Raise your hand if you’re a card maker.

Raise your other hand if you’re a scrapbooker.

Raise your knee if you consider yourself to be both.

Raise your other knee if you know that, no matter what side of the bread you butter, we can all be inspired by one another.

That’s the gist of our awesome “Designer Challenge: Layouts Inspired by Cards” feature in the July/August issue of Paper Crafts magazine. We got together with our sister publication, Creating Keepsakes, and put together a double feature.

While our designers were inspired to make cards based off of stellar layouts created by the Creating Keepsakes Dream Team, their Dream Team was inspired to make layouts based on some amazing cards that our designers whipped up for them. Check it:

From the Paper Crafts feature on page 59, look how Dream Teamer Deena Wuest was inspired by Go-to Gal Kim Kesti’s card:

Deena says, “I was immediately drawn to Kim’s use of rhinestones. They add such great dimension to her card. I used the overall design as a jumping-off point for my layout. Instead of waves, I hand-cut flames. I also loved the color-blocked strips on the card and the fresh look of white text on a blue background.”

And on page 64, look at the amazing way that Dream Teamer Suzy Plantamura was inspired by Go-to Gal Betsy Veldman’s card:

Suzy says, “Red, blue, and white are some of my favorite colors to use together. I also liked the scalloped edges of the card and used them around the edge of my page. The buttons and flowers were cute, so I added lots of both to my layout. And stitching gives it that homemade look to match the card.”

How did our designers take it the other direction? Here is a layout published on page 76 of the feature appearing in Creating Keepsakes. Click here to see the inspiring card that Susan Weinroth made.

You know my mantra—inspiration is absolutely everywhere—and sometimes it’s staring us directly in the face. Surrounded by cards? Create a layout inspired by the sketch, the product, the sentiment, the color palette, the texture, or whatever is grabbing your attention at the time. Surrounded by layouts? Same goes for cards except that you can also incorporate the leftover scraps, the theme, and/or the journaling.

Wanna give this a try yourself? Hop on over to both the Moxie Fab World where you can enter a challenge to create a card inspired by a layout and then go on over to Club CK where you can create a layout inspired by a card.

For no matter what your preference—card, layout, or both—there’s inspiration to be offered one to another to the next.

Are you a card maker? Are you a scrapbooker? Do you dabble in both? I’d love to hear what you enjoy about these sister crafts and/or what you found to be inspiring in today’s post. And to thank you for your contribution to the discussion, I’ll draw three random winners to receive a copy of both of these inspiring magazines! All comments must be received by midnight (MDT) on Friday, July 2.

Loving this double feature,
Cath

I do both and love every minute! I love that the supplies and tools I own can be used for both hobbies. I can spend hours on a layout but when I want to do something a bit quicker, I can make a card and get the same satisfaction!

  2. Leslie says:

I had to smile when I read that someone could spend HOURS on a scrapbook layout, but when wanting to do something “quicker” she makes cards! hehe, I spend HOURS on cards! I dabble here and there with this and that to make sure every embellie, ribbon, sentiment are PERFECT! =)

  3. Christine N says:

    Beautiful layouts and cards!

    Blessings,

I am both- although I’ve had the same 2 pages that I’ve been working on for months! (Not because they are awesome either!) I think cardmaking is a little easier for me because, while I HOPE people will keep the cards I make & give them, I don’t think of them as a future heirloom! :D
I would be SOOOOOO excited to win these- I NEED me some inspiriation! ;) Thanks for the chance!

  5. Tejal says:

I am mostly a card maker sometimes dabbling in scrapbooking. I only make scrapbooking pages for friends on requests.

    But both are amazing processes..

  6. Amy says:

I love scrapbooking because it will tell our family’s stories for years to come, but I like making cards, because of it’s slightly different creative feel, and I love to send/give someone a handmade card…a little more personal.
I really enjoyed this issue, and this article of gaining inspiration from “the other papercraft”.

  7. Chloe says:

This is a really clever idea and something I should try more often. The design process takes the longest for me when I create so for one project to inspire another would be a huge timesaver! Thanks for the inspiration PC and CK!

  8. Francine says:

I am both a scrapbooker and a cardmaker. I love both because they are creative outlets and it’s a lot more fun to make a card than to stand in a store looking for one. lol I use a piece of advice a friend shared with me–after making a layout, make a card before cleaning up. It cuts down on scraps, the scraps already coordinated, and you’ll have a card in your stash that you can use when you’re crunched for time.

  9. Chrissie T says:

I love the color combos of the flames and waves. I’m going to scrap lift that idea for sure!!! TFS!

  10. Tammy H says:

I just love the color combinations! I long to do scrapbook layouts, but feel overwhelmed about how to do them, and I stick to cards. I feel my son who is now 4 is cheated by this! I have bought and hoarded supplies to start and yet have not sit down to start, so it’s been cards for me.

    thanks for sharing!
    Tammy

  11. I love being able to use the same supplies for both crafts. It’s like getting a 2-for-1 deal with everything I buy! And I love having supplies handy to make a gift at short notice!

  12. I’m a Three-fer, I do cards, layouts and mini books. The colors are inspiring for me in a couple of the projects. I love the bright/light blues, reds, yellows and the whites, very Retro feel to me. Thanks for sharing and good luck to all!

  13. cards4ever says:

I would say I am both. I love how the cards make memories and scrapbooks captures the memories.

  14. Rap says:

I started as a scrapper but I guess I make cards now since I haven’t actually done a page in over a year. I still consider myself a scrapper first though.
