I was flipping through some older issues of Paper Crafts Magazine when the PC 101 column in the last September/October issue caught my eye. Betsy Veldman showed nine ways to add texture to your projects. Some of the clever ideas were: paint, string, and other natural materials, distressing, embossing, and crumpling. Of course, Betsy’s samples were full of luxurious fall colors.
I wondered if I could do something similar with “spring” in mind. Now Kim Kesti style is pretty crisp and flat, so this was definitely a challenge. I pulled on my fun-and-cute-style hat and had a ball.
I used buttons and ribbon to add texture to my first card. The card is still clean and crisp, but it has that pop of cuteness that complements those crazy froggies. (Aren’t they to die for?)

This next card has a fun grass edge that I created by simply cutting a strip of paper multiple times. If you have some of those fancy fringe scissors, use them. If not, just use a steady hand like I did and it will turn out adorable. I also popped up the letter stickers with some foam tape; that adds some texture, too.

My last card employed one of Betsy’s tips: use an embossing folder. This Swiss dot folder is one of my favorites! Just tuck in any color cardstock and run it through your die cut machine. Instant texture!

So, if you are having a creative slump, pull out those older issues of Paper Crafts and you are guaranteed to be inspired. Are you a subscriber? Access the digital version right on your computer. They are gorgeous!

Love your cards, Kim! I like to use buttons and glitter for texture – sometimes an embossing folder helps.
I LOVE texture! I use embossing, I diecut coffee cuff cardboard for embellishments, I add gesso with a piece of mesh bag, I use burlap, twine, shoestrings….lots of ways to add texture! Love your bright and springy cards!
Especially love your button card! I usually just add ribbon to add texture.
Beautiful cards. Such happy colors.
Oh my!! I adore the colors on all of the cards, but I LOVE the Hello Spring card. Too cute!! One of my go-to tools for adding texture to a card is the Sew Easy. Simple but really adds that “something” to a card.
Great cards, Kim! To add texture to cards, I often use Impression Plates and embossing folders. In addition, ribbon, buttons or felt die-cuts always add a different texture. Thanks for the chance to win Hello Spring by EP!
I always like to add texture and dimension to my projects with distressing and embossing! Whether heat embossing or dry embossing….I love the extra oomph it adds to a project!
Such bright and happy cards. I use buttons, twine, embossing, both heat and folders, and I’m sure there’s other things I do.
I love to add texture to my projects by adding ribbon, twine, and buttons!

Buttons and brads are my favorite ways to add texture. I also put pop dots behind certain elements on my cards to make them ‘stand out’. Thanks for these great ideas, as well.
Great cards!! Thanks for the inspiration.
Beautiful spring cards, great inspiration, I love adding dimensional flowers and have started using my embossing folders again
beautiful projects Kim! I add texture all the time thru layers and embellishments.
What beautiful, happy, bright, and FUN cards!!! LOVE them all!!!
Beautiful cards, I love adding texture to my crafts.
I like to add texture by sewing on my projects
Texture is my middle name… I love to emboss and deboss and run paper through my paper crimper! BTW… I love the cards – its springtime and i’m loving it!
I love using my Cuttlebug.
Wow! I just LOVE the colors on all of the cards. So pretty!!! I like to add texture to my cards by using ribbon, buttons and embossing. Thanks for a chance to win such a fun paper pack.
I’m addicted to popdots, but I also love using ribbon and buttons to add texture too!
I added texture to my cards by cutting out some of the same flowers (on another piece of paper) after already creating a stamped background and lifting the cut flowers to add dimension and depth –always a winner on any card! Thanks for the chance to win! Your cards are so bright and lovely!!!
Who knew you could be a texture goddess, Kim. Great ideas for cards that”stand out”. The papers are perfect for Spring. Thanks for a chance to win.
Love your cards – so bright and cheerful. On layouts I only like to add texture that isn’t too high – otherwise the pages don’t fit nicely in the album, and the album gets too fat – so rhinestones, pearls, brads, flat buttons, and layers of paper or fussy cutting (some with low dimensional tape) are good examples. For cards, however, I will do as I please – as long as they’re not being posted! Big, fat handmade flowers (paper or ribbon), lots of dimensional tape/dots, (stacks of) buttons, as well as rhinestones, pearls, brads. Thanks for the chance to win.
I never make a card without using ribbon, buttons, or foam dots (for dimension). They are my go-to’s for that ‘missing’ element. I have just recently laid my hands on flocking so I am excited to see what I can do with it.
I love adding texture with fabric, twine, and ribbons.
Twine and buttons are at the top if my list right now for adding texture. Love that little flag banner in the card.
Such bright, fun cards, Kim! I like to add ribbon and buttons for my go-to textures…sometimes I use embossing folders or heat embossing as well.
I add texture with foam tape! I use it on about 90% of my projects
What FUN creations like usual!! I LOVE those buttons!! THANKS for sharing and for the chance to win!! Have a FABULOUS WEEK!! =)
I do a variety of things to add texture. Usually it’s with textured cardstock like a canvas pattern or adding ribbon or string. Always looking for more inspiration though!
LOVE the cards and they are now on my pinboard!! And thanks for the chance to win the lovely paper!!!
A paper crimper is something I use to add texture-as a paper cupcake liner, as plaid texture (run cs through in opposite directions). I also like to use felt. Gotta love that Echo Park paper!
I love using fabric and burlap to add texture to my cards!
