Groovin’ with the Go-to Gals – Focus on Style

Kim Hughes

I was downright giddy when asked to create four cards in four different styles for the Focus on Style section of Card Style. I knew that it would be a challenge, but I so enjoyed the process!

I started with a color combination that I could see used in each style. Then I pulled out all of my products that contained those colors. I chose specific colors so that I wasn’t overwhelmed with my choices. Among those products, I made a pile for each style.

  • Fun & Cute: polka dots, gingham, buttons and scallops
  • Clean & Graphic: papers with small patterns, black paint
  • Classy & Elegant: silk ribbon, pretty flowers and bling
  • Shabby & Vintage: lace, my paper distresser, white paint, pearls and pins

I kept each style in mind when I chose my fonts as well. Once I decided on a card design, it was time to put all of the pieces together that made each style unique. What a blast!

Are you drawn to fun & cute cards that just make you smile? Do you prefer the clean & graphic style that looks so easy to reproduce? I adore both of these styles, and they are the two that I tend to gravitate towards when I sit down to create.

When I brainstormed the fun & cute card (p. 143), clouds and sunshine came to mind because they just make me smile. So, I chose playful patterns and added dimension to the sun with fun buttons. I chose a font that I felt fit the style perfectly.

The clean & graphic card (also p. 143) was a bit of a challenge because I had to keep myself from adding more embellishments. But I kept in mind that it needed to be a simple card that still had an element of style.

  1. Vera Yates says:

Shabby chic/vintage definitely most challenging for me. When I try it, my card felt like its cluttered.

  2. Christine says:

I love the simplicity of this card…I am making thank you cards for my daughter’s first bday and this are simple enough to make in mass! Great card :)

  3. Janet S says:

It is not so much a style that is hard for me, but my biggest challenge is doing lots of layers. I am just not a multiple layer cardmaker. I mail my cards mostly so I tend to keep them fairly unbulky.

  4. Gwen says:

Shabby and vintage over the top is hard for me. I am liking clean and simple and elegant more and more.

  5. Holly H says:

Shabby and vintage is the hardest style for me. I am not into Shabby Chic and don’t really know anyone who is. I find clean, geometric cards work the best across most people.

  6. Jessica Reyes says:

the hardest style for me is the vintage & shabby look. I absolutely love seeing cards made like that, but personally can’t make a good one! oh well, as they say, variety is the spice of life! good thing there are many styles to choose from & make you happy!

  7. tricia Dee says:

I love Shabby Chic and Vintage, but it’s definitely the most challenging for me!

  8. Helen F. says:

I love everything about your ‘fun & cute’ card. It just makes me smile :)
Can you really go wrong with polka dots, gingham and buttons, evahhh?

  9. Jennifer V. says:

I love the shabby chic and vintage card. I find my self looking for vintage looking paper whenever i go shopping. Always reminds me of my grandmas house growing up.

  10. Katie M says:

Clean and graphic is hard for me – I keep wanting to add more pieces!

  11. DeniseB says:

Shabby is most challenging for me, but I love the look!

  12. Sandi says:

Shabby chic and vintage are hard because it’s hard to know when enough is enough, etc.

  13. Su C. says:

I find that the Shabby chic/vintage is the most challenging for me. I enjoy the look, but can’t get mine to look the way I want. I like to make elegant or clean and simple cards.

  14. Donna says:

I LOVE clean and graphic and classy and elegant. It took me a while to realize that they were my styles When it clicked I didn’t want to do anything but make cards. I stood at the mail bin after placing my cards in it and it felt like when I watched my children board the school bus their very first day.

  15. Vickie says:

vintage or shabby are the hardest for me. I am much more comfortable with fun and cute.

  16. Angie says:

I love fun and cute cards! The shabby vintage look is definitely the most difficult for me. Although my friend who introduced me to card making really goes for that look. Now that I understand the different styles I think I will be a lot freer to produce my own cards instead of getting frustrated trying to make them like hers. Thanks

  17. karen says:

WOW, page 143 of this magazine is really good.
I would LOVE to see a whole issue done in that format!
    Very inspiring!
