Kim Kesti

Did you know that January is National Hobby Month? What a grand time to take stock of why crafting makes us such happy campers.

Since I was a small child, I’ve loved crafts. I’ll never forget the first little cross-stitch turtle I made. Then, it was on to painting plaster, macramé and who could forget the era of “dip ‘n drape”? As a young married woman, I sewed dolls and painted chunks of wood for a local craft fair. Many a happy hour was spent working on these crafts.

Today, I think I need to follow my friend Mel’s advice and hang a “New Hobby Need Not Apply” sign on my front door. I’m already up to my ears in fabric for quilting, yarn for knitting and of course, my beloved paper crafting. There are not enough hours in the day/week/month to accomplish everything. But, it’s really not the finished product that matters – it’s the joy of creating.

I combined a little bit of sewing on this card I created with the new BasicGrey Hopscotch collection. The patterned paper reminds me of a quilt, too.

  1. Jen R says:

I’ve got too many hobbies to count!

  2. I have numerous hobbies, but the ones occupying the majority of my time these days are photography and card making.

  3. Rachel says:

I did cross-stitch when I was younger, and probably is the reason I ended up needing glasses! Now, I make lots of cards, and sometimes scrapbook pages.

  4. Cathy says:

I’ve gone from crewel embroidery to cake decorating to cross stitch to scrapbooking and card making–all of them fun!

  5. NatQuebec says:

What a nice card ! Beside scrapbooking I do a lot of cross stitching ( the most but also balckwork & hardanger), sewing ( to mount my stitching). I also made tole painting some years ago and maybe I will do it again one day ? Love crafts !

  6. Chris says:

Before children I spent most of my hobby time with cross-stitch and other needlecrafts (Hardanger, drawn thread, pulled thread, etc). My last piece was done about 1997, a year after my oldest daughter was born. Now, I don’t sit down long enough to stitch! And I’ve also learned that I need magnifying glass and special lighting. So, with lots of pictures of the kids, a poor memory and poor eyesight, I have switched to scrapbooking. And I love Basic Grey paper!

  7. Barbara A. says:

In my younger days, I learn to cross stich, sewing, crafts I have had ask my Mom to teach me. Now it’s photography and scrapbooking and I’m in a card making club. My young daughter is very much interesting in crafts too, learning some of the things I did when I was her age! Thank you for a chance for the great BasicGrey giveaway!

  8. Whitney Weyeneth says:

When my husband left for Iraq for the second time, we lived 20 hours away from our family and I knew I was going to need some more hobbies to do while he was away. I joined a kit club at my local scrapbook store and met a woman who was also a military wife. We talked and became good friends. She introduced to me making our own eyeshadow. I know it doesn’t sound crafty, but there was something about ordering the ingredients, mixing infinite colors together, and having a finished product I could use. I loved making my own make-up that wasn’t harmful to my face!

  9. Maryann says:

When kids were younger, went through a myriad of hobbies–sewing, crochet, stitchery, furniture refinishing, woodworking, etc., etc. Now it’s pretty much card crafting, and a hobby that lets me put my feet up–reading.

  10. Sandra ltb says:

my current hobby would be card making … I can not get enough of surfing the web for ideas and inspiration, love my fun tools and papers … love making different things for my family and friends.
    Thanks for the fun!
    Sandra ltb

  11. Felicia Young says:

Wow my past hobbies included collecting comic books! How funny is that, needless to say I don’t do it anymore and I gave my son all of my comic books and he loves them. Now it is scrapbooking and card making and has been for 12 years this month!

  12. Greta Hess says:

I’m with you–not enough time to do everything I’d like! I used to crochet afghans and do counted cross stitch. I still have an unfinished cross stitch project I want to finish up and get framed. Card-making is my love at this time, so everything else gets pushed aside! Thanks for a chance to win this collection!

  13. Staci Jones says:

My favorite hobby is making scrapbooks for my kids. I can’t wait till they get older and I can give them their scrapbooks.

  14. Current- crafting (paper and sewing) and singing

Past–singing, but I always knew I loved crafting and arts! Just didn’t have time!

  15. Karen C. says:

My favorite hobby is paper crafting!!! I love all mixed media arts and need to take more time to do them…for now, stamping and paper crafting are in the lead… :)

  16. Bernie says:

I have been crafting for nearly 60 years. I started by making my mother a Mother’s day card in Kindergarten, there is crocheting, macramé, sewing quilting, scrap booking, gosh the list just goes on and on but my first love has always been card making. My other hobbies are either expensive or time consuming so they are reserved as gifts for special occasions. I love being able to create a card and pop it in the mail. I try to send out a thinking of you card once or twice a month and send them to people who aren’t expecting it. It always seems they are received on a day when that someone really needed a little something to brighten their day. I think that’s what makes it such a special hobby.
    Blessings Bernie

  17. f lynn rush says:

it seems to me that my crafts have always used paper or involved some kind of needlework. today, most prevalent are quilting and paper crafts. more often, i will be working on some kind of paper project. i make cards, mostly for my mom, and, more than that, i enjoy making non-card items, like hangings. as far as basic grey goes? it is one of my favorites. this and cosmic cricket have a special container! love my paper!

  18. Gerri Herbst says:

I used to do a lot of dried flower arrangements in the day. I had them all over the house. Now I wont be caught dead with them. LOL. Now its all about paper crafting.

  19. Tammy Blake says:

I love your “Thank You” card! I love my paper crafting!! I have done scrapbooking, cake decorating, embroidery and everything in between!! But no craft has captured my heart like card making. I spend hours upon hours playing with all my paper, stickers, ribbon and all my other treasures that go into card making!! I am sure I will never, ever tire of this craft!! And I need this new collection!!! Thanks for the chance to win!!! Have a great day!!!

  20. Toni Storie says:

Of course, I paper craft! I love it and I love how others seem to feel when I give them a handmade creation. I also love to bake! That has a delicious and sometimes fattening result. There is nothing more satisfying that giving that second helping of whatever to my family. I also used to belly dance. I really enjoyed that too. After my child, however, I am not certain that any of my costumes would fit. Oh well!

  21. I’ve tried so many crafts I can barely count them all. I got to over 30 but occasionally I’ll remember another that didn’t make the list! My big ones are the same as yours. Sewing, knitting/crochet and paper crafting, of course! One of my more unique talents is making bras. Real, looks-like-store bought bras! Only better fitting of course!

  22. yvonne says:

Lots of crafts over the years but my fav is stamping!

  23. Jean Marmo says:

I have a crate of counted cross stitch patterns and kits sitting in the basement. Those kind of went by the wayside when I started scrapping. I really should go drag them out……

  24. LOVE those cute butterflies on your darling card! I’m a scrapbooker through and through!

  25. Vickie says:

I love scrapbooking and card making especially with my cricut and cuttlebug.

  26. Maria Matter says:

    gorgeous card!!!
I’ve gone from cross stitching to scrapbooking to card making…wonder what I’ll do next? lol

  27. Dana W says:

I also cross stitch, which i make small cross stitch projects into cards (and big projects for framing)

  28. Suzze says:

I’ve done rug hooking, macrame, dot painting, embroidery, cross stitching, plus cardmaking, rubber stamping and papercrafting. I also do storytime at the book store I work at, so do a new craft with the kids every week!

  29. Julia says:

My past hobbies are cross stitch and basket making. Now I spend most of my time cardmaking, but I still save a little time to knit, tole paint and make jewelry. I’ve decided to add another hobby and that is calligraphy. I need a hobby house just to store everything!!!

  30. Selina says:

Crafting came from necessity when I wanted to share gifts with family & friends with little money as a child. I began cross stitching, sewing with my Mom, making dolls and lot’s of other crafts.

As I married I continued finding unique crafts to make and give as gifts. I remember one time hand sewing & stuffing a pillow in the car on a 6 hour trip to families house for a Christmas gift.

Today, I love to do paper crafting with making notebooks, journals, cards and scrapbooking…for the same reason…to give as gifts to encourage others and share some love with them!

  31. Susan S says:

My favorite hobby is card-making. Second is crocheting, and third is reading. My Mom was an avid sew-er when we were younger and I did that for time – making clothes for myself and my toddler. A friend got me into cross-stitching over 20 years ago and I had 2 or 3 projects going – buy then my eyes got older and it was hard to follow the smaller patterns. I used to make crafts for fairs and even rented space in a craft store.

I’ve loved it all but I must say that card-making for is my all-time favorite.

  32. Jenny Kozar says:

Paper crafting is #1 is my heart and I really want to get into jewelry making but just feel that I do not have enough time that I need (and I have way too many things I NEED (LOL) for papercrafting so that is were my hobby budget goes. So Thank you for the opportunity to win some goodies.

  33. Melissa H. says:

My hobby keeps me sane! :) hehe

I love to papercraft, as well as sew, and am getting into crocheting. I love all things crafty really.. someday soon I’d like to make a quilt and also learn to knit.

  34. Nancy says:

Paper paper paper…I love anything to do with paper: scrapbooking, card making, 3d projects…and I love making special things for the special people in my life. Reminds them and me of how important they are to me!

  35. Lyn S says:

I’ve had heaps of hobbies both now and in the past. Presently it’s mostly stamping and papercrafts. In the past it’s been knitting, sewing, cross stitch, patchwork, genealogy and stamp collecting (postage ones). I also hooked a rug once, which still sits on my bedroom floor. I’d love to learn crochet too, but being a lefty I could never quite get the hang of it.

  36. Super cute card!!! From the time I was 7 until I graduated from college, my primary hobby was dancing (tap, ballet and jazz), but I always LOVED drawing and making crafts too!! These days I spend my free time stamping, making paper crafts, hiking, skiing, snowshoeing, cooking, reading, traveling, and hanging out with my husband and friends!!

  37. Brenda Lubrant says:

My hobbies are: Cardmaking, creating mini albums, altering books and creating door hangings. I also am a big gardener. I live in the Midwest so it is a seasonal hobby. My other love is to go to the gym to work out. I also used to be into genealogy which cosumed a lot of time.

  38. Ola says:

My hobbies are cardmaking, scrapbooking and I love taking pictures…. but I’m not that great at out! I also love sports….. I love to go out & play baseball & basketball with my youngest son & I really enjoy watching him play!!!

I like you, have run the gamut of crafting…sewing, embroidering, knitting, crocheting. I have no idea what dip and drape is though

  40. Kimberly S says:

I’ve tried so many crafts through the years from cross-stitch to quilting, to crochet. I revisit them all when the mood hits to work on a project, just wish there were more hours in the day! lol

  41. wanda says:

I’ve only been crafting for 4 years but I love making items that I donate to our various charities for fundraisers. I enjoy creating jewerly, greeting cards and tags, family cookbooks with family pictures and recipes and decorating wreaths. Currently, I’m working on a gift basket for our Chamber of Commerce Winter Ball auction fundraiser – it will have a handmade Valentine’s card, a custom made glass block light that I etched a heart design on and decorated with bows and roses, adding a heart shaped box of candy and a really nice bracelet – hope it goes over well at auction!

  42. karen q says:

Many years ago I used to crochet and do counted cross stitch. I have made countless doilies and framed pieces. My hands and eyes can’t handle the intricate work anymore but it was fun at the time. I either sew or papercraft now. Can’t imagine life without creative time,

  43. Mary Beth says:

My first hobby was my sticker book. I loved collecting stickers with my friends. Scratch and sniff were my favorites! Of course, I still buy them for my kids at school. I also did a little cross stitch and latch hooking, and now it’s scrappin’ and card making! I love Basic Gray! Thanks for the giveaway!

  44. Sheri K says:

My current “thing” is paper crafting, mostly card making. In my younger years I was always crafting something–from felt ornaments, counted cross stitch, knitting, crocheting (I knit at least 50 sweaters in MN, after moving to AZ no need for those lovely heavy sweaters!), sewing ( I even made my own wedding gown) and I did hand made matching outfits for my kids–that had ribbon embroidery, hand picture smocking–but alas, they will no longer wear them–just because they are now adults!

  45. HawaiianLibrarian says:

I used to collect commemorative US postage stamps; I should resurrect them for papercrafting! I used to sew madly; I should dust off the sewing machine for papercrafting.! I used to collect postcards; if I could find them I’d use them for papercrafting!

  46. Carol Metully says:

Oh my..where do I start? Like you I started as a young child. Mine was with Play Dough..homemade kind, of course!! I’ve been sewing on a machine since I was 6 (by hand before that). When I was about 9 and Barbie came to my life, I made her furniture out of shoe boxes and fabric. Then crocheting, and scrapbooking the old fashioned way..and by that, I mean, without “real” scrapbooking stuff. You know, construction paper and Elmer’s glue! (Also used to make Barbie furniture btw!!!) After all of the crocheting, tole painting, quilting, sewing as a business venture, I finally found my all-time fave…..Card Making and Scrapbooking with FUN STUFF!

I love BG and Hopscotch is real pretty! I think your card is too!!

  47. Cynthia B. says:

Well, beyond my papercrafting hobbies (cardmaking and scrapbooking), I think my most enduring hobby (also involving paper!) – is reading. When I was young, we didn’t go out and play much because we were latchkey kids, and during the summers we’d just spend hours reading.
I think my own kids have picked up on that…they’ve read from an early age, filling up our bookcases at home with beloved books and often visiting the library. Reading truly opens up new worlds, letting us learn new things and experience new adventures. :)

  48. Hope says:

As far as hobbies go, I’ve always had something to do! I used to write a lot, in journals and short stories. And I have always read a lot. I’m big on collecting things too, always something different, from a sticker book to stuffed care bears. As far as crafting hobbies, jewelry making and card making are what I love! I tried my hand at sewing and making plushies, but it hasn’t taken off quite yet, I get scared of the seeing machine LOL! And when I was in high school, I used to do a lot of miscellaneous and odd crafts that would just come to me, like I made a bracelet out of a toothbrush handle once!

  49. Beautiful card!
I scrapbook as well as make cards. My scrapbooking hobby is special because I’m preserving our families memories to last for years. So that they will hopefully be passed along throughout the years for generations. My boys love looking through our scrapbooks every now and then.
Thank you for the chance to win this wonderful collection of BG! :)

  50. Lena says:
