P. Kelly Smith

Welcome to Freebie Friday and the first week of summer! Give me a swimming pool, flip-flops and an ice-cold Coke and I’m a happy girl! I also love fresh fruit…especially the kind you find at a roadside stall in the summertime. Hmm…I suddenly have a craving for ripe strawberries and peaches! More on that later!

Can you believe we’re winding down our Gallery Idol 2010 competition? I want to commend our Top 10 finalists for really stretching their imaginations and thinking outside the box with this week’s theme. Who knew you could do so many creative things with ribbon? Truly amazing ribbon cards, ladies! Sadly, we must bid farewell to half of you, but five of you have made it to the fourth and final round. And you are (in alphabetical order):

Top 5, are you ready for your final theme? Round 4’s theme is…Inspired By! If you’ve seen this column in our magazine, you know we devote the entire last page to an inspiring image and project. In honor of summer, we thought it would be fun for our five remaining finalists to design a card using the SAME image as inspiration! So here’s your Gallery Idol 2010 Inspired By image:

  3. Angela E says:

My favorite part of summer is the heat. I absolutely hate to be cold (I just want to curl up & sleep when it’s cold) so as soon as the temps start to rise, I’m ready to join the outside world. The sunshine brings out tropical colors which always inspire me to create new color combinations in my paper crafts & jewelry.

  4. Storms are inspiring. . . get indoors, listen and watch Mother Nature at work, and pull out your paper and ink!

  5. Joy Briggs says:

Summer for me means flowers and brilliant colors! I absolutely LOVE big, bright flowers and that’s reflected in my cards :)

  6. Kim says:

Summer inspires me because I am more relaxed. Kids are out of school so I have less stress and running around to do and more time to do what I love—scrapbooking and stamping. The summer colors also inspire me.

  7. Cathy says:

The beautiful colors and flowers of summer are great inspirations.

  8. Joy Hadden says:

What inspires me are the bright colors, red in geraniums, yellow sun, green grass and blue, blue skies! Thanks for the opportunity to win!

  9. Linda E says:

Congrats to all of the ladies. The judging must have been tough because this week’s cards were all fantastic! What inspires me most about summer is the extra time I have to be creative.

  10. pam bray says:

Love summertime, Swimming, BBQ, parades, fireworks oh my. All the glorious colors of summertime, oranges, yellows, blues, and reds. Photography at its best.

  11. Janet says:

Summertime inspires me with the feeling of space and light – the blues skies, warm days, bright colours of flowers and butterflies. What a wonderful giveaway!

  12. Alice Leonard says:

Great colors, make the creative juices flow.

  13. Alice Leonard says:

I love the summer flowers, butterflys, birds, all the great colors and movement.

  14. Cathy says:

Those ribbon cards are outstanding!! Can’t wait to see their “inspired by” cards!
I’m inspired to create in summer in part because of the freedom and time I have in summer being off work (I work in a school) and in part because of the sun! I love that the days are significantly “longer” in summer – the sun is up when I get up and it’s still up when I’m getting ready for bed. I don’t feel the pressure of trying to fit everything into a day in summer like I do in fall or winter when work and shorter days zap my time. Summer is relaxed and freeing and somehow the creativity comes easier too :)

  15. justbusyscrappin says:

How does summer inspire me? Summertime is when I am not working and able to just sit and relax and listen to the thoughts in my head. My brain is always working but during the summer my life slows down and I am able to focus on the creative ideas and inspirations that I have tucked away during the year. I am also able to just listen to the world around me and find new creativity in those moments of being still and just listening!

  16. Sarah H. says:

I’m drawn to the bright, happy colors of summer especially whatever colors are in my daughter’s swimsuit!

  17. Erica says:

Summer inspires me to let loose and have fun with my family!! We can go to the pool, the lake or head to the beach. There is so much to do outside!!

  18. CoreyW says:

congrats to the top 5 – what amazing, out of the box creations!!!

Summer – it inspires me to play with color. I tend to have my favorites in clothing & scrapping – but when summer comes, even though i’m not a fan of heat and prefer fall any day, I tend to get out of my “safe” zone and get creative and brave with color. So fun!

  19. Victoria S. says:

Congrats to the winners! I love the bright fun cheery colors of summer!

  20. erin says:

Congrats to all the players- amazing cards. I think I missed the deadline on the freebie question, but considering I’m not currently in the n. hemisphere I’m in awe of all these summer themes. I’ll go skiing and think of you guys lounging by the pool.

  21. I love summer because it’s the season where we can enjoy the beach. Anyway, those cards are really adorable and cute. I actually love to use ribbons on everything, especially on making hair accessories. =)

  22. Congrats to all of the finalists – what amazing cards!! I love summer because I can listen to my SF Giants while I craft and the hours just fly by! I love that I have natural light later in the evenings and I love that I feel the warm breezes coming through the windows.

  23. Alice Leonard says:

Summer is almost my best inspiration, right next to Fall. I love the bright colors, flowers, bugs, hot summer sun (really hot I live in the desert), so much to do, so much to see, good food, good friends – what more can you ask for?
