Groovin’ with the Go-to Gals – Sweet Paper Pleats

Maren Benedict

I love all the pre-pleated products on the market these days, but have found this fun look can be achieved from your crafting supplies at home. Not only is it more economical, but it also gives you the freedom to change up the pleats to match your own personal style.

Seriously…all you need is paper and some adhesive! SO easy! You don’t need to stick to that pleated flower either! I tackled this topic in the latest PC 101 column, and found that the possibilities are seemingly endless.

So what are your options?

You can pleat entire images or even stamp on some pleated paper. Both of these options add dimension and interest to your main image and bring an entire new and trendy look to the traditional paper piecing.

I loved the end result of stamping on this pleated tree.

Already have a focal point in mind? You can easily pleat the background or part of the background or even add a pleated frame or ruffled edge to show it off! Pleated paper is also a fabulous alternative to ribbon when your stash is low.

In addition to what you pleat, you also have some stylistic options for how you pleat. You can just adhere and hand fold for a more ruffled and flexible look or pre-score your paper to make it more uniformed.

I hand-folded the pleats on this card for a less uniform look.

Changing the size of the pleats also changes up the look. Those big, wide pleats are perfect for larger spaces, whereas smaller pleats are best served for those little details such as pleating a flower stem.

I challenge you to give pleating a shot! I’ll give you a week and then randomly pick a participant to win a box of goodies from my stash! Just create something (be sure there is some pleating going on somewhere) and link it back up here!

Also, be sure to hop on over to my blog today for some step-by-step instructions on pleating!
