Melinda Dann

Hello again, it’s your lovable design intern! And Happy Button Day!

Back to blogging! I can’t say I’m hooked, but it’s pretty fun. (And not quite as scary the second time around!)

When I was told that today was Button Day, it raised a lot of questions. What is Button Day? What kind of buttons are they talking about? Are they metaphorical? Is it a day for pushing people’s buttons? What about flair? My Facebook flair collection is fairly large…perhaps the day should be celebrated by doubling it? (Sadly, Wikipedia is of no use in this case. Whatever shall I do?)

And why are we celebrating buttons? It’s not that buttons aren’t useful or fun, but do they need a whole day to celebrate? What about Zipper Day? Snap Day? I’m just saying…maybe there are other things we could have celebrations for. It’ll catch on, right?

Of course, there is definitely a lot to be said for buttons in paper crafting. I have seen so many cards with buttons made into balloons, flowers and birds. There are really cute ideas that I would never have thought of before, and some of them even incorporate the design on the button into the new design. Too cute! Just like Former Paper Crafts Pro Alisa Bangerter’s Birthday Buttons Card from our new resource book A Card a DayI would love to receive a card like this for my birthday!

Okay, maybe I’m starting to see the need for Button Day. (For more button inspiration, click HERE to see how our 2009 Gallery Idol finalists incorporated buttons into their card designs. Pretty amazing, huh?) I bet you’re saying you could really use some buttons about now. Your wish is my command! Leave a comment telling me why you love buttons so much and I’ll pick one winner to win this assortment of colorful buttons from American Crafts! All comments must be received by midnight (MDT) on Tuesday, Nov. 17.

I think we all grew up with tins, or glass jars, filled with buttons. At least those of us over 20 yrs.!! (no offense!!) My grandmother’s button tin was handed to my Mom and then to me. While there are some real winners in there, they are mostly white, brown, black, or blue! Even those I use!! But I love all the pretty ones! I put them on cards, on layouts, on tags, and every once in while, I put one on a shirt! This would be a fun giveaway to win!!!!

  26. carol h says:

  30. maryD says:

Button Button Who’s got the Button was a fun game we played during a rainy day when I was young. We used buttons for bingo too. I love the way buutons sound when they move around in a jar. I love to put buutons by color in jars to brighten up my craft space. My favorite way to use them is to put them in the center of a flower. Hooray for Happy Button Day!

  31. Bernice J says:

I am so attracted to buttons…I think it must be the multitude of beautiful colours you can find them in. I use my buttons for both cards and scrapbooks, especially as borders. And I get a lot of pleasure from getting buttons from all kinds of people who know I use them a lot.

  32. Love the card with all the buttons – they make it really fun!

  36. Barbara M says:

I am hooked on buttons! I love polka dots so you can put a button dot on almost anything. So I am seeing those glitter buttons yummy!! So much fun!!

  37. Shelly says:

My love of buttons started when I was a child. My grandmother always used to have a huge box of buttons that I would play with. I would sort them constantly. They were so simple and so much fun. Now every time I see a box/bag/bunch of them, I just have to run my fingers through them. It’s great to be able to put that love of buttons into my pages and cards.

  38. Kim Marie says:

Buttons make me very very very happy. They just do. They are multicultural, textural, come in all shapes and sizes with different patterns and purposes and boxes and jars of them thrill my inner child. They make cool sounds when played in and keep my attention for hours. Who doesn’t love them?
    Kim Marie

  39. Jen Madsen says:

Buttons make me think of the collection my grandma used to keep in her sewing box. So cool to play with.

  40. Brenda L. says:

I love buttons because they come in so many colors, sizes, and designs. I especially like to use this on boy’s or masculine cards, because buttons can be unisex, unlike flowers.

  41. Cheri Howard says:

I think I love buttons so much because you can have an infinite amount of variety in such a tiny little space. I remember my granny had a huge jar of buttons she had collected over the years – some found, some salvaged from worn out clothing, others picked up at garage sales. I used to love just looking at all the buttons in that jar!

  42. Elaine says:

ooooooooo!!! I love buttons! I have two reasons why:

    1) When my daughter was little (a year or two) I had a huge old tin full of buttons and she would run her little baby hands through, picking up the buttons and letting them fall, just enjoying the colors, the feel, and the sound! It made me smile just to watch her be so content with buttons!

    2) My grandma used to stash buttons in her sewing ottoman thingie. I never even knew that it opened up for storage until I was in my teens. When she showed me, I was smiling from ear to ear and they always remind me of her now!

Both are emotional ties – but strong ones at that!

  43. ivy says:

i love to use buttons on my projects to add some “cuteness” (i have 2 little boys). i love the demension it adds.

  44. Lynette C says:

I love button because they are cute, available in so many color, easy to add demension to a page.

  45. Emily says:

I love buttons because you can use them on anything! Cards, layouts, any theme! Any time you need a little added touch, buttons can do the trick! Stamp on them, paper them, glitter them, emboss them, tie embroidery thread through them, or leave them just the way they are!

  46. Tanja S says:

I love buttons because they add so much texture and dimension to a page. My fave spot to put them is as a flower centre or overlapping a ribbon.
Thanks for the chance to win that gorgeous selection !

  47. Debbie says:

Oh, I would love some buttons. I have had to put them on my Christmas list, so to win them would mean more room on my list for other great craft supplies. LOL Thanks for the chance to win!

  48. Pat S. says:

I love buttons because they remind me of my grandmother’s sewing box. She taught me how to sew and buttons were always one of my favorite trims. Thanks for a chance to win!

  49. Eva says:

I really don’t know that buttons can be used to beautify papers until I started do scrapbooking. I have lots of spared buttons attached to clothes and I’ve been keeping them for such a long while. I had no clue what to do with them, but now I can use all of them to enhance my layouts…and they come with different colors, shapes…Love it!

  50. Tanya says:

When I am crafting using buttons, I find that it takes a little extra (stitching, glue dot, ribbon) to make a button become a part of the project but that little extra makes the project feel extra special. That’s why I love buttons!!
