Freebie Friday – Luck of the Irish

Freebie Friday Luck of the Irish

P. Kelly Smith

Welcome to Freebie Friday! Did everyone enjoy “meeting” little Cooper yesterday? Isn’t he a sweetheart? I must say, spring is definitely the season for babies…at least in my world right now!

My cousin and his wife welcomed their baby boy Nixon Bradley five days after Cooper was born. And my girlfriend Ann is due any day now with her first boy. I was hoping he would come on my birthday earlier this week, but the little guy is being stubborn and holding out for a cooler day. Maybe he’ll come on St. Patrick’s Day, just like my sister did 31 years ago!

With babies and birthdays clearly occupying my mind, I thought I would look up the origin and meaning of my own name. Even though I’m not of direct Irish descent, I know that the name “Kelly” is in fact Irish. According to BabyNamesWorld.com, my name means “war, strife, bright-headed”. One out of three adjectives ain’t bad, unless, of course, “bright-headed” refers to the color of my head and not what’s inside it! Sigh. I was really holding out for “warrior princess”…

Fortunately, the luck of the Irish was all over our resource book A Card a Day! For those of you of not familiar with this publication, essentially it’s a book with 365 card ideas – one for each day of the year. Doesn’t that sound like fun?

My name means nothing since my mom chose to spell it a unique way :) I think the original Lindsay name is derived from “the Linden trees.” Never thought that was very exciting. Darla

  24. Chris R. from Iowa says:

Christine is “follower of Christ” but there is a funny story behind my name. My mom, always a kidder – knew I was going to be a C-section baby and chose to have me on 3/17. Seeing that there are red heads in our family and she chose that day, he figured my name would have to be Irish so he was starting to prepare the birth certificate. The doctor’s name, by the way, was Dr. Aide! Anyway, before she went under the anesthesia – Dr. Aide asked her what Patricia’s middle name would be. Mom looked at him and said no – her name will be Christine – Patricia is “too pat” of a name for the day. Of course everyone was laughing about the pun of “too pat of an answer.” So, when she woke up he asked her how did she come up with that name and she told him about this sort of homeless bag lady in our neighborhood and how she used to put out food for her as she would never come in when mom would invite her. That lady’s name was Christine my mom found out and decided that would be my name and I would always have a friend to help me out. Mom’s name was Marjorie and that meant Pearl and I guess she was just a gem of a pearl of wisdom! I don’t know but I sure miss her and my dad. Now, that I am sort of sad, I will find my shamrock bracelet my dad bought for me a zillion years ago so I have it ready to wear on Wednesday. Thanks for letting me spill my guts here!

    Chris

I was named after my mom’s sister.
    And according to that site:
Diana is derived from either an Indo-European root meaning “divine,” or from the Latin “diviana,” though neither theory is particularly well-sourced.
Diana was the Roman goddess of the moon who eventually took on the huntress identity of the Greek goddess Artemis. Diana was a patron of virgins, forests, and hunters.
