One of the fun things about working for Paper Crafts is that you get to see all the new crafting trends as they unfold. In the past several months, we’ve seen more and more paint and mist being used in projects. Cath on Moxie Fab World recently showed paint splatters as a trend she’s been watching. You’ll also see more on paint in upcoming features for Paper Crafts Magazine as well.
It was only natural then, that we use our craft time this month to play with mists and paints. And thanks to our friends at American Crafts, we had some Mister Huey mists and other American Crafts product to play with.
This was my first misting experience. Against my better judgment, I’m sharing this silly picture Holly took of me.
Nobody else seemed to have the same nerve-racking experience to misting as I did. (Of course, the prospect of misting was a bit too messy for Susan’s crafting nature! After trying it out, I might even be in the same boat.)

For all of your newbie misters out there, here are some things I learned about misting:
1) Mist sprays farther than you might think. You’ll definitely want a large paper under your misting area. A misting box works well. (See the box on the table between Melinda and Jennifer.) I also used my craft sheet, which worked well for a quick clean up.
2) Practice on a scrap piece of paper first. I’m not sure why this didn’t occur to me until after I started misting. It seemed to take a pump or two to get the flow of the mist going properly.
3) If you don’t want the big drops on your paper, aim away from the paper to get just the edges of the misting on your project. This was Jennifer’s tip, which she helpfully supplied AFTER I tried misting my project.
4) Air drying misted projects takes a while. We used a heat tool to speed up the process, which worked nicely.
5) DO NOT WEAR WHITE PANTS when misting. You can’t see it in my picture but I was wearing white pants. I think I made it through the day unscathed but it was a close one!
After all of our playing with mists, Melinda was the only one who actually used her mist panel in the card she made.

The rest of us still had fun playing even if we didn’t use our misting “tries” in our cards. I definitely need more practice misting before I’ll feel completely comfortable using it.
I’m hoping the next card design trend will be a little easier and cleaner than this last one!
I’d love to hear what trends you are seeing in card making or if you have any other tips for misting. Leave your comments and I’ll randomly pick a winner to receive some Tattered Angels Mists to play with.
All comments must be received by Monday, May 21st at 5 pm MDT. Good luck!
Happy Crafting!

I’ve had alot of trial and errors with misting. Thanks for the misting tips.
I am really new to misting! I have tried it only a couple of times with different results. I use a box from around the house to contain the mist rather than spend the money to buy the “special” misting boxes. Thats the only tip that i have! Save yourself some money and put an old box to a new use!! Would love to win this as i dont have any tattered angels mists! Thank you for the tips and ideas and for the chance to win!!
I have a few bottles of mist, I don’t use them all the time but only because the people I give scrapbook pages and/or cards to don’t like the look
I actually mist in a big Rubbermaid storage bin so it contains the spray and doesn’t get anything else dirty. Also, another tip is to not shake the bottles up and down, twirl them around btwn your hands so the nozzle doesn’t get clogged up with the shavings of color or whatever is in there.. (glitter sometimes). And lastly, I sometimes just spray a puddle onto my craft sheet and use it as paint to paint chipboard or stamped images on canvas and what not.
If you need to mix the bits in your mist bottle, try rolling the bottle in your hand instead of shaking it. Else the air bubbles that form will affect the spray that comes out and you could end up with blotches.
Thanks for the tips on misting. I like the big drops better then the mist. Another way to get the big drops is to put your finger a tiny bit on the sprayer…it is messier that way though.
i love to use mists especially with some of the beautiful masks that are available right now! thanks for the helpful tips!
Loved your list of tips. The humor will keep them in my brain whenever I mist something. I will check which pants I am wearing!
I have just started misting. I love the tip about not getting large drops.
Misting is good, messy fun!
I have played around with misting some, and love it! Can’t wait to play some more, thanks for chance to win!
I’ve never used mist, but would love to try it!
when misting, try holding the card up and misting from below to avoid big drop.
I too have a couple of mists but I’m not comfortable using them either. I will have to try a couple of the tips suggested to see if I can get results that I’m happy with. I love the colors but can’t seem to get them ‘just right’.
Looks like fun! I haven’t had much luck with misting. Now twine – I can do!
I have never tried misting, but have always wanted to try it. I will need to pick some up and use your tips. Thanks for all the great tips.
I have only begun to play with mists, but really enjoy them. Thanks for sharing your tips and the chance to win.
I love misting! I have an old shipping cardboard box that is dedicated to misting. I really used my marshmallow mist a lot on my Christmas cards last year. It’s great for snow! I also tend to use gold which gives a nice shimmer to backgrounds on cards. Thanks for a chance to win a great mist prize.
I’ve never used mists but I would love to try! Thanks for the beginner tips.
I am seeing a lot of ribbon and twine these days!
Misting grows on you if you are willing to practice. Tips from other people help, too, so thanks. My best tip? Put the cat outside before you start. (Yes, I learned this the hard way!) Also, don’t throw away the pieces you don’t like or that didn’t turn out the way you were expecting. Save them for punching/die cutting out bits and pieces. I’ve gotten some fantastic butterflies and flowers that way.
Thanks for the great misting tips, I thought the white pants tip was funny! I have a small collection of misting and am still trying to perfect my technique. I do have to say that I love misting trim. I can custom color my trim and I think its a nice effect not having the trim a solid color.
the misting has been a big trend.. and washi tape sure is big right now! Clean and simple is easy with a nice bold washi pattern
Tips on misting?? I wish!! I need a lot more practice and oh, btw, more mists to practice with!! I liked the tip on “Not wearing white pants”..take that further and say “just don’t wear white anywhere on your body”! It really must be fun to play with stuff everyday!!!
Hmm… I’ll remember the white pants tip! Sounds like something I’d mess up on! Love the cards!
I’m fairly new to paper crafting so I haven’t tried misting yet and I REALLY appreciate your tips! Now I can’t wait to try it!
Loved this post, and wonderful cards! I have tried misting as well and did not get such great results my first try with a couple of different stencils and papers. I guess I need to try again.
I do love it when I see cards speckled with color from mists, how do they do that? Other than masks and stencils, washi tape seems to be big, die cuts, and making your own embellishments. Since I am new to card-making it was neat to see the post on the different magazines over the past ten years and how things have changed, such as embellishments. Anyway, Thank you for sharing!

Thanks For the tips as I’m new to it myself. Going actually open the one bootle I have and remember to no west white pants! Thanks for this opportunity!!
I’m still learning the misting thing myself…. more error than trial…. but heaps of fun all the same!
Thanks for the chance to win!
I’ve never used mists but I would love to try them one day! Thanks for the beginner tips.
Looks like you all had a lot of fun…would love some mist. Thanks.
I love to mist but it is messy and can go further than you think. I use the lid from a cardboard box (like those that copy paper comes in). You can use very small straight pins to hold your paper in place as it sometimes tends to curl when it’s misted.
I love using mists! I use an old ceiling tile to catch all the overspray since our scrapbook room is in the basement of our house.
I really like misting & even using the stencil to apply Gesso & then spraying really adds a nice look to your project. Thanks for the chance to win some awesome sprays.
I love misting, but need to get better at it. Thanks for the tips!
I haven’t tried misting yet but have wanted to give it a try! Thanks for all of the tips they are super helpful!
I’m a bit of a newb with misting but am trying! I still can’t get the hang of a consistent spray so it is trial and error pretty much every time, lol!!
I love the stencils and masks for misting. I think trends come and go but you should be true to your own style (once you figure out what it is) lol
I like the current trend of all the laying that is being put on cards. I like all the dimension and textures!!
I love the glitter misting. I’ve noticed a lot of nerdy chic as pretty trendy
Can’t really offer any tips for misting as I’ve never tried it. Maybe do it outside on a windless day?
Flowers still seem to be on-trend right now, and it looks as if background stamps are making a comeback.
I haven’t tried any of the mists yet, but I would definitely like to win this and learn how to use them!
i’ve tried misting a few times with mixed results. sometimes it just seems like too much goes on, or is just to splotchy. guess i just have to keep trying to get it right.
I recently tried misting. Love the look, but boy, do I ever need more practice. I have a couple colors of glimmer mist, but I’d love to win more to experiment with!
I like misting, but it does make a big mess if you don’t have a lot of paper underneath. I also mist in a box lid or in the box itself. My biggest problem with misting is that it makes the paper curl. Ironing/heating it on the back side and placing under heavy books helps flatten it out.
I’ve never misted, but I’d love to try. Right now, I just love to use Glossy accents on everything!
I needed some nice tissue paper for a gift and couldn’t find what I wanted–then it hit me–spray mist tissue!! It worked beautifully. One thing I found is if you keep the spray paralell to the paper (don’t point it downward) you’re much less likely to get splatters (some may happen–but not near as much as if you are pointing the spray at the paper). Also, make sure that your finger tip or the skin of the finger is not hanging near the top of the hole where the spray comes out. If it is, your finger tip will catch some and have the tendcy to splatter badly. Thanks for the chance to win!
I just recently bought some Distress reinkers to make my own mist with perfect pearls but haven’t tried it yet. I haven’t ever done misting, so I’m hoping to use your tips. Thank you so much for the tips for beginning misters, because I’m sure I’m going to need it! And I’d love to win the Tattered Angels mists to have more options to choose from.
I haven’t tried misting yet either but some of my close friends have and it turned out beautifully! :> I should! I enjoyed reading your honest approach!
I have not tried misting but I have been thinking more and more about it. Thanks for the chance to win some.
Thanks for the tips on misting. I have noticed more cards with various types of dimensional flowers on them.
