Freebie Friday – Luck of the Irish

Freebie Friday Luck of the Irish

P. Kelly Smith

Welcome to Freebie Friday! Did everyone enjoy “meeting” little Cooper yesterday? Isn’t he a sweetheart? I must say, spring is definitely the season for babies…at least in my world right now!

My cousin and his wife welcomed their baby boy Nixon Bradley five days after Cooper was born. And my girlfriend Ann is due any day now with her first boy. I was hoping he would come on my birthday earlier this week, but the little guy is being stubborn and holding out for a cooler day. Maybe he’ll come on St. Patrick’s Day, just like my sister did 31 years ago!

With babies and birthdays clearly occupying my mind, I thought I would look up the origin and meaning of my own name. Even though I’m not of direct Irish descent, I know that the name “Kelly” is in fact Irish. According to BabyNamesWorld.com, my name means “war, strife, bright-headed”. One out of three adjectives ain’t bad, unless, of course, “bright-headed” refers to the color of my head and not what’s inside it! Sigh. I was really holding out for “warrior princess”…

Fortunately, the luck of the Irish was all over our resource book A Card a Day! For those of you of not familiar with this publication, essentially it’s a book with 365 card ideas – one for each day of the year. Doesn’t that sound like fun?

My name is Welsh and it means “fair” which is true for me! I live in San Francisco and my family (from a much sunnier clime) always call my husband and I “people of the fog.”

  2. Elaine says:

  3. chekai says:

i was named after a family friend who’s birthday is the same as mine.

  4. Brooke says:

Brooke means “a brook, stream” and is of English origin. My Mum knew before I was born that if I was girl my name would be Brooke. Makes me feel so special.

  5. Vianna says:

The site says VIANNA is of Latin origins and means “alive” – I should hope I am alive because if I’m writing this dead, I am a zombie. Anyway, my father named me after Vivianne Leigh, with whom he shared a birthdate, and who was is movie idol. It’s not a common named spelled in this manner.

  6. Lara Mosby says:

I read once that my name, Lara, means “well known” in Latin. But the REALl origin of my name is that my mother loved the film “Dr. Zhivago” and named me after the Lara in that movie.

  7. Mary Schmidt says:

Mary- as old as the Bible. I was named after my maternal grandmother. Everywhere I go, there are always other Marys; school, work, neighborhoods. I grew up using my first & middle name to differentiate me from other Marys. Now I use first & last name & my last name is very common also. I want to be ME!

  8. Denise M. says:

Denise is the Goddess of Wine….very appropriate cause i do love my wine! Great giveaway!

  9. My name – Candace – according to that site, is of Greek origin and means fire-white. Beautiful cards!

  10. Anne B. says:

    Hebrew – Grace. :)

  11. cards4ever says:

My name Mandi is from Latin which means she who must be loved.

  12. janelle_d says:

So, I went to the recommended site… & learned that my name is Hebrew in origin & means ‘god is gracious’. My mom wanted to name her kids ‘different’ names… & I haven’t met too many other people named Janelle & I haven’t met anyone with my sister’s name, Karlyn.
    Thanks for another great giveaway!

  13. Robin H says:

My name, Robin, means bright fame. It is German in origin.

  15. Bernice says:

The origin of my name is Greek and it means “victory bringer”! Pretty neat site!

  16. Teresa says:

The exact meaning of Teresa is unknown, but it is likely to be from either the Greek word meaning “to harvest”, the Greek word meaning “summer”, or from the Greek island of Thera.

I love my name! Lucky me!

  17. kristy c. says:

my name kristine has a latin/french origin to mean follower of christ

  18. Cindy d says:

Cynthia is Greek and means “of the moon.” Thanks for the chance to win!

  19. Melisa Hunter says:

The origin of my name is Greek — for honey bee. Thanks for the chance to win!

  21. Barbara says:

My name is of Greek origin and means foreign or strange. How fitting for me….

  22. Lauri Buck says:

My parents called me Beth, which comes from Hebrew and means “My God is a Vow”. But they named me LauriBeth because my grandmother was Laura Elizabeth. Lauri is Latin or French meaning Man from Laurenten, but Laura means Laurel. I now go by Lauri because I liked the sound better. I made the switch in 8th grade when I moved from Illinois to Missouri.

  23. Lesley Stewart says:

The origin on my name is Gaelic and means “holly garden.” I’m not quite sure what that means, but I guess it could be that it’s a pretty place to be, but watch out cause there are prickers and you might get stuck. I admit that I have a lot of patience, but can lose it in a snap and then, watch out! I think that’s also part of my Cancerian nature. Thanks for reading my comment!

  24. cjs says:

My last name has a Scottish origin…meaning ‘sweet child’.

  26. Lisa Padley says:

Depending on which site I visit, the meaning of my name is different. They all have a version of the same theme though … God.

On babyhold.com it is Oath of God, on the site you listed it’s My God is a vow.

What’s funny is that my mom said she picked my name because she didn’t know anyone who had a girl with my name. Then a friend of hers had a baby a few months before me and named her Lisa! LOL

When I was looking just now at the site you provided, it was the #1 name for a girl the year I was born! hehehehehe Poor mom!

  27. You raise a very thought provoking point. I hadn’t looked at it that way before. Interesting article!
