I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again: I pride myself as being a Do-It-Yourself kind of gal.
One of my greatest crafting pleasures is raiding my stash and making unique embellishments. DIY Stickpins anyone?
But I digress. Lately, I’ve been admiring the cupcake flags I’ve been seeing on Etsy.
Check out these digital ones from Ready Go and these fun flags from 4lilcupcakes.
I liked them so much that I decided to try my hand at making some for my cards.
All you need to make your own DIY flags is:
- strong glue
- toothpicks
- strips of paper
- pearls or gems
- scissors

Here’s what you do:
Start with a strip of patterned paper. Cover one side with glue.

Set a toothpick in the middle of the paper. Fold the paper over the toothpick so you have a flag.
Finish your flag by cutting a notch out of the end of it. If you are feeling adventurous, consider cutting a triangle at the end of your flag rather than cutting out a notch. Then, add a pearl or gem to the top of the toothpick. If the pearl’s a little loose, slather some glue on the end of your toothpick.

I used my DIY flags on two cards. Here I hung them sideways.

And here I cut triangles at the end of my flags. To give them a little extra pop, I added buttons. I think flowers or die cuts would be fun to embellish with, too.

Ready to make some flags of your own?
I’ve got a fun prize to get you started making them. Leave a comment here and I’ll pick two of you to win a 6×6 paper pad from the Victoria Gardens collection by Echo Park Paper Co. (which I used in my cards above)! All comments must be received by midnight (MDT) on Thursday, Aug. 11.

Two lucky winners will each take home this 6x6 paper pad!
Yours in flag making fun,
