t use them as often as I should though. I agree that they are a fabulous look for the centers of flowers. I also like to do a line of them on a card or page and weave organdy ribbon through them.

  41. Elaine says:

Yep, I’m guilty of hoarding them. My problem though is getting their placement where I want. Even with a template :( I do love the cards you shared though – I would LOVE to be able to do those!!! :)

  42. Jaquelyn says:

I love eyelets! Unfortunately, I don’t have a big collection…I usually have a great idea about what I want to do with eyelets, but then I don’t have the right size, color, etc. So I actually need to expand my stash! =)

  43. i use eyelets on my flowers. I think they look better then a brad. I also have a whole stash of frog eyelets cause i think they look super cute on my sons pages. i also have some train ones that i used on a few layouts.

  44. Christine says:

I’m an eyelet hoarder but only because I can’t figure out anything to do with them. Thanks for the ideas!!!

    Blessings,
    Christine

  45. Shari says:

Geeee Teri – thanks for reminding me thaqt i have a ton of them, and I will have to put them out where I can see them! One time I used them for eyes – turned out cute.
    ~Shari R.

  46. Ramona West says:

I remember when I first found out about about eyelets how awed I was that it was so easy to set them. I used a hammer then. It fascinated me because years ago you had to pay a ton for the tools to set an eyelet! lol!
I have not used them in a long time. Now I am going play with them.

  47. Tina B. says:

hehe i just went to Michael’s today and found I am a scrapbook paper hoarder. I see such cute darn stuff and i MUST have it. :) I am a brad “hoarder”. I use them a lot when I take apart silk flowers and put them back together using cute decorative brads. I then use them for my little girl’s hairclips or cute pages OR cute cards! Thanks for the inspiration for eyelets!

  48. Marta Fosco says:

Guilty! My stash of eyelets is only surpassed by that of brads … and maybe ribbon. I’m following your lead and store them in see-thru containers and keep them at eye level – maybe I’ll start using them more. I love your cards. Marta

  49. Brooke says:

I can’t walk into my craft room as it’s a disaster zone so yesterday I took out a big file of odd papers and bits and started making cards with my old scraps that I haven’t touched in a LONG time. It’s part of my “use up the old stuff” process of cleaning up my mess.

This morning (before coming on the net) I was thinking “I have a lot of eyelets and I haven’t used them in a long time” and then I came on here and you just must have known that I’m an eyelet hoarder too!

I thought they were ancient history and was wondering whether I should save them incase they make their come back. But really I should take up your challenge and use them up. I’ll let you know what I create.

Love the “Hi” card. Maybe I’ll do a “Joy” version for Christmas.

  50. Cynthia B says:

Yes, I am an eyelet hoarder…and a ribbon addict, and a paper collector. ;)
Thanks for the ideas about using eyelets. In addition to using them as flower centers, I’ve also created eyelet “flowers” – just arrange a bunch of same color eyelets into circles and add matching patterned paper as the flower center. It makes for a nice effect AND uses up some of that precious stash. ;)
