Welcome to Magazine Monday! Did you know May is National Pet Month? A month to celebrate the benefits of pet ownership and support pet adoption.
According to our reader survey, over half of our readers are pet owners. I myself am the proud mama of an Italian Greyhound named Lexus (she’s made an appearance on this blog a time or two…does anyone remember Santa’s helper?). I adopted her three years ago, and I can honestly say she warmed her way into my heart (except for the days when she decides she’s part-cat and therefore wants nothing to do with me).
Can anyone relate? Well, this month is set aside to give back to our pets. Whether you’re up for a Mani-PETi (a day of grooming for both you and your pet) or you’ve thought about adopting a new friend, May is the month to do it!

Our 2 dogs Atticus and Jem are our comedy relief – guaranteed to cheer us up no matter how crappy the day might have been or even how naughty they’ve been! Atticus (a Rhodesian Ridgeback/Doberman mix) is pretty tall and has helped himself to a pound of chicken, 2 frozen steaks and an entire pork tenderloin (among other things) from our kitchen counter. Jem (a Pitbull mix) has finally gotten over his flip flop and dish towel obsessions and has decided he’s an interior decorator. Yesterday morning I found a potted plant sitting in the middle of his bed – not destroyed or spilled – just sitting upright like that was where it belonged! I’m so grateful they found their way into our lives and can’t imagine a day without them.
How cute are they!!
Hugs x
I have 3 pets (2 dogs and a parrot) and all can act goofy at times. My parrot likes to ring like the phone. His favorite toy is an empty kleenex box which he squeezes himself into and then sits and talks to himself.
My cat apparently didn’t like my Mom’s new Christmas decoration, a “melted” snowman. Snowball went over to it, looked at it, looked back at us, and threw up on it. I have never laughed so hard in my life! After she threw it away, he was perfectly fine.
My dog has a love for banana’s. He can hear the snap of someone breaking off a banana from the bunch and come running, even if he is in another room. ( My husband often retreats to his office so that he can eat his banana alone.) Hehehe. Though, we do share many bananas with him. My dog, Darby, is just a little Shih Tsu.
I have the best dog ever. Lacey is a boxer with the greatest personality and so lovable. When she was a puppy she got into alot of mischief! We were having our bathroom redone and all the “stuff” from the medicine chest was in a box on the floor in my bedroom. While I was at work, she ate a tube of preparation H! Between the vet bill, daily blood work, and stay over in the hospital, you can’t imagine what it cost
To think she turned out to be the best dog ever!
One time when we came home Shivers (Viszla) was sleeping on her back with all four legs in the air. I tried to get a picture before she woke up…
Happy birthday Kerri
Of course I remember Lexus! She’s a cutie! CUTE projects!! OK, here’s my dog story! We adopted our Australian Shepherd after Hurricane Katrina. She was not abandoned, she was given up by an elderly owner who was going to be moving into a nursing home (that’s what they told us). Anyway, we bring her home, and we know NOTHING about her breed. Well, an Aussie is a herding dog. I decide to take her to basic obedience, and my two girls come with and observe. I believe it was the 2nd time at obedience that we realize . . . WOW, she is SMART!! A characteristic of the breed! These are the dogs that EXCEL in agility! So, this is the funny part. We get home from obedience training, and both of my girls and I are in the back yard letting off some steam after being in the big arena building where we have obedience training. Princess GOES crazy and displays her herding instincts in full force! She is TEARING around the backyard, cutting the corners sharply, and looking like she was shot out of a cannon! She actually ran tight circles around both of the girls, and continued “herding invisible sheep” . . . as we came to joke about it! Meanwhile, this frantic action has prompted me to double over laughing hysterically. I had tears running down my face because I was laughing so hard, and my stomach hurt so bad from laughing! Finally Princess finishes her performance, and just plops down in the middle of the yard panting like a maniac! When I finally got ahold of myself, I went in the house, got her a huge bowl of cold water, and complimented her on her herding!! She doesn’t do that as much anymore, but that first time was PRICELESS! She is the BEST dog, and she has our entire family wrapped firmly around her paw!!
Well I love anything we do to celebrate our pets. I have two dogs and my oldest dog (Curtis) LOVES toilet paper. At least twice a week when we get home we will see the toilet paper trailing from the bathroom to my craft room and still attached to the roll. I do not know how he does it. He is very clever but sometimes a pain. But I would not trade him for anything….thanks for letting me share.
Well, first, happy birthday!!!!
Second, this isn’t funny, but neat. My boyfriend taught our dog to hold a treat in his mouth without eating it, no matter how long he tells him to hold it (in his mouth). He would keep it there all day if he asked him to. But when he says,”Ok, Duke”, THEN Duke eats it.
My cat when I was a teenager, Oscar, was a GREAT, sweet cat. But I would tease him and tease him and tease him until he finally couldn’t take it anymore. He would chase me down the hall, biting my butt all the way. I would scream and run saying that I was sorry….
When I was a toddle, if I strayed toward the street, my dog would run over, grab me by my diaper, and drag me back to safety. Now THAT is a good dog!!
Love the pet projects! I have 2 pugs so my funniest pet story is that if you ask my daughter what a dog says – she snorts like a pug! Not a bark or a woof- a snort!
Love my puggies!
We had a cat when one of my sons was in elementary school and the cat would always sit on my son’s shoulder until the bus came.
I LOOOOOOOOOOVE my pets! I used to live on a farm–and it was great seeing all the new babies (chickens, sheep, goats, pigs, cows, etc.). My fav are little cats and dogs….they are just the cutest. I loved when my dog, Olsen, was a little baby. We got him when he was 2 months old. He had the biggest feet ever! He is now 3 years old, and I crack up every time Olsen begs for lettuce. He sits and whines until I pull a piece off just for him. He knows when it’s out on the counter too–he will sit right under the area and stare at the lettuce (which he can’t see since I put it near the back of the counter…but he stares in that direction). I love that my dog loves to eat lettuce. Makes me feel healthy:) LOL!
We have been fostering dogs for quite some time and enjoy it so much. We’ve met some great families as our dogs have gotten adopted out and some great people as we volunteer. For our big yearly fundraiser we are all at a hotel – so picture 50 volunteer familites with 150 or so beagles running around a hotel! I had left my room door propped open as I went to get ice. Imagine my surprise when I got back with my bucket of ice to find an extra beagle in my room. Apparently one of the other dogs got loose from their room and decided to let himself in to play with my dogs. Gotta love those crazy dogs!
I love my cats and this story involves a previous cat that owned me. It was summer and I was grilling chicken for supper. My sister came in and said to me ” I thought we were having chicken tonight” “We are” I replied. Then she asked “Well where did the steak come from?” There in the middle of the patio was a hot, freshly grilled steak and one of my cats, trying to eat his “prize”. We realized he had stolen a large t-bone steak from one of our neighbors. We listened for a cry of outrage and looked for signs of someone else grilling near by and never found a clue about where the steak came from. I’m sure someone was appalled to go back out to their grill and discover that they were 1 short. I can just imagine someone trying to explain that they cooked one more and when they went back out, they were one short.
Our dog Cotton (a little Bichon) used to chase firecrackers and didn’t even stop if they “got” him. IT was funny but also sad that he didn’t know any better….
Thanks!
I have two dogs, Dolly and Tillie, and they are the best of friends. Tillie is the smaller one (doxie) but she is very protective of Dolly (husky). When they go out side for their morning ritual, Tillie will stand at the top of the stairs to “oversee” that nobody in the neighborhood is messing with Dolly, but let them come near Tillie, and she will run like a “scardy dog” – that’s her nickname!
I have two dogs, one sheltie named “Rielly” and one sheltie/pomeranian named “Maggie”, and my daughter has a green betta named “Picklefish”. I think we pick the goofiest pets, or they are fine when we get them and then we “goof” them up. Maggie play ball with herself, Rielly eats toilet paper, and Picklefish dives into the rocks at the bottom of his tank. Our family would never be the same without them. The sweetest dogs in my life have been the ones I have adopted.
Oh boy, I am getting a great giggle laughing with everyone about our fur-kids! We have 4 fur kids, a 150# lab, Moose, who thinks he is a lap dog. A 6 yr old Mini Schnauzer, Tigger, who loves to float on a raft in the pool with me. Jazzy, a cakapoo, who is The Queen of the house. She guards my, well her, side of the bedroom from any other 4 legged creature of even thinking of touching a paw in there. And we now have a 4 month old mini schnauzer, Zoe. The main attraction is when I saw ” Who’s the boss?”…. Jazzy starts to growl at Moose & he barks at her & the circus begins! Round & round they go! She chasing him! lol
Gotta start the story by describing my uncle – a rather large man who taps his toes and figures to soundless music while he sleeps. I must also mention that he has a very hairy chest. Our cat had four kittens who were approx. 4 weeks old at the time of the attack! My uncle was napping with his arms crossed across his hairy chest, fingers tapping to the soundless music, little kitties spying the tapping fingers, little sharp claws attacking said fingers folded on hairy chest…..uncle nearly sent into cardiac arrest!
We have 2 Rottweiler mix doggies-6 years old- that we rescued when they were 6 months old…they make us laugh each and every day and we feel super blessed they are in our lives…I think one of the funniest things is when they see other animals on the TV and they shoot out the doggie door barking and looking for the other animals…sometimes it is a bear, sometimes a buffalo and they are completely convinced the animal is out there…we laugh till our sides hurt…i know our life would be ever so dull without our doggies…Happy Birthday Kerri!!!
These stories are too funny! Well, we’ve just recently adopted a 4 yo mini schnauzer and she came to us with some rather silly habits. For one thing, after she goes outside to “potty” she comes back into the house and runs like a bullet and jumps for the couch. Watch out whoever happens to be sitting there! Also, this little girl really enjoys sleeping in. When I get up and take her outside for her morning routine, if she thinks it’s too early, when she comes back inside, she runs right back up to her bed and stays there until she’s ready to get up! Too funny!
Cute projects! My Shih Tzu Fluffy loves peanut butter. Somehow she once stole the plastic peanut butter jar from the pantry and took it under the couch. She was able to get the lid off herself, and was happily helping herself to the contents. She was licking her chops for a while.. haha!
I don’t really have a funny pet story because my allergies have prevented me from having a pet, boo hoo!

My cat Jasper will watch a reflection on the wall for a long time…sometimes he makes odd chirping sounds and jumps ut to catch the reflection..it is so funny!!
We have a Golden Retriever who is a little over 1 years old now & acts just like a spoiled child sometimes!! Ever see a kid throw a fit in the mall & just drop to the ground….well that is what my naughty Wilson does. He ran accross the street one day to my neighbors & would not come back when called- it was like a “fun” game for him. Luckly I grabbed a treat when I ran after him, so was able to coax him to me after 5 minutes of him sniffing every inch of the neighbors front yard : ) As I’m trying to lead my 70 pound pooch towards home by his collar, he stiffened up & dropped to his back w/legs in the air….he would not get up for anything, I even tried pulling him & semi-lifting my 70pounder onto his feet…as I’m doing this the mailman showed up, I’m glad he was laughing about it. I ended up actually carrying my 70 pound naughty dog home…keep in mind it was a muddy spring. Gotta love our pets!!!
My dog, Toby often plays fetch with himself. He can throw a squeaky toy or ball a few feet then go get it. It always makes me laugh when I see how ingenious he is!
My rescue cat, Jesse, loves to sit against a wall balanced on the base of his tail. He looks like a person sitting in a chair! It is so funny. And when we laugh, he looks at us like ‘there goes those crazy humans again. I have no idea what their problem is.’ I’ve also had a really dumb cat that got too close to a candle and set the tips of his tail hairs smoldering. He wasn’t hurt and the burnt hair was just the tips or of course it wouldn’t be funny. Weird thing is he didn’t notice, not even the smell!
I love my fur children-even though I’m the recycled pet food picker upper! I have lots of funny stories, but the one I remember most is that we adopted Pepper, an eight year old beagle with a thyroid problem, and she lived in the garage before we brought her home. She had a crocheted orange blanket, and she would spin her nose into it and somehow wrap her entire body in it, with just her nose sticking out! Somehow she looked like a butterfly cocoon, and no one could catch her getting out of it, so we didn’t know how she did it. When she realized that she was staying in the house with the other two beagles she quit doing it because she was warm. I sure miss her.
I’m laughing at all these funny stories! Pets are the best! I have 4 cats and each has a distinct personality – they’re all slightly crazy in their own way. I was on the phone with my mom one night when Cubby – the long grey haired cat – came flying through the room with a large paper bag trailing behind him – his head was through one of the handles. He hid behind a couch. I started laughing and told my mom what was so funny, but didn’t interrupt my conversation to go help him. In a few minutes, he came out from behind the couch with just the paper handle still around his neck.
Peevey, who died last February, always knew when it was five o’clock. He would always follow my husband around the house. If my husband went into the bathroom, he would sit outside pawing at the door. My six-week old kitten doesn’t want to be let out. She keeps jumping on my keyboard while I’m typing this. I know I will have many future stories with her!
I’m a dog person through & through, but also love all animals! My 4 yr old Standard Schnauzer has decided that he has to keep watch, so stays right next to the door when I’m on the computer & then when I get up from the chair he’s so happy–as though I’ve been gone! Can’t be without my puppydogs–always make me feel loved & needed!
My hubby & I have always had a dog. The first was a Border Collie/Australian Shepard mix (Sadie)…very smart!! When he would tease me, she’d show ALL of her teeth & growl viciously. It was all part of the joke..and she loved it!! Sometimes, she’d pull him towards me and start growling until he put his hand on my knee, then she’d go craZy!! We now have a full Border Collie, Buddy!! He is the most loyal, loving dog I’ve ever had. He is a herder!! He herds all the dogs at the beach back to their owners. He herds children (very lovingly) back to their parents. But the funniest thing he herds is…(drum roll, please) the lawnmower! He circles it, he cuts in front and tries to round it back to the garage!! He has always done this and never has gotten the lawnmower to go home!!! At least not ill the yard is done!
Our pets love us unconditionally! They only ask that we take care of them and even for those that don’t…their pets still love them! God Bless the animals in our lives!!
Our dog Josie is 4 years old a has always been a garden wreaker (although she is not as gung-ho about it as she was in her puppy days). I would put potted cacti around other pot plants so she couldn’t get to them until I discovered that not even cacti bother her. She upended the cactus and threw it around the garden just like any other plant..
I have so enjoyed reading all of the stories. My story is not funny but my cat Dustbunny is unique. She is a runt and her mother died in childbirth. We call her psychology damaged becaused because 5 years later she still tries to nurse on me. She also loves to chew paper and play in the water. But what makes her really unique is that she will wake me if my sugar level goes too low and she has found a thyroid and parathyroid tumor that the doctors did not find! The tumors did not show on testing-just the blood levels. Because of her the surgeon was able to go to the correct area for the parathyroid tumor (It can be anywhere in the chest and neck and is the size of a piece of rice.) So needless to say I tolerate the occassional piece of scrapbooking paper that gets chewed up! LOL
Our rescue golden retriever, Colby, thinks he’s human. What ever we sit on, so does he…even the deck chairs!
Forgive my shorthand… Lousy keyboard. I’m sitting outside and notice the back end of a mouse hanging down from under a bench. Move the bench and a desiccated mouse falls to the ground – practically “clicks” when it lands. Sat back down about 10ft away. Outdoor cat shows up about then. I point to the mouse, ask the cat if she knows anything about it. She walks over, sniffs it, looks at me as if to say, “Nope. Don’t know anything about it. Not one of mine.” and strolls off. Figured out later that it was one she lost. She had a tendency to “play” with her snacks by tossing them in the air over and over. This one must have fallen between the bench and wall, gotten stuck there and the cat didn’t know where it went so she walked away. Bit sick and humorous at the same time.
