Back in Black

While Goth I am not, I truly do love the color (or non-color) black. It can mean so many things: mourning, sophistication, mystery, and magic to name a few. In Feng Shui black carries the meaning of allure, strength, intrigue, independence, death, darkness, and evil.

Paired with white, black can turn the simplest design into something chic and bold. Check out these cups I found on here on Etsy the other day. The chalkboard paint on the cups is so trendy and fun. The cups reminded me of the Thank You card Amber Daigre did for Card Creations Vol. 10 on p. 147.

Black as a background makes for a dramatic backdrop. I’m seeing black walls with accent color pieces in home décor all over the place, including here at elledecor.com. (I have yet to try a black wall in my own home.)  It’s very reminiscent of Betsy Veldman’s Wish Big Card on p. 20 of the Paper Crafts May/June 2012 issue. Heat embossing on the black background gave a wonderful depth to the card and made the colors pop.

7339037284 1b98ecfaac Back in BlackBlack is just downright classy. The black bow trend in weddings has been going on for a while and really gives events a flair of glamor and sophistication. I found this photo on The Hive. Angeline Yong Jeet Leen’s Elegant Anniversary card in Card Creations Vol. 10 on p. 19 similarly uses a black on black pattern to give depth and interest to her card.

7339037312 0ced78d958 Back in BlackMake a statement with a bold black pattern. I loved this black tree print found here on Etsy. Black allows for the lines and pattern to become the interest.  Ashley Harris’ Life is Good Card on p. 18 of Card Creations Vol. 10 uses black to stand out nicely against a colorful background to create a beautiful silhouetted scene.

7339037328 dca3d8e24d Back in BlackBlack is consistent, grounding, and always fresh, no matter the season.  It’s also one of those colors that pairs with every color in the spectrum and never goes out of style. (That’s what I keep telling myself anyway as I continue to wear my black clothes into the summer months!)

  3. RedGem says:

I love black and white cards… but to add it to my home decor I would only add small amounts of it. As to painting a wall BLACK… sorry no!

  4. Peggy B says:

I just don’t think I’d ever paint my walls black. But I sure do like adding black here and there to my cards! Thanks for inspiring me to use it more.

  5. littlen says:

could never paint a wall black, but love using black as an accent on cards.

  6. Sandy Yavor says:

I enjoyed looking at the examples of black (and white). Thanks for a chance to win! If I had just the right artwork, I would consider painting a wall black I think….

  7. Kathy Mc says:

I love the idea that crafters can get black and white patterned paper because it goes with all colors. Personally, I wouldn’t paint a wall black but I have seen some, and it’s very elegant. A friend actually painted her bathroom black and lime green ~ just stunning, but not sure it’s something I’d want to live with for long. Thanks for the chance to win these black & white goodies!

  8. Anything that has black on it always seems a little more elegant and stylish. I love using touches of black in my crafting, home decor and clothing but I get overwhelmed if I use too much. Interesting how it appeals to some and not others.
    Thanks for sharing! :)

  9. Krysta D says:

The best thing about black is it goes with everything. Everything!

  10. Amy Miller says:

LOVE Black. Wear it all the time too. :) Have it in my craft room and it just makes things POP. Love the swing card by the way. We live in the country and get quite a few of those types of sceneries LIVE. Thanks for the opportunity.

  11. Sheri E. says:

I love black because of the way color pops off it. No, I would not paint a wall black. I live in OR, we need all the light and color we can get with all the rain.

  12. Julie Haedtke says:

If I had the right room, I would paint one wall black as an accent wall. Maybe like a gameroom or a large rec room, but unfortunately, my house is not that large and my husband would probably have a heart attack, he likes all shades of cream for walls! LOL!!!

  13. Lisa Soares says:

I absolutely love black for its elegance…especially black and white…I always have and I guess I always will because my love for it hasn’t diminished. And, YES, I would paint my walls black. I actually bought black paint to do part of my scrapbook room, but then we found out shortly after that we were moving out of state, so I thought I better not do it because not everyone would like it when we were trying to sell. But in a previous home, I did wallpaper a powder room in black tone-on-tone stripe and always got lots of good comments on it.

  14. Melinda Wilson says:

I have several pairs of black pants because they always say they make you look slimmer LOL and I need all the help I can get!

  15. kathy/NorthCarolina says:

I love the versatility of black…it can go from elegant to fun depending on the way you combine it or the embellishments you add. It’s also great for matting any color…makes things pop!

  16. Robin Gibson says:

I would ABSOLUTELY paint a wall black in my house! In fact, maybe I’ll paint one of my scraproom walls black (chalkboard paint), then I could draw all over it! LOVE this idea! Super inspired now, THANKS!

  17. Isha says:

Black is Beautiful…love the full post. TFS

  18. Cindy Groh says:

I like using black in my cards. It gives the card a new dimension.

  19. Susan DR says:

Black is so elegant and sophisticated and I love using it on my scrapbook pages and cards. But, I don’t think I would ever paint a wall black. Loved all your photos. Thanks!

  20. Christine P. says:

Black is beautiful, elegant & classy! 2/3 of my own wardobe is black or a version of it! I love black!!

  21. Helen says:

I like to mount photos on white and then black if I want to highlight them on a scrapbook LO. I like the way it gives them importance. And, no, I don’t think I’d paint a wall in my house black! ;-)

  22. I love that black makes anything look chic and trendy. It grounds things!!

  23. Cheryl R says:

I am all about color – the more, the brighter, the better. So, I could never paint a wall in my house black. BUT I love black as an accent in decorating, and in cards I often use black to really highlight the other colors.

  24. Gloria says:

Love the elegant card in black. But I don’t think I’ll paint black on my wall. I will apply that to an elegant card instead

  25. I LOVE black and wear a little something in black most every day. It is a neutral that goes with everything and dresses the simplest things up. Thanks for the chance to win!

  26. Helen LeBrett says:

I love how black makes other colors pop!!

  27. Barbara M says:

Love the black and white my most favorite combination!

  28. Cam Wood says:

I love the impact black has on a card. Its also a very versatile colour.

  29. Chris E says:

I LOVE black for almost everything … although the accent wall is a fabulous idea, and is very dramatic in the photo – my significant other thinks the only color (or non-color) worthy of being on a wall is WHITE. So, I’ll never have a black accent wall :( Although, I use black for almost everything in my world: my tri suit (workout outfit for training and participating in a triathlon), purse accessory, mats for almost all my scrapbook photos, backgrounds for some cards, computer, jacket, one of my favorite pair of shoes, etc. I just love it – it goes with EVERYTHING. I use black all the time – I love the timeless-ness of it, the simplicity, the drama, and that it makes all other colors pop! LOVE IT so much :)

  30. Amy Kolling says:

Black is just shows such elegance on a card. These samples are gorgeous!

  31. Anne-Mette says:

What a great selection of goodies! I would love to play with black and white for a while. I cross my fingers and hope that I will win:-)

  32. I LOVE how black makes other colors pop! Don’t think I could ever paint a whole room black but I am intrigued by the idea of just doing one accent wall…..

  33. Laura Norris says:

No, never painted my walls black, but like you I wear black all year round! I love the simplicity and the sophistication of black! THanks for the chance to win.

  34. Lynn (toomanycrayons) says:

Love black paired with pastels – black and pink a fave; also black and acid green this spring caught my eye.

  35. Kathy M. says:

I love black. Mostly for clothes although I have made a few black and white wedding cards in the last few weeks. We do have a room painted black. The bathroom! It is awesome!

  36. heather says:

Black is a neutral that I often forget about. Maybe because it is hard to stamp on.

  37. LinhC says:

Black is a great background to set off vibrant colors.

  38. Sheena B says:

Absolutely love crafting with black. While I have never painted my walls black, my parents did paint the walls of my kid sister’s bedroom black – at her request. Dare I say that was at LEAST 25 years ago? It WAS quite stunning.

  39. Caanan says:

Black goes with anything, and if used right, makes those other colors shine.

  40. KnitterPam says:

Pretty please PIN Betsy V’s Wish Big embossing-on-black card on Pinterest. I’m dying to pin it and can’t do it from here. Thanks!

I know the contest is done, but I’ll comment anyway. I do like your cards with black, especially the first one with the pink/black. In answer to your last question, I would have to have a bigger house with bigger rooms before I would paint a wall black. I think my house is too small to carry that off!
