Welcome to Freebie Friday! Lately I’m really diggin’ the patchwork look. Not only does it remind me of the cozy quilts my grandma use to make, but there’s literally countless ways to create this simple design:
- Patterned paper scraps
- Die-cutted/Embossed squares
- Stamped squares
- Fabric squares
- Ribbon squares
And unlike a real quilt that can take hours, if not days, a paper ”quilt” can be made in just a few minutes. All you need in some fun product and a little imagination. Then you just “stitch” it all together!

Take Kim Kesti’s Thank You Squares Card above. As a paper crafter turned quilter, she showed off her love for both hobbies in this blog HERE.

Designer Genevieve Cassady’s Patchwork Thank You Card appears in our current September/October issue. She created her pretty patchwork by die-cutting cardstock squares and then stamping various patterns on them. With all the gorgeous colors and patterns, doesn’t it almost look like a real quilt?!
Wanna make your own paper “quilt”? Hero Arts’ Jennifer McGuire was nice enough to send over some chalk inks for two lucky paper crafters. Leave a comment telling me what product you would use to create the patchwork look. All comments must be received by midnight (MDT) on Sunday, Sept. 5.

Two lucky winners will each take home this fun set of chalk inks from Hero Arts!
Happy Friday!
Kelly
P.S. Looks like Go-to Gal Kim Hughes is also diggin’ the patchwork look! Hop over to her blog to see her fun “quilted” project!
P.P.S. It’s time to announce the winner of Kim’s Just My Type – Part II post!
Natasha G.P. (Sept. 1, 9:46 a.m.)
Congrats, Natasha! You’ve won some text-themed goodies! I’ll be contacting you shortly to get your mailing address. Thanks to all who left comments!

Scrap paper comes to mind, but I would definitely add ribbons, fabric, and other things with different texture. And use the ink to round up the overall quilted look.
I love these patchwork cards and will be making some this weekend. What a great way to use up my pattern paper scraps.
i love the way this looks and have never made a card like this! What a great way to use up those scraps of paper you cant seem to throw away!!!
Beautiful cards! I believe I’d use either stamped pieces of cardstock or some woven ribbon.
These are absolutely beautiful!! I have lots of scraps to use this way!
Cute!
Funny timing with your post – I was looking at real quilt patterns online the other day and thought – boy, these would make beautiful card fronts! I’d definitely use up some of the beautiful patterned cardstock that I have! thanks for the chance to win!
Hey Kelly, my answer for this question is kind of sad. My dear friend for about 30 years, Zee, went home to a place where cancer doesn’t exist! She was a quilter for many years. So when I sent her a card, I made quilted squares on the front. Sometimes under a focal image. Sometimes just the quilting was the focal. We lost her about 2 months ago, and now every time I see a quilted card, I shed a tear or two. But she’d want me to be happy, so I’ll continue making ‘quilted’ cards for others. (In her honor)
Thanks for the memories.
Great design to use up scraps and be able to use some of my stamps. I’m thinking it would make a nice Christmas quilt card to “keep warm during the holidays”.
A very pretty concept and a great way to use your scraps. Love the idea.
Lots of patterned paper or background stamps
A square punch! Love the cards. I’m on my way to my desk right now!
I would use stamps stamped on solid coloured backgrounds to make the quilt!
I would use different embossing folders from my cuttlebug and then use square punches for the squares. Thanks for the chance to win!
I’ve made a patchwork card, using 1″ squares of wallpaper, sashed with ribbon that I stitched on my sewing machine. I would definitely use paper to make a patchwork card as it is easier to use on a card than fabric (I have both & have used both on a card), but the next patchwork card I make will explore a pieced quilt block, not just squares. Having made some quilts and having plenty of quilt block patterns, I have lots of options. A card made using both paper & fabric in a quilt design would be interesting, too. Adding other things, like ribbon, buttons, or embroidery, would be frosting on the cake!
I may use a lot from my paper scraps, and maybe some stitching or ribbons. One of the squares could be a digistamp or a stamped cardstock.
Thanks for sharing ideas!
I would use some of my vintage paper, cut with punches and zig-zag stitch around them. Add some embellies or sentiment and it would be cute.
Scrap paper! Love this look – super cute. Thanks for the chance to win!!
I would use a combination of scrap paper and masking to create one of the quilt patterns I’ve seen recently! Thanks for the idea!
I’d use a lot of beautiful fall colored cardstock and buttons.

I like to use my paper scraps because i accumulate sooo many of them. It’s a great idea so that my pretty papers don’t go to waste!
I have a large collection of quilts, which we use every day. These quilts will go together much faster and be more versatile. Love them.
I love the quilted look and just dusted off the old sewing machine, going to use some of my scraps and make some fall cards with the quilted look, and then move on to the christmas look, think the snow man could use a quilt to keep cold!!! And where I dont have scraps to match, that is when stamping comes into play, just make my own patterns to match!! These gorgeous inks would help wonders!!
Thanks for the chance.
Donna
I would try using this on fabric. Fun!
I would use BOO…something I decided to do this year on my blog to encourage others during these tough economic times…BOO = “Bringin’ Out the Old”…..so I would use pops of color from a variety of papers, inks AND embellishments which I LOVED when I purchased but just hadn’t found a creative home for them.
Thanks for the opportunity to win.
I would def use patterened paper and inks to make a quilt card- love love love it!
I am trying to get better at making my own background papers so I would definitely use cardstock, ink, and stamps and try to have a “do it yourself” quilted card!
I love that stamped square look, but would probably want to use up some of my **ginormous** patterned paper stash to make a quilted card–loving this idea! Thanks for the chance to win!
I would create a patchwork frame-able project for my bedroom wall. I am looking and looking and just can’t find the perfect wall decoration, so what’s a crafty girl to do but create her own- what I have pictured in my mind is perfect~!
This would be a great way to use up the oodles of scrap paper I have that keeps growing and growing. I would also use some texture plates to add some dimension.
I love the two examples of the patchwork technique! My favorite way to do this is to use up some of my coordinating scraps! Gets just a little more out of those left over pieces!
I will soooo CASE Genevieve Cassaday’s card; elegant, yet simple.
Great cards. I would use all my stamped pieces and then stitch them to give quilting effect. Great giveaway.
I love patchwork cards and have made them before but I would love to use the chalk inks to create a background paper for a scrapvook page. That would be very cool!
Love Genny’s card – great background stamps and I just love the colors she used! I would however use patterened paper – so quick and easy, especially if you use one of the 6×6 pads from Basic Grey or Cosmo Cricket! The colors all work together, and the pattersn are perfect for mini paper quilts! Thanks for the opportunity to win these awesome inks!
For quilt cards I would use scraps from a coordinating line, buttons and rub-on stitches.
I think this a great way to use up those paper scraps
Scraps from paper crafts, distress inks and pens (white and black) to do faux stitching are my main choice for this project.
Perfect idea for those scraps I just can’t seem to part with! Thanks for the inspiration! What a great giveaway!
Excellent! Fun examples of cards that has an impact and so well suited to use scraps! Thanks for sharing!
Since I have so many scraps sitting around, I will try to use some of them up using this technique! Thanks for the continuous creative ideas!
Hmmm… probably patterned paper scraps or real fabric. I love the look of the patchwork cards!
I would make cards for thanksgiving
I have so many scraps sitting around that I would definitely have to use those to create a quilt-look card. Those chalk inks would be awesome to use as well.
I would use patterned paper scraps and/or stamped backgrounds. I have been wanting to try this technique for a long time and have never gotten around to it. Maybe this will finally give me the little boost I need. Thanks for the opportunity to win all of this wonderful ink! Who couldn’t use more ink?!
Oh Wow I totally need to dig in to my scrap designer paper drawer & make some cute quilt inspired cards! What a cute idea! Thanks for posting it!
I think I would use some patterned paper scraps and a square punch! I think I might try a baby quilt with some cute OA papers!
i use Fabric and needle then sew a cross-stitch
Those are adorable what a fab way to use up tiny leftovers will have to make some cards like this thanks for the idea
Love the idea of the patchwork, I would use the sewing machine to add some stitching.
