For the Love of CHA – Part 1

Susan headshoot For the Love of CHA Part 1

Susan R. Opel

Two weeks ago your Paper Crafts editorial team was drinking in all of the newest of new stuff at CHA (the Craft & Hobby Association trade show) in Anaheim, CA. Our purpose has many layers—see what’s out there in preparation for upcoming issues (including tools and trends), meet with manufacturers to determine how we can join forces (via ad space, social media, etc.), and promote our upcoming special issues so that retailers will sell them in their stores! An added bonus is getting to meet designers we’ve only dealt with via email and Facebook. Getting IRL hugs is the best!

It’s awesome and exhausting and overwhelming and amazing! And this time didn’t disappoint.

We had a few bumps along the way. My hot rollers died on the first day, our dear senior editor P. Kelly Smith was not feeling well the whole time, and for the first time in six and a half years, our moxie fab Trends Editor Cath Edvalson couldn’t make the trip due to a rotator cuff injury.

With Cath’s absence I was given the MONUMENTAL task of filling her shoes (which I could never, ever do!). Talk about pressure! So as I made my way from booth to booth I tried to use my Moxie Fab radar.

But I realized something along the way: everyone who walks that floor takes something different away. Last week four of the Go-to Gals in attendance guested at the Moxie Fab World blog with their squeals, and as each day unfolded I noticed that the things that these ladies showcased fit them to a T.

So today, I bring you some of the things I noticednot with my Moxie Fab radar, but with my I Puffy {Heart} This radar.

Motifs:

It seems that Asian-inspired prints and icons were popping up here and there.

Getting to Know Miss Melinda (Soon to be Mrs….)

6848868451 00997536d7 m Getting to Know Miss Melinda (Soon to be Mrs....)

Melinda Ward

Hello, again!

I am so excited to be back in the Paper Crafts office! As Jennifer said, a lot has changed since I was here two years ago.

For those that weren’t readers my first time here: I’m a California transplant who came out to Utah to finish school. The Art Director here at Paper Crafts, Matt, was one of my instructors.

After I left Paper Crafts the first time, I buckled down and finished school, and I met my amazing fiancé. I also took a whirlwind trip across Route 66 with my mom and little brother in April 2011 for graduation—amazing, by the way. Oh, and also be sure to watch The Price is Right on March 2nd; I can tell you some amazing stuff happens. It’s been an exciting couple of years.

Now I am working toward some excitement of another kind! In exactly 29 days, I will walk down the aisle to marry my fiancé, and then celebrate into the night with family and friends.

Instead of answering some of the normal “Getting to Know You” questions, we thought it might be more fun for me to share a paper crafting project that I’ve been working on for my wedding in March—my centerpieces!

First, I discovered the miracle that is Pinterest, and I pinned all kinds of images like this:

Oh, and let’s not forget this find:

Image via Helen Carter Weddings

Yep, I’ve been bit by the chandelier-in-a-tree bug. They are just so beautiful.

So, to recap: lanterns, lights, terrariums, and chandeliers. Pretty! But how do I make them all work together? (And how in the world am I going to afford several chandeliers?)

Being a designer and a little crafty, I figured that I could make something that had everything I loved.

After a little searching on the internet, I found a few websites that described making paper chandeliers. Quite a bit cheaper than a real one!

After taking advantage of a fantastic deal at a local craft store for some cardstock, I found a picture of a paper chandelier with a particularly nice shape and traced it in Illustrator. Then, using my friend’s Cricut, I had the shape cut out in groups of five.

A few minutes and some glue dots later. . .

Many more minutes and glue dots later. . .

6847932055 7daa2fedc3 Getting to Know Miss Melinda (Soon to be Mrs....)

Using a $7 lantern from IKEA, some moss, and a couple of faux flowers, I created my own mini terrarium. Then, I hot-glued a piece of floral wire to the top of the lantern to create a hanging bar, which I used to hang the chandelier.

Want to see it finished?

Perfect! It makes me so happy!

And now for a little treat: in honor of my upcoming nuptials, I’m offering this selection of wedding-inspired product!

6848669845 5da7b34d2f Getting to Know Miss Melinda (Soon to be Mrs....)Leave a comment describing your favorite thing about weddings, and one lucky winner will receive this spectacular prize, which includes paper, stickers, a ready-to-decorate chipboard frame, embellishments, and clear stamps! Think of all you could do! All comments must be received by Monday, February 13 at 5:00 pm MST. Good luck, and have a wonderful weekend!

Tales and Trends from the CHA Show Floor

5411343172 322d96c1c3 Tales and Trends from the CHA Show Floor

Jennifer Schaerer

Blogs, Facebook and Twitter are bursting with squeals and shopping lists after all the new product was revealed last week at CHA, and I’ve been reading every post I can find. It’s always interesting to see what rises to the top of the popularity heap – and why.

Our own Susan R. Opel will be covering the entire floor for you right here in two photo-laden posts next week, and Kerri Miller will be sharing her observations as well. For now, in case you’ve missed it, our Go-to Gals have been sharing their finds over on the Moxie Fab World blog this week. Oh, and don’t forget our photo album on Facebook, either. We zig-zagged our way around the floor to fill it with photos of what you told us you wanted to see most.

Speaking of zig-zag, it was the first thing that struck me as a still-dominant pattern as I worked the floor. And it’s expanding into herringbone and Missoni-inspired treatments as well. We saw it in almost every booth – both on product and in project designs.

Giving zig-zag a run for its money, I saw a growing focus on the hexagonal shape family – from honeycomb patterns to chicken wire. As a design element that works for vintage, modern and everything in between, it was definitely one of the favorite new patterns at this show.

I was positively giddy to see that natural fibers and materials were woven into almost every collection – I’m a big fan. Linen, burlap, canvas, hemp, cotton fabric & twine, wood, leather, denim, and cork popped up as accents as well as entire collections. Patterns based on natural materials were used frequently in paper collections, too – from chipped paint and distressed wood to cork and denim.

Leading the way on the natural side and proving that it’s here to stay, kraft’s popularity is not waning either. Manufacturers are showing its versatility in all style categories from fun and cute to shabby chic and elegant. It’s found everywhere – patterned paper, embellishments, chipboard, tags, stickers and more.

A prevailing color palette isn’t always easy to spot because the CHA Show floor is a spectrum feast for the eyes, but there were a number of color stories featuring blues and yellows accented with gray. Windy Robinson noted the frequent appearance of navy blue in her Moxie Fab World post, and the blue/yellow combos I saw ranged from turquoise and lemon to steel and citron.

Washi tape seems to be a must for every new collection. Decorative tape in general has been up and coming for the past few shows (fabric tape, lace tape, patterned packaging tape) and it’s safe to say this falls into the paper crafting essentials category now.

Personal die-cut machines continue to evolve, and partnerships abound with stamps being paired with matching dies or electronic cutting patterns. Spellbinders continues to partner with a number of companies (including Unity Stamp Co.), and Sizzix is working with Hero Arts on a combined collection of Framelits. Sizzix also debuted its new Stamp 2 Cut series with Tim Holtz – a set of electronic die-cutting patterns for the eClips machine featuring matching stamps.

And finally, a thought about what I saw in small glimpses that might blossom into a new design element at CHA Summer: subway art. I’m going out on a limb, powered by hope because I love anything typographical, and saying it will get traction in the next few months and we’ll be seeing more really soon.

If you look closely, you'll see hints of subway art in the shapes on this Life Documented page by Simple Stories

Stay tuned next week, because Susan has literally HUNDREDS of photos gathered to share with you. There’s so much more to come in showcasing the fun new products we look forward to seeing in your upcoming creations!
