Groovin’ with the Go-to Gals: Pumpkin Pickin’

If you’re like me, you’re enjoying some beautiful fall weather!

One of my favorite things about fall is decorating my home, filling it with the warmth and beauty and bounty of the season.  I have a buffet table in my dining room that I try to change up for the seasons.

When I saw these gorgeous decoupage pumpkins on the cover of the October issue of Country Living magazine, I knew I wanted to put some of my paper crafting supplies to work to create my own version.

How cute are these?!

And here is what I came up with…

Instead of decoupaging paper over my entire pumpkin, I sprayed them white and just added some die-cuts and alphabet stickers.

It was such a quick and fun project!  I first wrapped the stems with painters tape, then gave them two coats of cream colored spray paint.

I let them dry overnight, then went to work adding the fun stuff!  I added some Fancy Pants Summer’s End letter stickers and some pretty leaf die-cuts from Papertrey Ink’s Harvest Berries die collection.  I adhered them with decoupage glue, then gave my entire pumpkin a top coat of the decoupage.

They look so pretty sitting on my dining room table!  I just love it when I find other uses for my paper crafting supplies!

So do you have a pumpkin decorating/carving/gathering tradition?  I’d love to hear about it!  Leave me a comment here and I’ll choose one winner to take home this Harvest Berries die-cut from Papertrey Ink, and the Summer’s End collection by Fancy Pants! Comments must be received by 5 PM MDT on Thursday evening!

Your pumpkins are adorable and love the choice of products you used, Betsy. What an awesome prize! My DH and I used to always buy a fresh pumpkin for when the neighbor’s kids were young. Now they’ve all grown up, and our young nieces & nephews don’t live in the same state as us. Love decorating my house though for every season so my Fall decor includes a fake pumpkin that lights up. Enjoy going to gift shops to see all the different-colored pumpkins spray painted gold, white, copper & black with all the Fall foliage.

I love this!!! I have been hearing a lot of people talking this year about painting pumpkins instead of carving them but I never would have even thought to use scrapbooking supplies on the pumpkins as well!

  3. Jenny McGee says:

Our family gathers with my brother and his family and all Trick or Treat together in their neighborhood. It is a lot of fun.

I love your pumpkins – we don’t carve ours either – we like to “dress” them with hats, glasses, mustaches – you get the picture!

We actually don’t carve pumpkins, but what a great idea this is to decorate them with your scrappin’ stash!

  8. I love these painted pumpkins! So pretty!

  9. Shawn Wenrich says:

Outstanding post Betsy as always, these are awesome! My favorite pumpkin tradition is taking photos of my daughter carving our family pumpkin. She’s 12 now and just continues to get more artsy every year.

  10. Carolyn Hippen says:

Love your idea for decorating the pumpkins; so much less work than those on the Country Living cover. I too love to decorate for the fall season and will definitely be borrowing your idea. Thanks for all you share; you are a constant inspiration to me.

  11. We get several large pumpkins every year for the front porch, which we leave uncarved. These pumpkins are SO beautiful, though, that I may have to rethink that process this year. WOW!

  12. Cathy says:

We go to the pumpkin patch every year and the kids play and get to pick out a pumpkin. We don’t usually carve them, though, but sometimes we decorate them.

I know that many traditions seem to be maintained by Moms, but since our now-in-his-4th-year-of-med-school son was very little, his father has displayed multiple carved pumpkins along the walkway to our home to welcome trick or treaters. They create them together every year and our son makes a point of being here with his father to do it together – no matter what. Neither man is crafty or artistic, but the jack o lanterns reinforce their strong and continuing bond. I must say son Andrew is much handier with a knife these days!

  14. Betty-Ann says:

I usually prepare the pumpkins then my husband & son do the carving; I like to do some drilling too sometimes…like a polka-dotted pumpkin, cute.

  15. erin says:

Wow, never thought to dress up the pumpkins… but what a great idea… thanks for the chance to win.

  16. Your decorated pumpkins came out lovely! We visit the Pumpkin Patch to pick our Pumpkins, and carve them the day before Halloween!

  17. Wow your pumpkins turned out terrific, great idea using spray paint!

  18. Becky Green says:

Betsy! Your pumpkins look GREAT!!!!!! Seems everyone is doing pumpkins “over” these days!!!!!! :) No pumpkin “traditions” here, but I DO like to decorate the house too!

  19. I ADORE your pumpkins! One year, we had pumpkins that got left out until almost Thanksgiving. My husband threw them into the snow. Unfortunately, he threw them too close to our garden, so the following year, amongst tomatoes, zucchini, and basil, we had several pumpkin plants sprout. We ended up with almost 100 pumpkins! I wish I had seen these ideas back then!

  20. Val P says:

Love your idea. One year I sprayed some pumpkins gold and then decorated them with fall leaves. The looked very classy! I think this year I may buy a few of the fake pumpkins that you can carve and then spray and decorate them. Then they will last forever, unlike the real ones.

  21. katie brooks says:

love these! Yes we always carve pumpkins, it just isn’t halloween with out them.

  22. Mary D says:

Love pumpkins and the fall season! My DH always grows pumpkins for the “pumpkin patch garden” and the grandkids and friends children come and pick out their own special pumpkin! This tradition always makes DH very happy. Any leftover pumpkins are used for “fresh pumpkin pie”!

  23. Jean Marmo says:

Just gorgeous! I saw those pumpkins on the magazine and love yours! Spray painting them is a perfect idea!

  24. Nancy says:

When my daughter was little, we would go to the farm and buy pumpkins along with a cup of warm apple cider and doughnuts fresh from the fryer. Upon arriving home, Brianna and her dad would carve the pumpkins. Now that she is in college, that tradition has passed. Instead the stairs are decorated with miniature pumpkins. I need to get in the spirit and try to duplicate your glorious pumpkins.

  25. Michelle P says:

These are so adorable! I’ve been planning to make some white pumpkins too this year!

  26. Angela A says:

We love to carve pumpkins the night before Halloween and then take them to the grandparents house on Halloween night for all the trick or treaters to see!

  27. Elizabeth L says:

We always paint our pumpkins for something different than carving them! My kids love not getting their hands all gooey! :)

  28. I’m too late, aren’t i? :(
Well, i still have to tell you that all those pumpkins are GORGEOUS!!!
We have never really had a pumpkin carving tradition in my family, but it’s something i’ve always wanted to do so a few years ago, i started carving pumpkins with my nieces and we all LOVED it!!!

  29. 1craftynurse says:

I love them!!! What an adult way to decorate pumpkins!!! And much easier than all that carving and scooping…. Neat too!

  30. Amy C says:

Awesome pumpkins!! We love to go and pick out our pumpkins at the pumpkin patch and then we carve them together one evening. So fun!!

  31. Cynde says:

Great looking pumpkins Betsy. you never cease to amaze mw with all your talent!

  32. K. Jones says:

These pumpkins are stunning! We use everything from Mr. Potato Head bits to paint. I let the kids feel free to express themselves and make their pumpkins unique!

  33. Diane M says:

My husband is the pumpkin carver, he gets the kids involved and they all create masterpieces! This year he even grew his own pumpkins. They usually carve them the weekend before Halloween so they don’t get all yucky.
