Handmade Cards for Moms, Dads and Grads

Jennifer1 Handmade Cards for Moms, Dads and Grads

Jennifer Schaerer

This is the time of year when occasions to create handmade cards not only sneak up on us, but come in waves. The graduates have already started down the aisles to collect hard-earned diplomas — at the college level, anyway — and soon to follow are the high schoolers, middle schoolers, elementary schoolers, and even kindergartners and pre-K achievers.

Among all the school colors and diplomas, we also get to celebrate all the moms (Mother’s Day is a little over two weeks away, people!) and dads (Father’s Day is June  16) in very short order.

Take a fun and quick approach to this springtime wave of papercrafting opportunity and check out the free downloadable sentiments from our May/June issue. Dive into your stash and you’ll have cards for moms, dads and grads in no time flat.

Downloadable sentiments make it easy to create cards in multiples, and I’ve got my eye on this sentiment for a few graduation cards:

Use this sentiment with cardstock in the colors of your graduate for a personalized and creative card

And don’t miss what senior editor P. Kelly Smith did with the doodle-art computer sentiment:

L2 Handmade Cards for Moms, Dads and Grads

Use this downloadable doodle-art sentiment for a fun and creative graduation gift card holder

You can find dozens of downloadable sentiments on the downloads page of our website, so start planning ahead for fun ways to celebrate any occasion that’s coming your way.

Groovin’ with the Go-to Gals: Scrapbook Kit Meets Card Maker

Kim headshot 187x300 Groovin’ with the Go to Gals: Scrapbook Kit Meets Card Maker

Kim Kesti

Hello, friends! I have been dying to share an experiment I recently tried, so today is the day. I know that many of our readers cross over into the world of scrapbooking and a lot of us have tried the super popular “pocket scrapbooks”. Companies like Project Life, Snap! Studio by Simple Stories and Photo Freedom by Echo Park all make gorgeous products engineered to take the guesswork out of scrapping.

I am lucky enough to have several of the Photo Freedom kits; after doing some scrapbooking I realized that tons of the papers would be perfect for my card making. Woot! Not only does everything coordinate, it’s all sized perfectly for pockets (which means it’s also perfect for cards). How fun!

Here are three cards I made in less than an hour:

Have you ever used your leftover scrap supplies for cards? Leave me a comment about your “crossover products” and I will enter you to win these fabulous kits from Echo Park!

Paper Crafts on YouTube

Susan Paper Crafts on YouTube

Susan R. Opel

Did you know that Paper Crafts magazine has its very own YouTube channel? For over a year, we’ve been diligently working on coming up with video content that will teach and inspire the paper-crafting masses. We’re pretty proud of what we’ve done, and we’d love for you to visit, subscribe, and learn!

So far, we’ve made four trips to our office space in Golden, CO, which is set up with a state-of-the-art studio and a talented team of cameramen and women who make us look good. Four teachers (yours truly, Paper Crafts Go-to Gal Kimberly Crawford, Paper Crafts Senior Editor P. Kelly Smith, and Digital Managing Editor Stacy Croninger) have spent countless hours of screen time sharing tips and ideas that you’re sure to love.

clockwise from top left: Susan R. Opel, our inspiring set, P. Kelly Smith ready for action, stamping gurus Stacy Croninger and Kimberly Crawford

In March of 2012, our inaugural video series was filmed, and we called it All About Adhesives. You’ll find tons of inspiring ways to use adhesives—not only what’s the right adhesive to use in most situations, but how to make adhesives part of your design. Check out these 18 videos to maximize your adhesive power! Here’s one of my favorites in the series: Adhering the Center of a Pleated Rosette.

All About Embellishments was filmed in June of 2012. P. Kelly Smith and I filmed 30 segments this time with all sorts of ideas of how to use the goodies you’ve got in your craft room. From buttons and brads to ribbon, twine, eyelets, and chipboard, we show you a myriad of ways to have fun with your embellishments. Here’s an awesome one from P. Kelly where she teaches how to stamp on wooden buttons. What a great idea!

Come November of 2012, we were ready to tackle a big one—All About Die-Cutting. This time, Stacy Croninger and I filmed 30 segments featuring several manual machines and a bunch of different ways to use those machines to their potential. I love this one Stacy filmed about die-cutting felt. There are even some informative segments about die storage and tips and tricks for certain machines!

Last month, I accompanied Stacy and brand new Go-to Gal (and stamping extraordinaire) Kimberly Crawford to Colorado. This time I served as the stage manager, because stamping videos need to be left to the experts! These two rock star teachers filmed FIFTY segments. I was in awe of the range of things that can be done, and you will be, too. Check out the project below. After watching these two in action, this non-stamper gave one of their techniques a try. I used the back of a clear stamp to stamp the brown in, and then I flipped the stamp over and stamped the black frame. Go ME! I also figured out that the Stamp-A-Ma-Jig is something that I need to invest in.

Just a Note Card by Susan R. Opel

pin it button Paper Crafts on YouTubeBut here’s the deal! The stamping videos are COMING SOON, and you really won’t want to miss them. So head on over to our YouTube channel and subscribe so that you get in on the awesomeness.

In order to prepare you for all of the learning you’ll be doing once these videos hit the worldwide web, I’ve gathered some inspiring projects used in our filming, as well as some stamping products from Hero Arts, Ranger Ink, Close To My Heart, Maya Road, Waltzingmouse Stamps, Technique Tuesday, and Clearsnap. I’ll give this awesome little treasure of inky happiness to one winner. Simply leave a comment telling us what sorts of videos you’re interested in seeing.

Sharing the Digital Love

Stacy Sharing the Digital Love

Stacy Croninger

Hi everyone,

Have you delved into the Paper Crafts May/June digital issue? If not, you really should! If you’re a print subscriber, it is FREE. Or you can subscribe to just the digital issue. Or you can purchase one issue of the digital version of the magazine issue. Look at all the options you have—like a kid in a candy store.

The digital issue is new to some of our team as well, so I asked them what they loved most about the digital issue. Here are their responses:

Ahtanya: I love that I can search for a specific designer to see their projects.

8662520547 3764455dc4 Sharing the Digital Love

Kelly: One of the reasons I love the digital issue is I can click on the Online Bonus Projects icon and it takes me right to the Paper Crafts web site where complete supplies and instructions can be found.

Melinda shared this: I love that all the projects on the cover and in the Table of Contents are links, so if I see one I really like, I can go directly to where that card is in the magazine.

Holly: I love that there are many links included in the issue so you can go straight to the web page that is mentioned within the issue.

Jennifer: I love that I can have an entire year of issues (and then some) available via the free app on my iPad.

Kerri: I love that I can easily download the magazine to my iPad at any time during the day. It’s with me whenever I have a free moment during the day to check out the fun inspiration.

Susan: I love that you can pin projects to Pinterest or tweet or Facebook them!

8662519891 eb23a8d10f Sharing the Digital Love

And me, well I love that I have so many options for enjoying the magazine—if I’m creating at home, I use my iPad to access the digital version for instant inspiration. When I need to feel paper I grab my printed issue (but really, I don’t do that very often although they do look pretty in the magazine holder on my shelf). And at work I flip through the pages electronically on my computer. I’m all about options and the digital issue gives me that—lots and lots of projects and ways to enjoy viewing them.

My challenge to you? Put down your print issue and give the digital issue a try. With all the beautiful cards and projects and the multiple ways to view the issue, I think you’re going to fall in love too.

Have fun reading!
