Merry Hallowistmas!

Jennifer Schaerer

Even though Halloween is still a month away, it’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas…at least around here in the Paper Crafts editorial office! Our November/December issue is now on sale, so if you don’t subscribe and still need to get a copy, click HERE to get one.

Better yet, just subscribe — you’ll save yourself 40% and get the issue in your mailbox before it’s available on the newsstand. A subscription also makes a great gift, and — psssst, don’t tell anyone — Christmas is just around the corner. Hee hee!

We’re so excited about this cover, too. When we choose cards for our cover, they have to have a certain, well, something. Maybe it’s a color combination, or a particular style, or a good representation of the cards throughout the magazine. It’s usually an agonizing process because we always have so many fantastic cards to choose from, and this cover was no exception. It turns out that Rae Barthel (our cute Gallery Idol for 2009) and Kim Hughes (newly minted Paper Crafts Go-to Gal) were the best of the best for this issue, because their cards (TWO from Rae!) are the shining stars of this cover.

We also freshened up our cover layout a bit as well — can you tell what’s different?

Our November/December 2009 issue goes on sale TODAY!

Even though it’s Christmas in what we affectionately call “magazine time,” in reality it’s Halloween that’s up next. And we’re reminded of that every week when we have our team meeting, because we have an agenda item called Team Halloween Costume. You know that we take all festive occasions very seriously around here, and Halloween is one of the biggest — so of course it’s a topic in our weekly meeting.

This year we want to do something fun, because we’re a team of 7 women and one man. We’ve thought about cheerleader/football player (with Matt as the cheerleader…) and doctor/nurse (with Matt as the…nurse, of course!). But then we got to thinking that we could get a whole bunch of great ideas by asking our readers to toss in their collective two cents.

So whaddya think? Do you have a great idea for our group Halloween costume this year? Put it in the comments, and if we end up using your idea there will be a special something that comes your way from the Paper Crafts super stash of cool blog prizes.

Merry Hallowistmas to you,
Jennifer

P.S. Did I mention that we take Halloween very seriously? To give you an idea of just how far we take a theme, here’s a picture of us from Halloween 2008.

I’ve already got the magazine and I love it! We’ll be doing the trunk a treat at the school again this year and I haven’t yet decided on a theme with my team yet – last year we were a high school soccer team.

  2. Donna VW says:

What about Snow White and “her” 7 friends?

  3. Kelly says:

i ditto donna’s ‘snow white’ vote! [nothing original from me--too early!] can’t wait for the mail today, and to see what your costumes will be! ~k

  4. liz says:

Ooohh…Snow White and the 7 dwarfs would be a good one!

  5. lynn says:

matt could be the “king of hearts” card with the girls being the “hearts”!

  6. HOw about Beauty and the Beast with Mrs. Pots, The candle, the clock, the baby cup and Gascon. :D

  7. Wendy says:

How about Retro” pick a time period 60′s or 70′s and dress for business during that time.

  8. hehehehe.. that picture made me giggle… HMMM Count Dracula
    and his vixens??? :)

  9. Alyssa says:

I think you should all be the pink ladies, you know, from Grease. That would be great!

  10. You should dress up as the characters from the Simpsons! Too funny:)

  11. jpscraps says:

Paper crafted items (scrapbook page, cards, etc..), Super Heroes, Rock Band, crayons, zoo animals, video game characters, TV shows, Disney princesses.

  12. How about a Masquerade ball? -with Old prom dresses and pretty masks?

    OR

Instead of Go-To Gals you could be Go-Go Girls

    OR

Nifty Fifties (I know it’s been done but it’s still fun, poodle skirts and all)

    OR

Alice In Wonderland (Alice, Mad Hatter, Queen of HEarts, Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum, The flowers with faces) So many possibilities with this one and a VERY Popular theme considering the upcoming movie

Personally I’d go with Alice in Wonderland (trust me I work for a Halloween shop, that and I love Alice)

Then there is the old stand by Pirate theme which is always popular every year.

Have fun guys and Happy Halloween!

  13. Sandra says:

no great ideas here – I prefer to be a spectator for Halloween!
    Thanks for the fun!
    Sandra

  14. Christine Rogus says:

Have you ever seen the movie Ratatouille? I think it would be great to have you ladies dress up in chef clothes and hats, and glue rats on the side of your head, hat, or coming up your apron. This is my favorite holiday and I love that you guys love it.

  15. Lori R says:

I prefer being a spectator of Halloween too…..but what about dressing up as a wedding party……you could go to an oulet store and find matching bridesmade dresses.

  16. Jamie Greene says:

Well I was going to suggest snow white and the 7 dwarfs ( with Matt as snow white of course) but I can see it has already been suggested! So mabee you should all be superheros and have Matt be the villan!

  17. betty lou says:

I planned on suggesting Snow White, also……..SO how about

Matt as Princess Leia (or Queen Amidala)

and the ladies as Luke, Han, Obi-Wan, Anakin/Darth Vader, Yoda, other Jedi Masters, C3P0, R2D2, etc.???????????

  18. Ms. Aaron B says:

Once in college all of my friends and I dressed as Black-eyed Peas. White T-shirts with a big “P” on them and painted on Black eyes.
The next year we went as Rodeo Clowns and a Bull (I guess Matt could be the Bull)
Whatever you go as, be safe and have fun!

  19. Veronica B. says:

how about a priest and a bunch of nuns!

  20. Ha, ha!! What fun! How about the Brady Bunch?

  21. Hmmm…I was so thinking the priest and nun thing but someone beat me to it. So, how about a Nascar pit crew and a “hot” blonde to present the trophy in the winners circle…and Matt could dress in drag!

  22. Marta Fosco says:

As I was reading I have to say the first thing that popped into my mind was Snow White and the 7 dwarfs (or little people? in PC parlance). Maybe too obvious??? What ever you decide on, I’m sure it’ll be fun. I received my copy of the Nov/Dec issue and I’m loving it! Thank you!

  23. Elaine says:

the Peanuts Gang! Snoopy, Charlie Brown, Lucy, Linus, and Sally, Peppermint Patty, Woodstock, etc!

  24. Anita Young says:

Love the hippies from last year!! :) How about retro ’60′s like the cast of Madmen? I think you would all look amazing!!

  25. Rhonda Miller says:

How about the Wizard of oz with Matt as Dorothy. I love Halloween. So many possibilities.

  26. Bernice says:

How about characters from the board game Clue?

  27. Tanya Rudd says:

Dress up as Pirates, they are the latest craze here in Ottawa, we even have a pirate ship that sails out of Mooney’s Bay. There is treasure to be found and pirate ships to battle.

  28. Lindzie H says:

Could you all be different types of roadsigns? Like a stop sign or a yield sign?

  29. Jen Barkdull says:

Love the new cover! Kim Hughes is a favorite!! Also, I was able to renew my sub at CKC – double wahoo!!! As for costumes, how about scrapping super heros? Holy Glue Dots Batman! :)

  30. Darlene L says:

If you like a group idea–here is what my staff and I did one year. We went as the Rock Band–Smashed Pumpkins (a play on the group Smashing Pumpkins). We all dressed up as a pumpkins, sort of making our costumes just a little off to be smashed and carried guitars, a drum, etc. We had so much fun and won several prizes. We played their music too!

The second year we went as the YMCA song group–you know the Indian, the cop, etc–another great time and again won the top prize!

Whatever you decide to do, please share your photos!

  31. how about something along the lines of toy story or like a butterfly fairy theme.

  32. Mel says:

How about Crayons…you girls could be the colors, and Matt could be the box, or a piece of paper/coloring sheet to color. Easy, fun and you can dress as your favorite color! We did it in our office, and it was a blast.

  33. Lillian Child says:

How about a going as a turkey? The man can be the face/body of the turkey, and each of the gals can be a different colored “wing” … or using the same idea only doing a huge daisy, with the man being the center of the flower and each of the gals being a “petal”. Whatever you decide upon I’m sure you will have a spooktacular halloween! ENJOY!

  34. SMK says:

Pirates of the Caribbean would be a super fun theme :D

  35. Bobbi-Lynn says:

I love themed dress up costumes for a group! This year my 5 kiddies are going to be dressed up in Star Wars costumes – yes, even the girls LOL
Crayons is a cool idea – I did that one year and it was super easy! Buy the party hat that is your ‘colour’ for the tip of the crayon, get a pillow case that is also your colour, then out of felt cut the words crayola and hot glue it onto the pillow case. Super easy and cute!

  36. carol H says:

How about the California raisins and Matt could be the head raisin with the Sunglasses that tells you when to flip? Raisin costumes would be easily done with trash bags.

  37. I think you all should be paper princesses complete with tiara’s and your dresses made from paper of course! Now that would be some fun sewing projects, or even just tied together with ribbon.

  38. sara says:

I gravitate towards copying!! I love the clean and simple styles but honestly, when I something catches my eye I tend to replicate whatever it is. It seems I rarely come up with my own layouts which has lead to my blog browsing addiction!! Thanks for all of the wonderful ideas : )

  39. Carol Metully says:

How about the gals being cats..black cats, of course!! Matt can be the mouse!! Kind of mix of Halloween (black cats) and CHristmas..(not a mouse was stirring)…hence forth you get “Hallowistmas” !!!!!!!

I love the new look…and great cards, of course!

  40. I think Donna’s nailed it! Snow/Matt White and the 7 dwarfs.
This idea wouldn’t be for costumes, but something ya’ll can do when you’re traveling together. All the girls wear shirts that say, “I love Matt” and Matt wears a shirt that sats, “It’s good to be Matt.” I saw this (except they loved Bob) on several sweet old ladies at Disney World. Later, I saw Bob. He was the only man traveling with this huge group of ladies. So cute!!

  41. I think the Wizard of Oz would be a great group costume! Especially if someone was crazy enough to actually use the green face paint like the witch! Or if not that group, maybe the Fifth Dimension!

  42. Janet B says:

All of us at work are dressing up like Dr Suess characters. I’m Horton. lol We’re also bringing Dr Suess related treats to the party–blue fish, dog biscuit shaped cookies–not sure what Horton’s bringing yet.
Last year the office dressed like they would look 20 years in the future. It was great!

  43. Ramona West says:

Barbie Dolls That Never Made it to the Shelves
Trailer Park Barbie, Computer Geek Ken, Britney Spears Barbie, Punk Rock Barbie, Shaved My Head Barbie, Crazy Gone Nuts Barbie, House Wife Barbie, Simpson’s Barbie, Over the Age of 25 Barbie, Lawn & Garden Barbie, Bad Hair Day Barbie, Bald Over the Hill Ken, Business Suit Ken, Bad Breathe Barbie, Pleasantly Plump Barbie, Second Hand Shopper Barbie, on & on

  44. Janet says:

I met my husband at a Halloween party 26 years ago when I went as a red m&m along with my girlfriends (we were each a different color) and my brother-in-law went as the package for the m&m’s!

  45. Jessica B says:

How about the Old Woman in the Shoe? Matt could be the old woman and the rest of you could be the children. (if you don’t know what I’m talking about it’s a nursery rhyme…there was an old woman who lived in a shoe, had so many children she didn’t know what to do)
Keeping with that same theme of nursery rhymes–Matt could be Little Bo Peep and the rest of you could be his sheep

  46. Heather Garl says:

Hope about snow white and the seven dwarfs….OR….roman theme complete with toga’s….OR….dress like your favorite movie character

Can’t wait to see what you decide!

  47. Toni Storie says:

OH MY! You are all too funny! What about a bunch of spitting and scratching baseball players!

  48. my first thought was super heroes. because that is what all of you are to me!! :) gotta have my PC every month!!!

  49. Wow! You’ve received a lot of good ideas already. Hmmmm….trying to think of something unique. How about each person dresses up to represent one of the themes from your 2009 issues/special issues? Or, how about a witch (Matt) and her black cats? Or, maybe a Hawaiian theme would be fun!! (Guess I’ve got Hawaii on the brain because my husband and I are heading there next month!!)

  50. cjs says:

My brother & his family were the Flintstones last year – they were too cute! You say you have seven people? You could do Fred, Wilma, Pebbles, Barney, Betty, Bam-Bam…and Dino! Have fun!
