Hello, friends! Today is a special day! It is fellow Go-to Gal Kim Kesti’s birthday!

Kim is an amazingly talented woman.

We lovingly refer to her as our “Go-to Gal Mom”…she keeps us on our toes and keeps us in line! And she’s good at it.

I’m guessing it has something to do with the fact that she has eight children. Yes, EIGHT! I know! I don’t know how she does it either! And if you ask her, she’ll humbly say…“Yeah, but they’re spread out.” or “Yeah, but this or that…” But I still say she’s one amazing woman!

Not only is she a talented paper crafter, she also loves to sew, decorate her home and make all kinds of cool stuff! Her blog inspires me every time I visit! You never know what she’s going to be up to next…like the fun quilts she creates, the adorable t-shirts (that I probably would have spent $30 a piece for at The Loft…and she made for like 6 bucks!) and her colorful home décor projects. See, I told you she was amazingly talented!

When it comes to paper crafting, you can always count on Kim to make the coolest stuff out of the most basic supplies. She often makes cards using nothing more than cardstock and her endless imagination! So today, I channeled my inner Kim K and made a card in her fun and cute style. My card is all cardstock and no patterned paper…and you know it was hard for me to back away from the patterned paper!

I made some fun cardstock flowers because it seemed like something Kim would do…she has lots of projects on her blog using handmade flowers. I topped each one off with a funky embellishment…because, well….Kim is a funky kind of girl! And, of course, there are the bright colors. You KNOW she loves bright colors!

So won’t you help me in wishing Kim a very happy birthday? Leave a comment with some birthday love…or try your hand at creating a Kim-inspired card of your own! Be sure to link us up here if you do!

Celebrating Kim,
Betsy

P.S. The other Go-to Gals are helping me celebrate Kim, too! Be sure to visit Jessica, Kim H, Teri and Maren’s blogs to see their Kim-inspired cards!

Welcome to Freebie Friday! Lately I’m really diggin’ the patchwork look. Not only does it remind me of the cozy quilts my grandma use to make, but there’s literally countless ways to create this simple design:

  • Patterned paper scraps
  • Die-cutted/Embossed squares
  • Stamped squares
  • Fabric squares
  • Ribbon squares

And unlike a real quilt that can take hours, if not days, a paper ”quilt” can be made in just a few minutes. All you need in some fun product and a little imagination. Then you just “stitch” it all together!

Take Kim Kesti’s Thank You Squares Card above. As a paper crafter turned quilter, she showed off her love for both hobbies in this blog HERE.

Designer Genevieve Cassady’s Patchwork Thank You Card appears in our current September/October issue. She created her pretty patchwork by die-cutting cardstock squares and then stamping various patterns on them. With all the gorgeous colors and patterns, doesn’t it almost look like a real quilt?!

Wanna make your own paper “quilt”? Hero Arts’ Jennifer McGuire was nice enough to send over some chalk inks for two lucky paper crafters. Leave a comment telling me what product you would use to create the patchwork look. All comments must be received by midnight (MDT) on Sunday, Sept. 5.

Two lucky winners will each take home this fun set of chalk inks from Hero Arts!

Happy Friday!
Kelly

P.S. Looks like Go-to Gal Kim Hughes is also diggin’ the patchwork look! Hop over to her blog to see her fun “quilted” project!

Welcome to day two of my blog series on incorporating text into your projects! If you missed yesterday’s post, click HERE.

When I think of books, I think of school, writing and text. So, you probably already know how perfectly this trend coordinates with anything school-related. Don’t even get me started with ledger and lined papers…pure hyperventilation!

There’s never a lack of gift-giving occasions for teachers, so I thought up a super simple gift that can be given to any teacher, at any time of the year.

Who can’t use some fun and flirty pencils? Simply fold up the bottom of a 12-inch paper, staple the sides and voila…instant pocket! Instead of filling the pocket with school supplies, how about adding a gift card instead? Fold down the top of the paper and tuck it into the bottom pocket. Other ideas:

  • A journal card makes a perfect label (just add the teacher’s name to it with letter stickers).
  • I combined some ledger stickers to create an A+ sign as the gift topper (I cut up two l’s to make the plus sign).

What about a thank you card for that special teacher? Fun tips:

  • I used a text stamp to add a pattern to the white accent flower with red ink.
  • Finish off with some school-ish items such as a paper clip and staples.

Lovin’ the look of text? For more inspiration, check out:

Wishing you had some brand new text product to play with? Leave me a comment and one lucky person will win this text-themed prize package. All comments must be received by midnight (MDT) on Thursday, Sept. 2.

One lucky winner will take home this text-themed prize package!

I had so much fun with last September’s Back to School blog series, that I decided to head back to the classroom! This year’s two-day series is all about incorporating text into your paper crafting projects. Whether you’re a fan of newsprint, ledger paper or journaling cards, it’s never been easier (or more fun!) to use this trendy product.

When I decided to create a school-themed notebook, I looked around my craft room to find as many school-ish products that I could. It wasn’t half as hard as I thought. Huh…it turns out that I am a huge text-type fan! Fun text, book print and school patterns are everywhere I look (which makes me one happy girl).

I made this School Memories Notebook for the Reading Between the Lines feature in the September/October issue.

I chose to cluster the school print products together for added impact. But it was missing something…a cute, three dimensional element. So, I thought I’d add a paper flower to the mix. I have seen these paper goodies taught many ways, but I think that I create mine a little differently. Mine are flatter and have a distressed look to them:

I start with a paper ring. Double-sided print paper is best (you can ink the paper edges before you begin, if you like). You can use a die cut or combine two different sized circle punches (which is what I used). The larger circle is 2 1/2″, and I’m not sure the size of my inside circle. Honestly, it doesn’t matter what size you choose…it will just change the petal size on your flower. Also, create a “test” flower before committing to your paper choice.

Cut through the ring at any point on the circle, then start rolling the paper onto itself. Bend outwards as you roll the paper flower, and make sure you have liquid glue handy to adhere the “petals” while you roll.

It’s alright if the flower looks flat. Once the glue is dry, you can “fluff ” it up.

Glue the last bit of paper to the back of your flower. Keep in mind that you can pop up your paper rose with foam dots to add dimension.

This card consists of six different text types. They work so well together because the the print color is close to the base color, and monochromatic colors always look beautiful together.

I hope that you try this technique with many paper types and have a blast! I will be back tomorrow to share some more text-type projects.

See you then!

It’s that time of year again…when paper crafters from around the world “ooh” and “ahh” over all of the glorious new goodies being released. CHA is underway, and I’m seriously jealous of those walking the floor this very day.

For the rest of us at home, glued to our screens, looking for sneak peeks and show photos, I thought it would be fun to share some product picks from the Paper Crafts Go-to Gals…

These are the goodies that these crafty girls can’t wait to get their hands on!

Teri Anderson

Our sweet, funky Teri can’t wait to play with the wood veneer shapes from Studio Calico. She says she’s especially, and I quote, “geeked” about these alphas. She says wood + text = heaven.

Jessica Witty

Jess is especially excited about the new Restoration collection from Crate Paper. It’s full of vintage inspired goodies, bright colors, florals, doilies and more. Jess…we’re shocked (no…not really)! If you know Jess, you know her obsession with doilies…and vintage things.

Kim Kesti

Now for another shocker, Kim K. is daydreaming about American Crafts’ new City Park line. Imagine that…our clean and graphic girl excited by one of the new American Crafts lines! This line is filled with sunshine and color, with adorable images of clouds, hot air balloons, flowers and more.

Kim Hughes

Kim H. is doing some serious drooling over the new Artisan Elements from Pink Paislee…and I have to agree. My goodness those are gorgeous! They can be colored with all sorts of different mediums making them classy and universal…just like our beloved Kim!

Maren Benedict

Our happy little homemaker Maren is anxious to cook up some paper crafted goodies with the new Modern Homemaker collection from October Afternoon. It looks like they’ve whipped up another great collection full of adorable prints and colors. This one is definitely at the top of my list, too!

Betsy Veldman

As for me, I’m going to have to go with Pink Paislee’s new Sweetness collection. You might be familiar with my love of vintage things and bright colors, and this collection has it all! Yellow, aqua, pink and a touch of red. Sigh. It doesn’t get much better than that.

I don’t know about you, but I loved seeing the things that are at the top of my fellow Go-to Gals’ crafty wish lists. Each one seems to have found something to fit their paper crafting personalities…and that’s the beauty of it all. There’s something for everyone…and chances are you’re a little like me…and there are a lot of somethings you’ll want to add to your wish list!

Oohing and aahing along with you,

Betsy Veldman,
Paper Crafts Go-to Gal

P.S. It’s the last Wednesday of the month and that means it’s time for another Go-to Gal Designer Challenge! This week the girls are playing with goodies from American Crafts. Hop around to Betsy, Jess, Kim H., Kim K., Maren and Teri’s blogs to see what they’ve whipped up!
