Home Décor Project

It all started with my husband saying he didn’t like the natural wood box in our bedroom. Apparently the rustic look I was going for was lost on him. Granted, it is an old box that I’ve been carting around for the past 10 years.

My plan has been to decoupage the box using patterned paper to match my bedroom. I’ve been keeping an eye out for some fabulous paper to come along in blues and apple green. I finally found what I was searching for with Bo Bunny’s Welcome Home collection.

Decoupage is so much fun and easy to do. The hardest part for me is deciding on the design. I tried several different paper piece designs for the lid of the box before coming up with something I liked. With that done, the project was as simple as 1, 2, 3.

1. Cut patterned paper.

2. Distress edges with Tim Holtz’s Distress Ink and start gluing paper using Mod Podge. After gluing the patterned paper to the box, cover the whole box with another layer of Mod Podge.

3. An hour later, once it dries, finish off the lid edge with some lovely ribbon.

I left the design pretty flat and simple so I could put items on top of it. All in all I was happy with the result. My husband seemed to like it too. Not too bad for a morning of crafting!

Now that I’m on the kick, I’ve inspired myself to decoupage a shoebox or two for my daughter’s room. If you haven’t tried it yet, you really should!

Kerri, it looks like you held out for just the right papers! This is so pretty! I love decoupage…I did this to a bunch of flower pots that I have on my desk to hold pens, etc. and it coordinates perfectly with my office wallpaper..fun!

Sorry to be clueless, but when you do this technique do just you the mod podge as glue or do you paint the covered box with it at the end as well? In other words, is the paper “sealed” on in some way?

  10. Great project. I love the papers you used.

  11. Kerri says:

Jennifer – I used the Mod Podge to both glue the paper to the box and to seal it. Basically the paper baths in Mod Podge! :) Too much and the paper can get wavy but it usually dries flat.
