I’m really digging spray mists right now. Here’s why: They’re just plain fun to play with. You can do so much with them: mask with them; change the colors of paper flowers and ribbon; and create all kinds of fun backgrounds.
Betsy Veldman and I played with spray mists for the Dear Go-to-Gals column in the September/October issue of Paper Crafts magazine. (Click HERE to see Betsy’s Fall Masked & Misted Card and my Tie-Dyed Thanks Card.)
And I’m excited to share with you today one of my favorite techniques: the tie-dye misting technique.
To pull off this fun technique, you’re going to need:
- A can of compressed air. I found mine at the office supply store in the computer supply aisle.
- A few bottles of spray mist
- Watercolor paper
And here’s what you do:

1. Spray several puddles of mist on a piece of watercolor paper. Be sure to spray close to the paper so you end up with nickel to quarter-sized puddles.

2. Shoot air from a can of compressed air directly into the puddles. Move the nozzle around to spread the mists and cause splotchy marks.

3. Allow the mists to soak into the paper and fully dry. Patience is key here. This could take minutes or up to an hour.
The end result is a super cool background, like what you see here in my Hello Tie-Dye Card:

What I love about this technique is no matter how many times you try it and no matter what colors you use, you end up with a different look every time.
Feeling adventurous and want to try the tie-dye misting technique at home?

‘Til we get to play again,

P.S. Wondering how this technique would work with reinkers? Hit my blog today to see how, as well as view another project.

Just ran out of compressed air – wasted the stuff doing something frivolous like CLEANING MY COMPUTER!
I do love my glimmer mists and finding new ways to use them is right up my alley! Thanks for the tip!
What an awesome technique! I bought stuff to tie dye t-shirts for a kids party years ago and this would have made the best invitations. I still have lots left…
Oh my, this is a wonderful technique. I wish I had such a cleaver mind. I defintely will try this. This would be great to use on canvas, also.
So fun and easy! My son would love doing this with me.
Well, isn’t this just the coolest technique! I actually have all the items so am going to give it a try! Thanks for sharing!!
Teri…very cool projects! I’ll need to get some mists on my next trip to a big city…living in a small town has some drawbacks,….but it keeps me very excited when I see projects like yours! Wish I had some pinks for my daughters pinkalicious bday tomorrow!!! Oh the possibilities! Thanks for sharing!
How do you think of such cool stuff?!!
My grandkids would love this!
Would love to play with these! Looks like fun!

Wow the technique is really effective
VERY cool technique! I wish I had your imagination! Thanks for the tutorial!
Oh this looks fun! I am going to have to get a can of air and start playing.
What a great idea! I will never look at a can of air the same way again!
One of the best ideas I’ve seen!
It’s like a grownup version of “blo-pens”!!! I’ve gotta try it!
that is SO cool!
This is really great!! Thanks for the great idea!
awesome idea, Ill have to give it try! Thanks for the chance to win!
Love this technique! It’s very “modern art”. Thanks for sharing!
great technique. thanks for sharing
wow! I never thought of using compressed air for this technique! I’ve always heard of blowing through a straw for techniques like this. The compressed air is a good alternative and a great idea for people that are respiratory handicapped.
Ok. I cannot wait to try this technique, it looks sooooo cool. Thanks
OMGoodness!!!! I want to try this right now!!!!! What a GREAT idea!
Very cool technique and card! I love the mists but haven’t been totally happy with some of the things I’ve used them for so I’ll definitely have to try this! Thanks for the great idea!
That technique is really neat!!!! I am always wanting to try new things. I will have to look for the items next time I am in the store. I like it and it reminds me of that particular art thing that they used to have at the carnivals. It was maybe 5×7 and you put different colors of paint on it and then you spin it and it “spreads” the colors.(sorry dont know the exact name of the craft). Thanks for sharing!
I’ve done a similar technique with liquid watercolors and a drinking straw as an art project for my pre-school class. It’s always lots of fun although 4 year olds tend to spit when they blow. I never thought about adapting it for use on a card. That may be my open house invitation.
Always so innovative!!! I love all things shimmery!! Thanks for the chance & the inspiration!
Teri
Always great to see your creativity. this super cool. Thanks for sharing.
That looks just as fun as the spin art I did at the county fairs when I was a child. Hot fudge is my favorite…in sundae toppings and Shimmerz Vibez. Gotta go pull out my TA mists and canned air to try this. Thanks Teri for the fun demo tutorial!
I have 3 cans of Air, but could sure use of shimmer to try this on. Great idea, thanks for sharing and God Bless.
Interesting technique. Thanks for the tutorial. Added compressed air to my list of things to pick up so I can try this.
Oh now THAT is just TOO AWESOME! I can’t wait to try this at home!
What a nifty technique! I love the effect on the card you made- very “hip” and uber cool!
haven’t try this cool technique yet. Love the new outcome on the card.
That’s such a greatidea – I can’t wait to try it.
What fun to see what you can do with mists and an air compressor! Have been wanting to try one….now I Have to! Thanks for the ideas. I can see turning blue into gorgeous sky on lots of cards and layouts……….thanks!
I have always wanted to try the Shimmerz. And I love your idea with the compressed air. Can’t wait to try it out.
Awesome idea!! I want to try it now
